Listen to this chapter:

โ€œIs it over? Whereโ€™s Landon? When can I see him?โ€ Amelia blurted out, her hand pressed tightly to her chest, voice trembling with excitement.

Sheโ€™d barely gotten the news that the Kington Gang had been wiped out before she dashed straight to the police station, not even stopping to catch her breath. She saw Aiden being led away in handcuffs with her own eyes, but there was still no sign of Landon anywhere. She was happy but still anxious.

Daniel finished exchanging information with the police and turned to her with a wide grin. โ€œItโ€™s over. Landon will be back soon.โ€

โ€œOh, this is wonderful, this is wonderfulโ€ฆโ€ Ameliaโ€™s eyes filled with tears of relief.

Amelia was so overwhelmed with joy that she started crying. โ€˜Even if he doesnโ€™t remember me, it doesnโ€™t matter,โ€™ she thought, her voice trembling as she said, โ€œAs long as he comes back safe and soundโ€ฆโ€

Daniel wanted to tell her that Landon had already regained his memory, but he held back.

Daniel held back, thinking, โ€˜Itโ€™s better if Landon tells her himself. These days apart had been pure torment for both of them.โ€™

โ€œDonโ€™t worry, heโ€™s already on his way back,โ€ Daniel said with a reassuring smile. โ€œI heard he was fighting all night yesterday. Maybe you should get ready to see him.โ€

โ€œWhat? He was in the thick of it? Did he get hurt?โ€ Ameliaโ€™s nerves instantly shot up, her heart pounding with anxiety.

โ€˜With bullets flying everywhere, itโ€™s almost impossible not to get caught in the crossfire,โ€™ she thought, fear twisting in her chest.

โ€˜Heโ€™s still got amnesiaโ€“his head really canโ€™t take another hit,โ€™ she thought, anxiety twisting in her gut.

โ€œHe was really brave. Just some scratches and bruises,โ€ Daniel reassured her.

โ€œWhew!โ€ Amelia finally let out a breath sheโ€™d been holding.

But then, the thought of the chip in Landonโ€™s head made her heart clench all over again.

To make sure Landon got the best and most timely care, Amelia had Wesley make sure everything was ready at the hospital. She herself brought a bouquet of bright red roses and went straight to the airport to wait for him. Daniel and Edith stayed by her side, genuinely happy for her. Amelia waited at the airport for more than five hours, her heart pounding with every passing minute, until finallyโ€“Landon appeared.

As soon as she spotted his figure in the distance, Amelia didnโ€™t care about anything else. She bolted straight toward him and dove into his arms. โ€œHoney, youโ€™re finally backโ€ฆโ€

โ€œIโ€™m sorry,โ€ Landon said softly.

He took the bouquet of roses from her with one hand, and with the other, carefully pulled her into a gentle embrace. On the flight home, heโ€™d replayed everything from the past over and over in his mind. He had a thousand things he wanted to say to her, but when they finally met, all that came out was an awkward, choked, โ€œIโ€™m sorry.โ€

The emotions between them were so intense, words just couldnโ€™t do them justice.

โ€œHoney, honey!โ€ Amelia called out again and again, her voice breaking as she sobbed uncontrollably.

Landon held her close, gently pressing a kiss to the top of her head. โ€œIโ€™m back, and Iโ€™m never leaving againโ€ฆโ€

โ€œOkay! Letโ€™s go to the hospital,โ€ Amelia said, finally pulling away to look him over from head to toe.

He was dressed neatly, with no visible injuries and not a trace of the battle left on him.

โ€œI even took a shower and changed on the plane just so I could look my best for you,โ€ Kayla appeared, smiling as she spoke.

Now that sheโ€™d shed the prim and proper look of the Kyle heiress, she seemed so much more at ease, her true self shining through. But she still wore a delicate lace mask over her face.

โ€œKayla,โ€ Amelia said, giving her a warm hug. โ€œWelcome home, Kayla!โ€

Kayla instinctively touched her face, her voice lowered. โ€œDonโ€™t tell my mom Iโ€™m back yet.โ€

โ€œWhy?โ€ Amelia asked, puzzled.

โ€œIโ€™m just not ready to face her yet,โ€ Kayla said softly.

She lowered her hand, her usual carefree demeanor returning. โ€œYou know, I left home when I was seven, and I still havenโ€™t gotten my memories back. I need to mentally prepare myself first.โ€

Tuff watched as she touched the side of her face, then quietly asked Brian, โ€œDid something happen to her face?โ€

โ€œSheโ€™s disfigured,โ€ Brian replied.

Tuff was startled for a second, then let out a breath. โ€œItโ€™s just looks. As long as sheโ€™s healthy, thatโ€™s what matters.โ€

Brian gave him a long, meaningful look and said, โ€œIt was a stray bullet from you that did it.โ€
