Chapter 109
Josie instinctively tried to follow Hayden, but a female officer stopped her.
"You can go home now. Weโll handle the rest. Weโll let you know when we have the results of the investigation,โ the officer said.
โCome on,โ Sean said, stepping out from a nearby room.
Noticing Josieโs reluctance, he gently tugged her along. โLet the police handle the investigation. Stop stressing over it, okay?โ
The two of them left the police station together.
Josie turned to him. โSean, I know everything.โ
She thought, โNo wonder that when I woke up last night, I saw him with Professor Wilcourt. He has been searching for me the whole time.โ
โYeah,โ Sean said, as if he already knew what she was about to say, โItโs getting late. Letโs go eat. Donโt keep Claire waiting.โ
Josie had no choice but to get in the car with him. It wasnโt a taxi; it was Seanโs car, and it looked like it had been parked there the whole time.
โDid you drive this car to the police station yesterday?โ Josie asked as she opened the door and got in. She added, โWas it Colby who helped you look for me? Did you guys break into the surveillance cameras of the nearby shops?โ
Sean hadnโt wanted to bring it up again, but it seemed like Josie wouldnโt let it go unless he said something.
โHere, take this. I already disinfected it,โ Sean said, handing Josie a pouch of silver needles.
It was the needle pouch sheโd lost at the scene of the fight yesterday. The pouch had been a gift from Delilah. Josie had used it to jab that mustached guy, and then somehow lost it in the chaos.
โSorry, I shouldโve taken better care of it. Please donโt tell Professor Wilcourt, okay?โ Josie pleaded.
Seeing her looking like a guilty little bird, Sean couldnโt help but feel both amused and a little sorry for her.
He teased, โWhy are you so silly? Professor Wilcourt already knew about it last night. Sheโs not mad at you at all. She even said that you using those needles to save yourself just proves her gift was worth it. Trust me, to her, your safety means way more than a pouch of needles.โ
Josie stuck out her tongue. โTo me, this is a life-saving favor. Iโll never forget it, and Iโll never forget what you did for me, either. A simple โthank youโ just isnโt enough. If you ever need my help, just say the word. As long as itโs something I can do, Iโll never turn you down.โ
โGot it,โ Sean said, clearly in a good mood, โI wonโt be shy about it.โ
Claire had reserved a private room at a restaurant, and by the time they arrived, all the dishes were already laid out. As they walked in, Sean gently held Josie back.
He said, โMy aunt doesnโt like being called โProfessor.โ Just call her โMrs. Wilcourtโ from now on. Claire will probably ask you about what happened, so think about how you want to explain it.โ
Claire still didnโt know about the kidnapping. Josie knew she had to tell her, but she didnโt want Claire to worry. She still hadnโt figured out how to say it. After thinking it over, Josie decided to just tell the truth. Claire had always treated her well, so Josie didnโt want to hide anything from her.
Once inside, Josie obediently sat down next to Claire and poured her a cup of drink. Before Claire could even ask, Josie blurted out everything.
She asked, โClaire, I got kidnapped last night. Sean was the one who saved me. The five people who took me have all been caught, and we just came from the police station after giving our statements.โ
โWhat?โ Claire shot to her feet, completely stunned.
Even Sean, who had just sat down, couldnโt help but look over in surprise. He definitely hadnโt expected Josie to just lay it all out like that.
โYou two really are something! How could you keep something this huge from me?โ Claire paced anxiously back and forth, clearly upset. She asked, โAre you hurt? Did those bastards hit you? I knew something was off with your face today. Did they rough you up? Do you know who did it? Why would they kidnap you?โ
After rattling off her questions, Claire reached out and took Josieโs hand, even checking her pulse like a worried mom.
โIโm really fine, Claire,โ Josie said, half exasperated, half amused. She explained, โI didnโt get hurt, and I wasnโt even scared. Honestly, it was just a scare. Those five guys looked fierce, but they were all barking and no biting. I handled them with my needles. They couldnโt lay a finger on me.โ
Claire checked Josie from head to toe, only relaxing when she was sure Josie was truly unharmed.
