Chapter 5

Josie was dead-set on switching majors, and acupuncture was her golden ticketโ€”the one field she was sure she could nail and graduate from. No way was she letting this slip away.

She gritted her teeth and said, "I'm not in the wrong place. I'm seriousโ€”I came here specifically to learn acupuncture!"

"Alright, come on in," Delilah said, giving her a quick once-over. Her mask hid any hint of what she was thinking, leaving Josie wondering if the professor believed her or was just humoring her.

Nervous as hell, Josie stepped into the treatment room.

She figured switching majors wouldnโ€™t be that big a deal. Her pharmacology and anatomy classes had given her a decent foundation. She wasnโ€™t totally clueless.

Wrong. The moment Delilah started teaching, Josie realized sheโ€™d been way too confident.

Her mind was suddenly flooded with questions. Whatโ€™s a trigger point? Whereโ€™s this spleen meridian at? Why light incense before the needles go in? And hold onโ€”whyโ€™s it gotta be super slow and careful when youโ€™re poking those acupuncture spots? Man, seriously?

There was a mountain of info to memorize and a ton of details to keep straight.

One measly hour felt like a week-long crash courseโ€”the kind where one couldnโ€™t jot down notes and there was a pop quiz at the end.

By the time Delilah finished, Josie was sweating bullets.

She was terrified of flunking the test and blowing her chance to impress Delilah. If she screwed this up, her dream of switching majors was dead in the water.

โ€œSo,โ€ Delilah said, turning to her as they stepped out of the treatment room, โ€œhow much did you pick up?โ€

Claire, catching Josieโ€™s jitters, jumped in. โ€œHey, no pressure. Just spill what you remember. Wilcourtโ€™s not gonna bite your head off. Thatโ€™s a lot to take in all at once.โ€

Josieโ€™s heart swelled. She knew Claire was rightโ€”Delilah had gone into way more detail than she wouldโ€™ve if Josie hadnโ€™t been there.

Claire and Sean, both acupuncture majors, already knew this stuff like the back of their hands.

Her gut had been right about Delilah. Unlike David, whoโ€™d snap at her for blinking wrong, Delilah was patient as a saint during hands-on lessons.

A flicker of warmth hit Josieโ€”she wasnโ€™t about to let them down.

โ€œYou used two needle sets,โ€ she said, steadying her voice. โ€œThe first set hit the trigger point, Large Intestine 4, Governing Vessel 20, Stomach 40, Heart 7, Large Intestine II, Stomach 44, Liver 3, Stomach 36, Spleen 9, and Governing Vessel 26. The second set targeted Kidney 3, Heart 7, Kidney 7, Large Intestine II, Conception Vessel 4, Large Intestine 4, Conception Vessel 6, and Stomach 28.โ€

She took a breath and added, โ€œThe calming incense you lit had stuff like patchouli, cinnamon bark, mugwort, lavender, and sandalwoodโ€”at least, thatโ€™s what I could make out.โ€

Josie glanced nervously at Professor Wilcourt. โ€œDid I get that right?โ€

Wilcourtโ€™s eyebrow shot up. โ€œYou smelled the ingredients in the incense? Seriously?โ€

Josie nodded firmly. โ€œYeah. I took an herbal medicine elective my sophomore year. I crammed like crazy for a pharmacology contest to win some cash. Really needed it.โ€

Claireโ€™s face lit up. โ€œHold up, thatโ€™s why your name rang a bell! Youโ€™re the one who beat me out for first place and snagged that fifteen-grand prize, right?โ€

Josie winced. โ€œYeah, sorry about that, Claire. I was desperate for the money.โ€

โ€œSorry for what?โ€ Claire laughed, brushing it off. โ€œYou won it fair and square. What, you think Iโ€™m gonna mug you for it or something?โ€ She gave Josie a playful nudge, clearly not holding a grudge.

Delilah let out a low whistle. โ€œLosing and still bragging? If I were you, Iโ€™d keep that on the down-low.โ€

โ€œFor real,โ€ Sean said, peeling off his mask and throwing Claire a flat stare. โ€œTalk about embarrassing.โ€

โ€œHey, watch it, youโ€”โ€ Claire started, but Delilah cut her off.

โ€œAlright, you two, go grab some food. I need a quick chat with Ms. Pearson here.โ€

Josieโ€™s spine stiffened. So now she knewโ€”Delilah had overheard everything and knew she wasnโ€™t some official intern sent by the school.

Claire caught her panic and leaned in with a grin. โ€œChill, girl. If you really wanna learn, just lay it on thick with her. Maybe flash those puppy-dog eyesโ€”youโ€™re cute enough to pull it off. Sheโ€™ll totally cave.โ€ With a cheeky wink, she let Sean drag her off.

The room went silent, just Josie and Delilah left, her nerves buzzing like a live wire.

โ€œProfessor, I gotta level with you,โ€ Josie said, fidgeting with her sleeve. โ€œI wasnโ€™t straight-up earlier. Iโ€™m not an intern sent by the school, and Iโ€™ve never taken your class.โ€

Delilah raised an eyebrow, motioning to a chair. โ€œDidnโ€™t you take pharmacology as an elective? Thatโ€™s my course, so youโ€™ve kinda heard me teach.โ€

โ€œRelax, kid,โ€ Delilah said with a half-smirk. โ€œMy programโ€™s not exactly swamped with fans. If youโ€™re serious about learning, Iโ€™m game to teach. But that pharmacology contest you brought up? That was two years ago.โ€

She leaned back, eyeing Josie. โ€œYou were a sophomore then, soโ€ฆ senior now, right? About to graduate? Got an internship lined up?โ€

Josie nodded, her stomach in knots. โ€œYeah, but I tanked the exam for Professor Lawsonโ€™s research team. That means scrambling for a new internship, and thatโ€™s not why I picked this field. Iโ€™d rather switch to something I can crush than settle.โ€

Delilah gave a slow nod, her face hard to read. โ€œDavidโ€™s the big shot in his field, no doubt. If you canโ€™t join his crew, breaking outโ€™s gonna be tough. But acupuncture? Itโ€™s not some side hustle you just pick up. Why do you think youโ€™ll kill it here?โ€ Her voice had an edge, a spark of challenge in her eyes.

Josie knew she was on thin ice. One slip, and sheโ€™d tank her shot at acupuncture and piss off Delilah.

She took a deep breath, voice steady. โ€œIโ€™m not saying Iโ€™ll rule your field overnight. But Iโ€™ve checked my electives, and if Iโ€™m switching, acupunctureโ€™s my best bet. Iโ€™ve looked into traditional medicineโ€”itโ€™s blowing up here. If I go all in, I can make waves, maybe even outshine Professor Lawsonโ€™s crew.โ€

Delilah snorted, her stern look cracking into a grin. โ€œSmooth talker, huh? You saying Iโ€™m better than Professor Lawson?โ€

She chuckled, then got serious. โ€œMy programโ€™s the underdog on campus. Barely anyone sticks it out to a PhD. Professor Lawsonโ€™s classes? Kids fight like hell for a spot. His team? You graduate, youโ€™re goldenโ€”straight to top research gigs.โ€

โ€œYou didnโ€™t make Professor Lawsonโ€™s cut this time, but you could try again. Switching majors, though? No going back. You sure about this?โ€

Josie didnโ€™t waver. โ€œDead sure. Acupunctureโ€™s niche, but thatโ€™s why itโ€™s easier to stand out. Youโ€™re as big a deal as Professor Lawson in your field, Professor Wilcourt. Iโ€™m betting on this.โ€

Delilah studied her for a beat, then shrugged. โ€œAlright, you can stayโ€”but you gotta ace the final exam this semester. Only then will I sign your internship papers.โ€

Josie exhaled, relief hitting her hard. But before she could relax, Delilah added, โ€œYou nailed those acupuncture techniques you memorized. Shows youโ€™ve got a sharp brain. So, just passing the exam? Not enough. You gotta crush it.โ€

Josieโ€™s jaw tightened, but she nodded. โ€œDeal. Can I start shadowing you now?โ€
