โI think Aiden said those things to Josie because of a misunderstanding,โ Zoey said. โIf heโs really fake, weโll figure it out sooner or later. And when that happens, I wonโt like him anymore. Donโt worry. Iโm not that dumbโIโm not gonna keep liking him no matter what.โ
Josie realized it wouldnโt be easy to change Zoeyโs future. The best thing now was to help Zoey see who Aiden really wasโbefore Natalie noticed her.
โWant me to go with you to talk to him?โ Josie asked. She knew Aiden might not admit anything, but it was still worth a try.
But Zoey shook her head. โLetโs not. I believe you didnโt lie, so thereโs no need to confront him.โ
โDonโt you want to know why Aiden said those things?โ Allison asked, glancing up from Josieโs diary. After reading it, she believed Josie. Josie had written it right in front of them. The entries went all the way back to when she first moved into the dorm. No one could plan something that complicated years in advance just to match up with what happened today. And even if someone could, there was no way itโd be Josie.
Allison just wanted to expose Aiden for who he really was and make him pay for hurting Zoey. But Zoey didnโt want that. She still liked Aiden and was too scared to ask him anything. She was afraid of what she might find out.
โI donโt want to know,โ Zoey said softly, her face a little pale. โI said itโs over. I misunderstood Josie before, and Iโve already apologized. Weโre still friends.โ
Adeline and Allison looked at each other, then turned to Josie. They were hoping Josie could convince Zoey. Maybe Zoey would listen to her now. But Josie knew words probably wouldnโt be enough. Once someone had made up their mind about someoneโgood or badโit was hard to change that.
If they wanted Zoey to let go of Aiden completely, they needed real proof. Josie had to find a way to show everyone who Aiden truly was.
โAiden already turned you down. That means he doesnโt like you,โ Josie said, holding Zoeyโs hands and looking her straight in the eye. โWe canโt stop you from liking him, but promise me you wonโt tell anyone else. And donโt confess againโunless he comes to you first.โ
Zoey looked uneasy. โJosie, Iโโ
โIโm with Josie on this,โ Allison cut in. โWhatever his reason was, he shouldnโt have treated you like that. You can forgive him if you want, but we canโt stand by and watch him hurt you again. Zoey, just promise Josie.โ
Zoey shut her eyes for a moment. โOkay, I promise. I wonโt tell anyone else I like him, and I wonโt bring it up to him again.โ
Hearing that made Josie feel a little more at ease. As long as Zoey kept quiet, Natalie wouldnโt find out she liked Aiden. And if Natalie didnโt know, she wouldnโt go after Zoey. At least for now, Zoey would be safe. Back in the original timeline, Zoey didnโt get hurt until years later. If Josie could expose Aiden before that, she believed Zoey wouldnโt get involved with him again.
โAlright, weโve read your diary,โ Adeline said, snapping Josie out of her thoughts. โAre you gonna rip it up now?โ
Josie took the diary. โYeah, Iโm gonna rip it up. Itโs like saying goodbye to who I used to be.โ
โYou shouldโve done that a long time ago,โ Allison said. โI know I probably shouldnโt say this, but I think itโs a good thing you left Professor Lawsonโs team."
