Kyle cursed under his breath. โDidnโt you tell her Natalie hasnโt shown up at school for three days?โ
โWhat does Natalie not coming to school have to do with her?โ Vincent shot him a sharp look. He added, โInstead of grilling Josie, why donโt you just try calling Natalie a few more times?โ
Kyle kicked a stool in frustration. โYou think I havenโt tried? She wonโt pick up. Her depression must be acting up again. Itโs all Josieโs fault. If Josie hadnโt hogged all the attention at the school competition, Natalie wouldnโt haveโฆโ
Aiden said as he walked in from outside, โShut up. Natalie isnโt that narrow-minded. If Josie stands out, itโs because sheโs got the skills. We should congratulate her.โ He shot a look around. โAnd donโt let me hear that kind of talk again. Just because youโre petty doesnโt mean the whole team is. Professor Lawson isnโt the type to be jealous of Josieโs success, either.โ He waved his hand. โAlright, get back to work. Since Josie doesnโt need us anymore, letโs just leave her alone.โ He added, โStop worrying about Natalie. Sheโll be back at school tomorrow. She couldnโt make it these past few days because she had a little accident on her way home. It has nothing to do with Josie getting attention. Everyone clear on that?โ
Aiden swept his gaze over the group. Everyone nodded in unison. โGot it!โ
Once everyone had left, Aiden stopped Gavin. โCome in with me.โ They stepped into the back room. Aiden turned to Gavin. โSo, what exactly did Josie say?โ
โJust what I said beforeโฆโ Gavin recapped everything for Aiden. He added, โIโve seen her practically living in the library, pulling all-nighters just to catch up on her coursework. Honestly, she had zero time to secretly pick up acupuncture. Maybe we really did her wrong.โ
Even though Aiden really didnโt want to admit it, he had to face the truth that Gavin was right. There was no way Josie was Delilahโs spy. However, he still couldnโt accept the fact that Josie could master acupuncture in just a month. He just couldnโt believe she was smarter than him. He felt that it was absolutely impossible. It was a fact that Delilah had helped her, whether it was with research papers or professional knowledge. Aiden felt that Josie had an unfair advantage over the other students, and that couldnโt be allowed to go on.
Aiden said, โGavin, I know youโre still hung up on the past with her, but things arenโt as simple as you think. Youโll find out what kind of person Josie really is soon. Now, get out.โ Aiden waved his hand dismissively, clearly not interested in explaining further.
Even though Gavin didnโt really get what Aiden meant, he still wanted to remind him. He said, โIf you have time, maybe try talking to Natalie a bit more. I just feel like sheโs got some misunderstandings about Josie. Honestly, Josie doesnโt have any real malice toward her. Natalie doesnโt need to take everything so personally.โ
As Gavin stepped out of the back room, he rubbed his temples. He had no idea if Aiden would actually talk to Natalie, but with the way Josie was acting now, he figured it was better not to get on her bad side. He thought, โNatalieโs basically my wallet these days. I really canโt afford for anything to happen to her!โ
After Gavin left, Aiden also left the lab and headed to the faculty building. He walked into Davidโs office.
โProfessor, these are the materials you asked me to prepare,โ Aiden said, handing over a stack of documents. He added, โHereโs all the experimental data Josie was involved with during her two-plus years on the team. I checked, and up until she left, she hadnโt completed a single experiment on her own. She did write quite a few papers, but not a single one ever got published.โ
David nodded. โGot it. Just leave them here.โ
Seeing that David had no intention of even glancing at the documents, Aiden couldnโt help but speak up. Aiden asked, โProfessor, do we really have to take it this far? Josie really didnโt do anything wrong. If anyoneโs at fault, itโs Professor Wilcourt. Isnโt it unfair for Josie to take all the blame for this?โ
