Chapter 933

Patrick's voice hardened. "You're the reason General Sullivan is being questioned in the capital. Are you trying to implicate him in your crimes? How dare you?"

Aurora snarled, raging like a cornered beast. "Someone is covering for General Sullivan! I know it!"

Had she not been shackled, she would have lunged.

"It's not fair! General Sullivan leads Victory Pass; he should bear the most responsibility. You all fawn over Prince Rafael and Carissa, trying to bring down Barrett, but he knew nothing about the village massacre or the prisoner's death. He's being unjustly accused!" she yelled.

Patrick scoffed, turning to the scribe. "Write this down: Aurora has confessed that Commander Warren and General Sullivan were unaware of the matter."

"No! I never said that!" Aurora protested.

Patrick's voice cut through her. "There are too many witnesses for you to retract that now."

Aurora opened her mouth, but the words caught in her throat. She saw her predicamentโ€”escape was impossible. She slumped, her gaze dropping to hide the defiance burning in her eyes.

Patrick, observing her, admired Rafael's decisiveness. With Barrett's confession, Aurora's claims were meaningless. Barrett had commanded the operation; if he didn't know, how could Dominic? Aurora was merely Barrett's subordinate; she couldn't bypass him to take orders directly from Dominic.

Earlier, she wouldn't have cared about dragging Barrett down with her. Before the Ministry of Justice's arrest, she believed their bond was broken. But that day, when she asked him about his Victory Pass promise, he risked his future to help her escape. Then she knewโ€”he hadn't forgotten her.

Brought before the Ministry of Justice, she clung to the story of Dominic as the mastermind, knowing the king protected Barrett. Her confession would exonerate her husband. But she hadn't anticipated Salvador abandoning Barrett, allowing his arrest. And Barrett, foolishly, confessed everything. Had he blamed Dominic, their situation would be less dire.

Ultimately, Barrett still had feelings for Aurora, but Carissa held a far more important place in his heart. Whether it was guilt or loveโ€”perhaps even Barrett didn't knowโ€”he hadn't erased her, yet he wouldn't sacrifice Carissa for her.

With all the confessions against her, including Barrett's, accusing Dominic was pointless. She'd lost. She could only seek her own escape, but saw no path forward. Her only option was to protect Barrett's life.

She began her confession: "General Sullivan and Barrett didn't know. Near Fawnnin City, my troops clashed with Westhaven soldiers. They retreated into a village. The massacre was to flush them out.

"As for the young general's humiliation I didn't know who he was. I thought he was a coward who'd fled the battlefield. I tortured him because they'd killed several of my soldiers."

Aurora detailed the torture, but the scribe abbreviated it to 'tortured prisoner,' for the Westhaven envoys.

She continued: "After capturing them, I didn't expect Marshal Liam and his troops. I was terrified and confused why he'd go so far for a young general, even abandoning the front lines. I suspected the general's identity wasn't simple; I thought he might be Marshal Liam's son.

"Their army dwarfed ours. A battle would be disastrous. But Marshal Liam wanted to negotiate for the general. Shocked, I suggested redrawing boundaries and ending the war.

"I never thought he'd agree. I wanted to test the general's rank. When Marshal Liam agreed instantly, I knew the general was his son."
