Chapter 114

Hazel glanced at Maisha with concern. “Maisha, you shouldn’t really take a break. Why are you working while you’re in the hospital?”

Why unscrewed the thermos cup she held and offered it to Maisha. Maisha accepted it, taking a sip to soothe her throat. She lowered her voice softly. “The deadline for this script is starting soon. If I don’t finish it quickly, there might not be enough time.”

There was no point in arguing, so she stayed silent, absorbed in her reading. Hazel nudged her, and Maisha looked up instinctively, asking, “What is it?”

Hazel gestured toward the operating room door, prompting Maisha to look over. She noticed a man with graying hair, who appeared to be in his 60s, dressed in a white coat. Though only the area above his mask was visible, he seemed kind and even-tempered. He held a wooden board about two fingers wide. At that moment, his eyes showed danger.

Feeling a bit intimidated, Hazel whispered to Maisha, “What is he going to do?”

Maisha shook her head just as the operating room door opened. Charles had just exited the operating room when, without warning, the old man’s board landed on his backside.

“Ouch!” Charles yelped.

“I’m going to tear you up! I told you not to argue with patients, but you’re at it again, aren’t you?”

Charles hopped around, clutching his sore bottom while protesting, “Come on, Dad! This isn’t fair! I just finished surgery!” He was certain that a woman had lodged a complaint. Damn it! If he found her, he’d definitely pay her back for this beating. Anthony, slightly out of breath, waved the board at Charles while angrily scolding, “We’ll handle one thing at a time. First, the beating!” He continued to whack Charles’ rear. Maisha squinted and then burst into laughter. Just watching made her wince in sympathy.

Hazel, frightened, shrank back in her seat with a palpitation. Anthony was truly terrifying.

Just then, as Charles twisted to avoid another smack, he spotted Marsha seated nearby. Rage instantly boiled over him! He pointed at Marsha and shouted, “Was it you who complained? I knew you were up to no good!”

The board struck his buttocks again, and he quickly rubbed the aching spot. Maisha’s expression darkened as she realized he was blaming her. Any positive impression she had of him vanished instantly.

She jumped up, slammed the script onto the chair, rolled up her sleeves, planted her hands on her hips, and snapped, “How dare you accuse me?” She couldn’t let this slide. Anthony, fuming, took deep breaths with his hands on his hips and exclaimed, “You fool! How is she involved? I saw it all through the surveillance camera in your outpatient room!” Hazel quickly stepped in and wrapped her arms around Maisha. She was desperately trying to calm her down, saying, “Marsha, please keep it together.” She had to prevent this from descending into chaos.

Marsha couldn’t control her fury. If she didn’t make this jerk answer for his actions, she yelled furiously, “You’re not getting away today!”

But suddenly, Marsha felt an immense pressure as though a massive rock was crushing her chest, making it hard to breathe. She clutched her chest, feeling darkness cloud her vision, and she could barely fight it as her eyes closed heavily. There was a thud as she fell.

Hazel’s face went white with horror. “Marsha!”
