Chapter 30

Listen to this chapter:

โ€œI think Aiden said those things to Josie because of a misunderstanding,โ€ Zoey said. โ€œIf heโ€™s really fake, weโ€™ll figure it out sooner or later. And when that happens, I wonโ€™t like him anymore. Donโ€™t worry. Iโ€™m not that dumbโ€”Iโ€™m not gonna keep liking him no matter what.โ€

Josie realized it wouldnโ€™t be easy to change Zoeyโ€™s future. The best thing now was to help Zoey see who Aiden really wasโ€”before Natalie noticed her.

โ€œWant me to go with you to talk to him?โ€ Josie asked. She knew Aiden might not admit anything, but it was still worth a try.

But Zoey shook her head. โ€œLetโ€™s not. I believe you didnโ€™t lie, so thereโ€™s no need to confront him.โ€

โ€œDonโ€™t you want to know why Aiden said those things?โ€ Allison asked, glancing up from Josieโ€™s diary. After reading it, she believed Josie. Josie had written it right in front of them. The entries went all the way back to when she first moved into the dorm. No one could plan something that complicated years in advance just to match up with what happened today. And even if someone could, there was no way itโ€™d be Josie.

Allison just wanted to expose Aiden for who he really was and make him pay for hurting Zoey. But Zoey didnโ€™t want that. She still liked Aiden and was too scared to ask him anything. She was afraid of what she might find out.

โ€œI donโ€™t want to know,โ€ Zoey said softly, her face a little pale. โ€œI said itโ€™s over. I misunderstood Josie before, and Iโ€™ve already apologized. Weโ€™re still friends.โ€

Adeline and Allison looked at each other, then turned to Josie. They were hoping Josie could convince Zoey. Maybe Zoey would listen to her now. But Josie knew words probably wouldnโ€™t be enough. Once someone had made up their mind about someoneโ€”good or badโ€”it was hard to change that.

If they wanted Zoey to let go of Aiden completely, they needed real proof. Josie had to find a way to show everyone who Aiden truly was.

โ€œAiden already turned you down. That means he doesnโ€™t like you,โ€ Josie said, holding Zoeyโ€™s hands and looking her straight in the eye. โ€œWe canโ€™t stop you from liking him, but promise me you wonโ€™t tell anyone else. And donโ€™t confess againโ€”unless he comes to you first.โ€

Zoey looked uneasy. โ€œJosie, Iโ€”โ€

โ€œIโ€™m with Josie on this,โ€ Allison cut in. โ€œWhatever his reason was, he shouldnโ€™t have treated you like that. You can forgive him if you want, but we canโ€™t stand by and watch him hurt you again. Zoey, just promise Josie.โ€

Zoey shut her eyes for a moment. โ€œOkay, I promise. I wonโ€™t tell anyone else I like him, and I wonโ€™t bring it up to him again.โ€

Hearing that made Josie feel a little more at ease. As long as Zoey kept quiet, Natalie wouldnโ€™t find out she liked Aiden. And if Natalie didnโ€™t know, she wouldnโ€™t go after Zoey. At least for now, Zoey would be safe. Back in the original timeline, Zoey didnโ€™t get hurt until years later. If Josie could expose Aiden before that, she believed Zoey wouldnโ€™t get involved with him again.

โ€œAlright, weโ€™ve read your diary,โ€ Adeline said, snapping Josie out of her thoughts. โ€œAre you gonna rip it up now?โ€

Josie took the diary. โ€œYeah, Iโ€™m gonna rip it up. Itโ€™s like saying goodbye to who I used to be.โ€

โ€œYou shouldโ€™ve done that a long time ago,โ€ Allison said. โ€œI know I probably shouldnโ€™t say this, but I think itโ€™s a good thing you left Professor Lawsonโ€™s team."
