Chapter 624

Carissa's words were clear enough for Zoey to understand. Zoey didn't dwell on the implications beyond her purview as a woman; her focus was ensuring the Earl of Silverstone's family maintained clean and transparent relationships with everyone.

After Zoey left, Jacob entered. It was unusual for Jacob to see Carissa alone, but he had observed the situation from outside after Zoey's arrival.

Aware of his eavesdropping, Carissa asked, "Do you think I handled that conversation appropriately?"

"Perfectly balanced," Jacob replied. "You couldn't be too direct, nor could you remain silent. The Southern Frontier troops are either Sinclair Army or Hell Monarch Army."

Carissa sighed. "Yes, I couldn't do nothing. But Zoey, in charge at Silverstone Estate, can't understand certain things too clearly; it might frighten her."

"Exactly. You struck the right balance, Your Grace," Jacob said. "I have other matters to attend to."

Carissa, momentarily startled, watched him leave. She'd expected further discussion, not mere praise. She smiled.

Jacob, Hell Monarch Estate's head archivist, was considered a strategist by Rafael. He managed the estate's affairs and personnel, essentially acting as steward, reporting directly to both Carissa and Rafael.

He was supposed to have a deputy, but Rafael's high standards meant the position remained unfilled. Jacob effectively held both roles, placing him in a high position within the estate.

Busy from morning till night, he was rarely seen. His assistant, Luke, handled day-to-day matters and the estate's errands. Despite the small royal family, the staff was substantial.

Carissa sometimes felt overwhelmed by the mundane issues from each steward during their bi-weekly meetings. Though she never complained, Jacob suggested Luke filter reports, bringing only essential matters to her attention.

It was truly thoughtful of him.

Carmen had been frequently visiting Hell Monarch Estate lately, primarily because Violet was learning swordsmanship and dance from her. A camaraderie developed, prompting Carmen's frequent visits.

Carissa kept a distance from Carmen. Just after Carmen's departure, Violet arrived at Orchid Hall.

She plopped into a chair and declared, "Ms. Lester is quite nice, but I've noticed you seem a bit put off by her."

Carissa glanced at her. "Having met her a few times, how can I say whether I like her or not? Janice, please prepare a drink for Ms. Spencer. She's sweaty; bring a towel too."

Janice curtsied. "Yes, ma'am."

Once Janice left, Violet continued, "She convinced Henry, and he'll cooperate with us."

Carissa considered this. "Vivi, what do you think of Henry?"

"Claire investigated. He used to be a scholar, but now? He's like an old mouseโ€”timid and cowardly."

"He's been married to Eleanor for over twenty years and oppressed for just as long. It's hard for someone oppressed for so long to fight back. I'm cautious."

"Could he be using our help to turn the tables? Even a mouse fights back when cornered. I don't believe he'd willingly endure this humiliation."

"Reluctance doesn't guarantee trust; his family also depends on Eleanor."

Violet nodded. As footsteps echoed, she smiled. "See? I told you, Ms. Lester is interesting. Next time, you should practice swordplay with us."

Carissa gave a mock glare. "Alright. Since you think so highly of her, I'll practice with her next time. I doubt she'll last three moves under my hands."

"Let's give it a try!" Violet replied, looking up as Janice entered. "What drink is this?"

Janice set down a cup. "It's ice tea Ms. Lily made today, Ms. Spencer."

"Perfect!" Violet drank it eagerly, then wiped her neck with the towel and tossed it onto the tray. "That's enough. You're dismissed."
