Zoey could not bear to listen any longer and was just about to speak when a voice spoke up before she could.
“Isn’t this your first time here as well?” Sean walked over to Josie. He added, “You not only lack self-awareness but are also somewhat conceited. If Josie wishes to dance, I will dance with her. If she doesn’t know how, I’ll teach her. Our Josie is already so beautiful, clever, kind, and lovely. Can’t she have something she doesn’t know? Unlike you, who seems to be lacking in quite a few areas?”
Sean met Aiden’s gaze coldly. “Indeed, skills can be learned. The real concern is that someone does not feel embarrassed by their shortcomings, does not recognize when they are being unreasonable, does not acknowledge their mistakes, and does not realize when they are imposing undue demands on others."
Zoey was getting angry. “Mr. Brown, I’ve already clearly refused you. If you can’t understand the language, I don’t mind saying it again. We won’t work out. Please stop pestering me! I won’t dance with you, won’t accept your flowers, won’t accept any of your invitations, and frankly, don’t really want to talk to you. Could you please stay away from me?”
Zoey was always a polite and proper person, but this time, she was truly furious. At first, she thought she could just ignore Aiden’s pursuit and let it go, but he was so lacking in boundaries and even said such unpleasant things to Josie. He was simply unbearable. How utterly blind must she have been in the past to ever think that Aiden was a good person! ‘He is so hypocritical,’ Zoey thought.
“You were the one who approached me first!” Aiden frowned deeply, looking displeased at Zoey. “Since you liked me, you should be constant. Why be fickle? I admit it was wrong of me to reject you before, but now I don’t mind what happened between you and Colby. Can’t we start over? My family likes you very much. I also think you’re very suitable to be my wife. Our families are well-matched. You and I are equally matched in capability. Why not give this further consideration?”
His words shocked everyone present. In this day and age, how could he still have such regressive ideas? Did he truly believe that Zoey should obey her husband after marriage? Zoey was so astonished by his self-assurance that she was left speechless.
Josie said, “In terms of family background, the Harding and Clem families seem more suitable. As for capability, the current top-ranked student is Colby. And he’s the school heartthrob. You, a mere department heartthrob, dare to aspire to the school belle?”
Josie understood Aiden all too well. Because of his family background, academic achievements, and appearance, he always had a sense of innate superiority, feeling he could look down on everything. It was one thing to act like that towards a country girl like her, but what right did he have to be so arrogant in front of people like Colby, Sean, and Zoey, who came from similar backgrounds? Josie knew all too well how to hurt him. Only by attacking him through the capital he valued most could she defeat him so completely that he was left utterly humiliated.
Sean laughed out loud without restraint. “Josie just loves telling the truth! My apologies, Mr. Brown. The child is young and speaks bluntly. Please don’t take it to heart.” He reached out and took Josie’s hand, then cast a cool glance at the ashen-faced Aiden. “I will take her away now, so as not to disturb your enjoyment of the party! Miss Harding, care to leave together?”
Zoey was eager to leave as soon as possible. She had only agreed to accompany her father to socialize out of boredom, thinking she might drum up some business for her newly started company. Who knew Aiden would harass her so inappropriately?
“Let’s go, let’s go!” Zoey turned. “I’ll go with Josie!”
Aiden, who had never been treated like this, could no longer maintain his facade. He grabbed Zoey’s arm. “Miss Harding, Colby isn’t eligible to inherit the Clem Group. Do you truly believe he’s my equal in capability?”
