Chapter 142

Landon threw a lavish birthday party, and Amelia looked genuinely pleased.

Meanwhile, Daniel, still reeling from Maisieโ€™s earlier jab, managed a grateful smile and said, โ€œThanks.โ€

โ€œAmyโ€™s got a gift for you, too,โ€ Landon said, leaning back in his wheelchair as he sized up Daniel.

People who achieve great things always have excellent composure. The last time Daniel lost his cool was over the Amber Vase. But that night, he was even more unsettled. Perhaps Maisieโ€™s words had that much influence on him.

โ€œThank you, Amelia.โ€ Daniel looked flattered and immediately put on the tie she gave as a gift.

โ€œAs long as you like it, Daniel.โ€ Amelia covered her mouth and giggled. โ€œBut a black card for just a suit, thatโ€™s hardly a good deal for you.โ€

Daniel let out a heavy sigh. โ€œIโ€™m sorry I didnโ€™t find you sooner. You suffered under the Edwards family for so many years, and almost fell victim to Zacharyโ€™sโ€“โ€ Worried Landon might misunderstand, he left the rest unsaid.

โ€œItโ€™s all in the past. The moment I opened my eyes on the operating table, my fate changed,โ€ Amelia said, glancing at Landon as a blush appeared on her cheeks.

โ€˜In my life, Iโ€™ve ended up in a manโ€™s bed twice, and somehow, I managed to find true love,โ€™ she thought.

โ€œShe was quite clear-headed, even wanted a divorce at one point!โ€ Landon said with a laugh as he poured Daniel a drink. โ€œTo the birthday boy, cheers!โ€

Danielโ€™s face turned stern as he refused the glass. โ€œWhatโ€™s this about you two getting a divorce?โ€

โ€˜Iโ€™m not drinking until I get the full story,โ€™ he thought.

Amelia explained sheepishly, โ€œOh, that was right after I first came to the Kingsley family. I just wanted to protect myself, so we agreed to annul the marriage once he recovered.โ€

She chuckled to herself, โ€œI was so stubborn back then. Looking back, it was just like lovers having their first silly quarrel.โ€

โ€œI see. So, how about you two now?โ€ Danielโ€™s gaze shifted between them.

โ€˜If this marriage isnโ€™t making her happy, she has to leave!โ€™ he thought firmly.

โ€œYou know? Weโ€™re planning to grow old together!โ€ Landon said.

Daniel looked at Landon, then at Amelia. โ€˜But that decision is up to Amelia,โ€™ he thought.

โ€œMm-hmm,โ€ Amelia nodded shyly, her cheeks blushing. Only then did Daniel relax and accept the drink Landon offered.

โ€˜Man, my brother-in-law loves putting on airs,โ€™ Landon thought to himself.

Knowing Landonโ€™s inner thoughts, Amelia awkwardly tried to smooth things over. โ€œIโ€™m starving. Letโ€™s all dig in!โ€

โ€œSure,โ€ Daniel nodded.

During dinner, conversation flowed easily among the three of them. But midway through the meal, Danielโ€™s assistant, Micah, approached and said respectfully, โ€œMr. Zuckerberg, Dr. Mitchell has arrived.โ€

โ€œBring him in,โ€ Daniel replied. As the family head, he rose personally to greet the distinguished physician.

An elderly man with white hair entered with a chuckle. He stroked his beard. โ€œMr. Zuckerberg, who is this special person you mentioned earlier? And why do you need my help?โ€

The moment his gaze fell upon Landon, his eyes widened in shock, and his smile instantly disappeared.

โ€œDr. Mitchell, this is my sister, Amelia, and my brother-in-law, Landon Kingsley.โ€

He raised an eyebrow. Meanwhile, Amelia stood up gracefully and said, โ€œItโ€™s an honor to meet you, Dr. Mitchell.โ€

He extended his hand. โ€œPleased to meet you, Iโ€™m Morgan Mitchell, but you can call me Dr. Mitchell.โ€

Morgan studied Landon for a few seconds before finally shaking his hand. โ€œMr. Kingsley, what happened to your legs?โ€

Landon replied, โ€œI was in a car accident a few months ago and was in a coma for over three months. Iโ€™ve mostly recovered now, though I still canโ€™t walk yet.โ€

Morgan checked his pulse, then examined his legs and pressed on his knees. Seeing this, Amelia asked anxiously, โ€œDr. Mitchell, how long until he can stand up again?โ€

โ€œHard to say,โ€ Morgan replied, stroking his beard thoughtfully.

Most of Ameliaโ€™s hope vanished instantly. โ€œDr. Mitchellโ€ฆโ€

Dr. Mitchell calmed her. โ€œLandonโ€™s pulse is steady, and heโ€™s in good health. The immobility is due to incomplete nerve recovery. Itโ€™ll take time, but no treatment will work without his own will to stand.โ€

Amelia thought over Morganโ€™s words carefully, then asked tentatively, โ€œDr. Mitchell, do you mean that as long as he has the will, he can recover?โ€

โ€œThatโ€™s one way to put it,โ€ Morgan replied.

โ€œThatโ€™s wonderful! My husband wants to walk again more than anyone else, Doctor.โ€ Ameliaโ€™s face lit up with joy. โ€œHoney, you can do this!โ€

โ€œAlright.โ€ Landon smiled at her. โ€œSince weโ€™re lucky enough to meet Dr. Mitchell, could you take a look at my wife as well?โ€

โ€œWhatโ€™s wrong with Amy?โ€ Danielโ€™s heart skipped a beat.

โ€˜Is my sister sick too?โ€™ he wondered anxiously.

โ€œItโ€™s nothing serious, just a quick examination,โ€ Amelia said, biting her lip as she extended her hand, a faint glimmer of hope in her eyes.

Gloria had already taken her to countless doctors, but none could cure her. Perhaps Morgan could help.

โ€œWait, iodine poisoning?โ€ Morgan asked in surprise as he checked her pulse.

โ€œYes.โ€ Amelia lowered her eyes in worry.

Hearing this, Daniel glared furiously at Landon. โ€œHow could you let this happen to her?โ€

โ€œDaniel, it was an accident. Please donโ€™t blame him,โ€ Amelia quickly interrupted.

Daniel took a deep breath, struggling to contain his anger. โ€œDr. Mitchell, how is my sister?โ€

โ€œThe pain usually comes periodically. Usually once a month, and currently, she canโ€™t have children,โ€ Morgan explained.

โ€˜Canโ€™t have children, for now?โ€™ Ameliaโ€™s eyes lit up, as if bathed in the light of hope.

โ€œDr. Mitchell, does that mean I might still have a chance to have kids?โ€ Amelia asked.

โ€œCertainly,โ€ Dr. Mitchell assured her. โ€œThe Meyers possess a special medicine that could help you greatly. If we can obtain it, I can cure you!โ€

โ€œWhat kind of medicine?โ€ Landon and Daniel blurted out in unison, their excitement palpable.

Morgan explained, โ€œItโ€™s a legendary drug called Velmira, developed by a doctor back in 1949. Velmira is used to treat infertility in women.โ€

Daniel responded right away, โ€œNo problem. Iโ€™ll head back to Lunova to ask forโ€ฆโ€

โ€œDaniel, thereโ€™s no rush. Letโ€™s take our time,โ€ Amelia said with concern.

โ€˜Maisie is related to the Meyers from her motherโ€™s side. After offending her today, getting the medicine wonโ€™t be so easy, will it?โ€™ she thought anxiously.

โ€œExactly. Weโ€™re newlyweds! Thereโ€™s no hurry to have children,โ€ Landon said lazily, though he was already formulating other plans.

After dinner, Daniel and Amelia planned to visit their motherโ€™s grave in Pinecrest. Meanwhile, Morgan walked over to Landon and muttered, โ€œYou bastard, pretending even in front of me?โ€

โ€œTo be precise, Iโ€™m only pretending in front of my wife, Dr. Mitchell,โ€ Landon replied, then casually shook his legs, dropping all pretense.

โ€œHah!โ€ Morgan laughed in exasperation. โ€œPretending to your wife, I see? Sooner or later, sheโ€™ll learn about this!โ€

Landon smiled. โ€œDonโ€™t worry, I know what Iโ€™m doing.โ€ He and Morgan seemed to have a secret.

Morgan stroked his beard with a grunt. โ€œSince you were sick, why didnโ€™t you report it to your superiors? If you had told me earlier, you wouldnโ€™t have had to lie in bed for three months!โ€

โ€œCan a crippled guy file a report?โ€

โ€œBut you woke up later, didnโ€™t you? A call or a text? How hard could that be?โ€

โ€œDidnโ€™t want to bother him,โ€ Landon sighed.

The two mirrored each otherโ€™s stubbornness, neither willing to yield. Morgan sighed, โ€œAre you still blaming him?โ€

Landonโ€™s face hardened. โ€œIf he hadnโ€™t interfered back then, I would have found Kayla long ago. As long as my sister is still missing, I wonโ€™t ever forgive him.โ€

โ€œKayla, huh? Letโ€™s not talk about that. Handle it as you see fit,โ€ Morgan sighed again.

โ€œMorgan, if you can cure my wife, Iโ€™ll make peace with you,โ€ Landon said with a grin.

Morganโ€™s beard bristled as he glared. โ€œYou dare bargain with me, Landon?โ€

โ€œYou can always refuse, you know?โ€ Landon shrugged.

โ€œAlright, fine, I accept,โ€ Morgan muttered reluctantly.
