Chapter 1209

About an hour later, Trevor dispatched someone to escort Rosalind. Josie helped her choose the most delicate and exquisite clothes, pairing them with carefully selected jewelry. After deliberation, Rosalind decided to wear her own simple white gown and soft apricot-yellow cloak. The outfit was unassuming, more suitable for a garden stroll than a formal gathering to discuss her future.

Reaching the main hall of the outer courtyard, she was met by a grand scene and a large crowd. Then she saw him. His gaze met hersโ€”deep, piercing, yet restrained. Her heart thundered, her cheeks flushed, and she could barely meet his eyes. Despite her turmoil, ingrained etiquette compelled her to greet the assembled guests, moving forward through the crowd. Alice's joyful greeting, "Child, I know these days have been hard on you," brought Rosalind to the brink of tears. Fighting back emotion, she managed a choked, "Thank you, Mrs. Farrell. It's nothing, truly. A little hardship is nothing."

Natalie, the prime minister's wife, felt sorrow for Rosalind. How could such a talented and graceful young woman be subjected to such gossip? She said softly, "My dear, I'm here today as a matchmaker. Your grandparents wish to know your opinion. Do you consent to marry Thomas Farrell?"

Rosalind clutched her handkerchief, striving for composure. Her previously suppressed frustration surged. Tears threatened, and she couldn't answer. Everyone waited, but she remained speechless.

Thomas approached, nodding respectfully. "Ms. Young, may we speak privately for a moment?" Rosalind nodded slightly, murmuring her assent. Thomas smiled gently. "Alright. Please have your maid remain nearby."

Though the main hall offered a screen, its soundproofing was inadequate. They moved to the side hall instead. Josie followed, puzzled by Rosalind's hesitation, walking ahead without looking back.

Walking beside Thomas, he positioned himself on the windward side, shielding her. Looking up at his tall figure, she felt a sense of safety and protection. His cloak billowed around them, sheltering her from the wind. His presence was like a sturdy, protective mountain, and despite the uncertainty of their future, she felt an overwhelming warmth and happinessโ€”a feeling she knew she would cherish always.

Josie waited outside the side hall, leaving them alone. Thomas's gaze was sincere, tinged with passion. "Originally, our families discussed this, but I wasn't enthusiastic. First, I hadn't settled my affairs. Second, I thought I wasn't worthy of you." He paused. "Even now, I still feel unworthy." His hands gripped the armrests, his nervousness evident in his flushed face. "But I want to tryโ€ฆ I know it might seem like Iโ€™m taking advantage, and if you don't agree, I'll understand. But if you do, I promise to cherish you every day."

Rosalind's eyes shimmered with unshed tears. "But back then, I was so selfish. And now, my reputation is ruined. Don't you despise me?"

He shook his head, his words heartfelt. "You weren't selfish. On the contrary, I admire you. You're thoughtful, calm, and steady, always considering your family and honoring your parents and grandparents. I respect that deeply. Perhaps it was when you refused me that I realized I truly liked you. At the time, I didn't think I was worthy, and I didn't dare push it. But now, I'll be staying in the capital. You wouldn't have to follow me far away or leave your family. Though I can't guarantee I'll never leave the cityโ€”I'll have to go to war if it comes to thatโ€”I can promise that when I'm by your side, I'll treat you well."

He acknowledged the uncertainties ahead, but his feelings were clear. He was opening his heart, revealing his true sentiments.
