Chapter 777

Norman highly valued Gareth's opinions, sharing a similar mindset. He held Carissa in the same regard. Gareth's pronouncements generally met with immediate agreement, largely due to Norman's prior expressed support for his fourth son.

Mikhail, however, voiced objections, though they seemed weak and unconvincing. Despite his weakened state, he felt compelled to speak.

"Gareth, you're mistaken. The Capital Guard has its own methods. Lady Carissa, from a military family, has served with distinction on the Southern Frontier. His Majesty wouldn't have assigned her such an important task if she were incompetent.

Moreover, this isn't just any caseโ€”it's treason. Her official orders could have brought us before the Supreme Court. Instead, she came directly to us and waited nearly an hour, demonstrating respect for our family."

He paused for breath. "Father, this case involves many parties with limited time. They wouldn't be here if it weren't necessary. We should invite them in. We can cooperate with any questions. If she sought to assert authority, waiting outside wouldn't be her method. Her actions show consideration, respect for you, Fatherโ€”"

Norman, increasingly irritated by Mikhail's rambling, raised a hand, shouting furiously, "Shut your mouth! If she truly respected us, she wouldn't be here! What dealings do we have with Grand Princess Eleanor? We receive numerous invitations yearly, accepting only a handfulโ€”mostly for facilitating introductions between young couples!"

"But there has been some contactโ€”"

"Did you not hear me? Shut up!" Norman's disappointment was palpable as he stood. "Men! If they knock again, bring a bucket of water and throw it on them to chase them away!"

"Father, you mustn't!" Mikhail rose urgently. "That would insult Commander Sinclair and humiliate His Majesty!"

Worry gnawed at Mikhail. Norman, a highly successful general from the late king's reign, looked down on everyone due to a title bestowed by King Sigmund. Sigmund had tolerated Norman's temperament due to his military achievements and lack of major incidents.

However, the current king's position was precarious, and he was wary of powerful families. The Duke of Oakspire's family could no longer behave as recklessly as they had under the previous king. Mikhail had warned his father countless times, but to no avail. Gareth's influence only amplified Mikhail's concern.

Chapter 727

Did they not consider why the Whitfield family's men had never received promotions at court?

The estate's inhabitants, particularly older veterans who had served with Norman, readily obeyed his commands, sharing his temperament and decisiveness. They immediately grabbed two buckets of water to douse Carissa.

"Commander Sinclair, watch outโ€”" Mikhail began, but Carissa had already vanished before he could finish his warning. Then, a surprised shout came from within.

"How did you get in here? How dare you breach Oakspire Estate? How bold of you!"

The buckets of water missed Carissa, who had deftly avoided them. She glanced at the two white-haired, wrinkled veterans with an elegant movement. Carissa respected her elders.

Without speaking, Carissa advanced. Since Norman hadn't given direct orders, the guards attempted to block her, but were no match for her agility. She reached the main hall entrance just as Norman roared, "She will not set foot in my estate today!"

He turned to see an unfamiliar young official at the entrance, pursued by his guards. Carissa smiled slyly. "I apologize, but I've already entered Oakspire Estate."
