Chapter 105
โMs. Atkinson.โ The sales assistant, Lisa, who had just been serving Amelia, immediately dashed out to greet the new guest.
It was Elaine Atkinson. She was a beauty with a slightly fuller figure, but her haughty gaze revealed she wasnโt someone easy to deal with.
โYour manager said the new arrivals are here today. Where are they?โ Elaine strutted into the store with her head held high. When she saw the silver fishtail dress Amelia was wearing, even she couldnโt help but be stunned, but her awe quickly gave way to envy.
Elaine erupted. โLisa, whatโs going on? How could you let someone else try on my dress?โ
โMs. Atkinson, your reserved dress is right here.โ Lisa quickly presented a knee-length dress in a delicate shade of blush pink โ a color Elaine usually adored.
But now, Elaine didnโt care about her reserved dress. Ameliaโs silver dress outshone everything. Elaine thought, โTomorrow is Mrs. Donna Kingsleyโs birthday party, and with Landon attending, I must be the center of attention.โ
โI want that one,โ Elaine demanded, pointing imperiously at Amelia.
Amelia, browsing handbags with her back to the commotion, frowned slightly. She wondered, โWhere did this spoiled brat come from?โ
โApologies, but that dress is one of a kind,โ Lisa said diplomatically. โHow about you try on the one you reserved, Ms. Atkinson?โ
โI donโt care. I want that one. Tell her to take it off,โ Elaine snapped, her tone brimming with arrogance.
Lisa was at a loss. โIโฆโ
โDo you want me to call your manager and have you fired on the spot?โ Elaine sneered, her voice dripping with menace.
Poor Lisa was caught between two high-profile customers and dared not say anything.
โUseless,โ Elaine sneered scornfully. She raised her chin and marched straight toward Amelia. โHey, the dress youโre wearing is mine. Take it off.โ
โHmm?โ Amelia turned her head and looked at Elaine.
Having been raised by Melissa as nothing more than a tool for arranged marriages, Amelia was no stranger to petty dramas like this. Following her principle of politeness before confrontation, she smiled faintly, โApologies, but Iโve already claimed this dress.โ
โThen Iโll pay double for it. Take it off,โ Elaine retorted.
Amelia smirked inwardly as Elaine tried to throw money at the problem. Unmoved, she said, โMs. Atkinson, Iโm afraid you wonโt fit into a size S.โ
Elaineโs expression froze momentarily before twisting in anger. โWhat does it matter if it fits? Iโll buy it just to let it sit in my closet.โ
โWell, Iโm not selling.โ Amelia casually resumed browsing handbags. She thought, โIโll never give up what I want to anyone anymore.โ
โI had this reserved.โ Elaine stepped before Amelia, clearly not planning to back down without a fight.
Amelia was losing her patience when a calm voice interrupted, โMs. Atkinson.โ
Elaine finally noticed Landon, who was seated in the lounge area. โLandon?โ Her face lit up. She immediately replaced her scowl with a sweet smile, hurrying to Landon. โThank goodness, Landon. Youโre finally recovered.โ
โNot fully. I can only manage in a wheelchair for now,โ Landon replied, his tone composed, his expression unreadable.
โDonโt lose hope. I just know youโll be back to your old self soon,โ Elaine said fervently, her eyes fixated on Landon.
To Elaineโs surprise, Landonโs recent illness had only made him even more attractive. Her returning this time had clearly been the right move.
โLandon, why are you here alone? Are you picking out a dress for Mrs. Kingsley? Iโd be happy to help,โ Elaine offered eagerly.
โNo, Iโm here with my wife,โ Landon replied nonchalantly.
Elaineโs smile froze.
Landon gestured to Amelia. โHoney, come over and meet Ms. Atkinson.โ
โSheโs Amelia Edwards?โ Elaine asked, staring in disbelief at the woman in the silver fishtail dress.
โThatโs right.โ Landon extended his hand, his eyes warm and smiling as he watched Amelia approach. She walked gracefully in the silver dress, each step captivating Landon.
โHoney, this is Elaine Atkinson,โ Landon said, holding Ameliaโs hand with an unmistakable tenderness. โDid she scare you just now?โ
โNot quite.โ Amelia returned a polite, faint smile, her tone as calm as ever.
Elaine stared at the couple, her chest heaving with frustration. She thought, โArenโt they supposed to be in a business arrangement? Everyone knows Amelia married Landon to claim her late motherโs belongings, while the Kingsleys needed a temporary lady of the house. But this? This looks way too affectionate.โ
โAnything else catches your eye, Honey? Letโs get them all,โ Landon asked.
โThis dress will do.โ Amelia tilted her head with a soft smile, and then added, โThough Ms. Atkinson seems to like it, too.โ
โShe canโt wear it,โ Landon replied, patting Ameliaโs hand.
Elaineโs face crumpled with indignation as she pinched her slight belly. โLandon, I am dieting, you know.โ
โIt still wonโt fit,โ Landon said flatly, pulling out his card and handing it to Lisa. โAdd the bag my wife was looking at, too.โ
โOf course, Mr. Kingsley,โ Lisa replied, swiftly completing the purchase.
Elaineโs eyes gleamed with a sudden idea. She said coyly, โLandon, I spotted a dress I like, too. Why donโt you cover it for me?โ
โYou didnโt bring money?โ Landon asked.
Elaine nodded.
โIโll call your brother. A bank transfer only takes a minute,โ Landon replied.
Elaineโs smile froze. Her face contorted as if she had just swallowed a fly. She thought, โThatโs not what I meant at all.โ
Amelia struggled to keep a straight face, almost laughing out loud. She thought, โThis guy really has no clue. Elaine wants him to gift her the dress, not talk about bank transfers.โ
Elaine tried again. โLandon, canโt you just buy me a dress? Come on, given the relationship between our familiesโโ
โStop right there. My wife is here. Watch what you say,โ Landon interrupted firmly, his gaze softening as it shifted to Amelia.
Landon thought smugly, โLook how upright I am. Amelia must be so proud of me.โ
Ameliaโs polite smile faltered at Landonโs inner monologue. She thought, โWait, heโs rejecting Elaine for my sake? Who said I needed him to stay faithful?โ
โGo change, Honey. Letโs grab lunch after,โ Landon said.
Amelia bit the inside of her cheek to keep from reacting and turned to head to the fitting room.
The moment Amelia left, Elaine crouched beside Landon and began her attack. โLandon, sheโs not good enough for you. Before you, she was entangled with Zacharyโโ
โMs. Atkinson, this is between my wife and me, and itโs none of your business,โ Landon said coldly, his expression grim. โIf you insult her again, donโt blame me for being harsh.โ
Elaine said, โLandon, Iโm just speaking the truth. Everyone in Norava knows she almost married Zachary. Sheโs not โโ
โBrooke,โ Landon called, cutting Elaine off.
Brooke, who had been waiting outside the store, immediately stepped in. Her expression was stern as she addressed Elaine. โMs. Atkinson, please leave.โ
โLandon,โ Elaine stomped in frustration.
Landonโs icy glare bore into Elaine, commanding authority without raising his voice.
Elaineโs indignation gave way to a flicker of fear, but she refused to yield completely. โHow could a man as perfect as Landon belong to anyone but me?โ she thought.
Elaineโs eyes brimmed with tears as she stomped again. โYou donโt need to throw me out. Iโll buy my dress and leave.โ With that, Elaine paid for her dress in a huff and stormed out, tears streaming down her face.
Moments later, Amelia emerged from the fitting room, catching sight of Elaine running out in tears. Puzzled, she asked, โWhat happened to her?โ
โShe badmouthed you, so I sent her away,โ Landon replied.
