Chapter 1052

Thanks to Carissaโ€™s efforts, the Supreme Court was overwhelmed. She was everywhere, personally delivering meals to Rafael and ensuring his comfort.

The evidence had been collected, but the Supreme Court needed to verify it before arresting the culprits. This was a task Rafael could have avoided, but each criminal had powerful backers. To avoid offending anyone, Rafael decided to handle it himself. Let the noble families be angry with him.

Max was most pleased by this turn of events. He had been training vigorously, confident that a purged Garrison Unit would become a strong shield for the capital.

Alas, his joy was premature. After the Supreme Court's thorough investigation began, petitions flooded in, arguing that the Garrison Unit's duties overlapped too much with the Capital Guard's, calling for the Garrison Unit's disbandment.

The claim had merit, and Carissa formally requested a redefinition and separation of the Garrison Unit and Capital Guard roles.

Salvador didn't rule on the matter that day but summoned Carissa to the royal study afterward.

"Yesterday, I visited the Queen Dowager," he began, settling into his seat. "She asked about the women's academy. How is your progress?"

"Your Majesty, the academy building repairs are complete. We've acquired desks, chairs, and supplies. We are currently seeking a teacher," Carissa replied.

"The Queen Dowager takes the women's academy seriously, so focus on that for now. Leave the Garrison Unit issue for now," Salvador instructed.

Acknowledging his command, she responded dutifully, "Yes, Your Majesty."

Carissa wasn't surprised. During the court meeting, she knew the matter was unlikely to succeed without the king's approval. She suspected Salvador wanted to disband the Garrison Unit, reassigning some personnel to the Capital Guard, sending others to the Nightsteel Guard, or dismissing them entirely.

Seeing her obedience, Salvador felt a rare sense of relief. At least she wasn't like Rafael, who had become quite a troublemaker. Salvador could tolerate him for now, but he would enjoy correcting the man's arrogance later.

His expression softened. "The Queen Dowager misses you; go visit her."

Carissa nodded. "Of course, Your Majesty. I will visit the Queen Dowager with my mother-in-law on my next day off."

Salvador nodded slightly, his gaze lingering on Carissa. Despite her formal attire, her elegance was evident. A fleeting memory stirred him, but he quickly suppressed it. As king, certain things were beyond his reach.

"Alright. You're dismissed," he said, waving his hand.

"I will take my leave, Your Majesty," Carissa bowed and left.

As she walked, Barrett stopped her in the corridor.

"Carissa," he called urgently.

Carissa stopped, meeting his gaze. Aware of onlookers, she furrowed her brow slightly. "Is there something you need, Deputy Commander Warren?"

Barrett studied her. "I wish to warn you, Commander Sinclair. His Majesty knows you're behind the Garrison Unit's plans and has his own arrangements. I suggest you focus on your duties and avoid upsetting His Majesty. Be careful; you might suffer the consequences."

Carissa's expression remained unchanged. "Thank you for the advice, Deputy Commander Warren," she replied calmly.

Barrett, surprised by her lack of reaction, asked, "You knew?"

"I would never presume to guess His Majesty's intentions. If that's all, I must take my leave." She stepped around him.

Barrett, frustrated, called after her. "There's no need to distance yourself; I'm offering friendly advice."

Carissa didn't answer. Barrett blocked her path.

Carissa stopped, clearly annoyed. "If you have something to say, say it directly. Don't hide behind false concern."

Barrett hesitated. "Iโ€ฆ I was wondering if you know how Westhaven intends to deal with Aurora. Could youโ€ฆ tell me?"

Carissa gave him a cool look. "I don't know," she replied flatly and walked away.

Barrett lowered his gaze and didn't follow.
