Chapter 312

Lorenzo looked like heโ€™d walked off a movie setโ€”sharp, rugged features carved just right. His glasses had hit the ground in the fall, and now those icy, deep eyes sliced through the dim light like a knife. Anyone tight with Sebastian wasnโ€™t exactly the cuddly type. Throw in that tattoo peeking out from his collar, and the guy screamed troubleโ€”like a flashing red flag you couldnโ€™t miss.

Ella went stiff under that energy, too freaked to even blink, just standing there like a spooked animal. Lorenzoโ€™s eyes tightened, giving her a slow, cold look-over. Macro grabbed her wrist, laying on the sarcasm thick. โ€œOh, come on, girl, whereโ€™s your class? Grabbing a dudeโ€™s belt the first time you meet? Might as well pull his pants down and get straight to it!โ€

โ€œIโ€”I didnโ€™t mean to!โ€ Ella sputtered, scrambling to explain herself. She couldnโ€™t believe what Macro just said. She wasnโ€™t trying to flirt or anything. Macro eyed her iron grip on the belt and frowned. Jennifer, meanwhile, was just as thrown. Seeing Ella hooked onto Lorenzoโ€™s beltโ€”of all thingsโ€”left her frozen, mouth hanging open.

Ellaโ€™s panicked eyes shot to Lorenzo. โ€œI swear, I didnโ€™t mean it! Iโ€™m so sorry, so sorryโ€”โ€ she rambled, words tumbling over each other. Macro rolled his eyes. โ€œThen let go already, genius!โ€ He added, โ€œWhatโ€™s your problem? Apologizing like crazy but still holding on like a leech?โ€

Ella met Lorenzoโ€™s stareโ€”those deep, killer eyesโ€”and her heart kicked into panic mode. Her brain just shut down, blank with fear. โ€œSorry,โ€ she mumbled again, voice shaky as hell. Jennifer finally snapped out of it, blinking at the disaster in front of her. She jumped in, grabbing Ellaโ€™s hand. โ€œAlright, alright, youโ€™ve said sorry a hundred timesโ€”let go already!โ€

Ella blinked, out of it. โ€œHuh?โ€ Stephanie had seen Sebastianโ€™s car roll up but hadnโ€™t spotted him inside, so sheโ€™d gone out to check it out. One step outside, and there was Lorenzo, down on one knee in the snowy muck, with Ellaโ€™s little pale hand latched onto his belt like it was her last hope.

Her eyes bugged out. โ€œWhat theโ€”?โ€ โ€œElla, what are youโ€”?โ€ She started, then stopped, totally floored. Stephanie showing up snapped Ella back. She jerked her hand away like it was on fire, her face lighting up redโ€”bright, tomato red. โ€œI didnโ€™t mean it,โ€ she muttered, dying of embarrassment. She wanted to disappear, maybe melting into the snow.

Lorenzo got up, brushing off his wrinkled clothes slow and smoothโ€”like he was too cool to care. His face was all grumpy, and without a word, he turned and headed for the house. Sebastian saw Stephanie and frowned. โ€œWhyโ€™re you out here? Youโ€™re not even dressed for this cold.โ€

Stephanie pulled her coat tighter. โ€œYou werenโ€™t coming in, so I came to see whatโ€™s up.โ€ She started toward Ella, worried. โ€œElla, you good?โ€ Ellaโ€™s face was blazing, red as a stoplight. She jumped up, dodging Stephanie. โ€œIโ€“I got to go. Bye!โ€ she blurted, head down, booking it like sheโ€™d just robbed a bank.

Stephanie watched her go. โ€œUhโ€ฆ what?โ€ Jennifer hustled after her, heart still pounding. The people around Stephanie were wildโ€”especially that guy. His stare could freeze a pond solid. Macro grinned at Stephanie, all sly and poking fun. โ€œStefi, your friendโ€™s got some nerve, huh?โ€

Stephanie scrunched her face. โ€œWhatโ€™re you talking about?โ€ Macro cracked up, howling. โ€œShe almost yanked Lorenzoโ€™s pants off in front of everyoneโ€”ha!โ€ Stephanieโ€™s eyes went huge. โ€œWhat?โ€ Ella hadnโ€™t made it far enough to dodge that. Macroโ€™s words tripped her up, and she stumbled, nearly face-planting into the snow again.

Lorenzo spun around, locking Macro with a glare so icy it couldโ€™ve cut through metal. That usual cocky, carefree vibe he rocked with Macro? Gone. Now he looked straight-up dangerous. Stephanieโ€™s lip twitched. She glanced at Ella hightailing it away, then flicked her eyes to Sebastian.

โ€œNo way sheโ€™d do that,โ€ she said, dead serious, brow all creased. Sebastian reached over, messing up her hair with a lazy grin. โ€œYouโ€™re really buying Macroโ€™s nonsense?โ€ Stephanie shot Macro a dirty look. โ€œKeep talking like that, and youโ€™ll die alone, you get me?โ€

She groaned inside. Sheโ€™d never met anyone who could run their mouth as shamelessly as this guy. Unreal. Macro shrugged, smirking. โ€œHey, Iโ€™m just saying what I saw. No BS here.โ€ Ellaโ€™s little slip had almost turned Lorenzoโ€™s belt into a front-row striptease, right?

Stephanie wasnโ€™t having it. โ€œShe slipped, alright? Lorenzo was just close enough to grab.โ€ Even without watching it happen, she could figure it out. It wasnโ€™t some wild moveโ€”when youโ€™re falling, you snatch whateverโ€™s nearby. Pure reflex. Ella just happened to grab the most awkward thing possible.

Macro opened his mouth to push back, but Sebastian shut him down with a cold, sharp stare. โ€œYouโ€™re clowning on Lorenzo now?โ€ Back in Fiorenza, everyone knew the deal: Lorenzo could talk smack, but you didnโ€™t dish it back. Anyone stupid enough to try was begging for a midnight beatdownโ€”bag over the head, no chill.

Macro pouted, mumbling. โ€œI didnโ€™t even say that much.โ€ Stephanie rolled her eyes. โ€œOh, youโ€™ve said more than enough.โ€ When this guy got going, it was like he wanted you to sink through the floor. Macro gave her a weird look, then clammed up. Whatever, he thought, โ€˜shouldโ€™ve been born mute. Less hassle.โ€™

Inside, Stephanieโ€™s slippers were wet with melted snow. Sebastian glanced down, then at the butler. โ€œWhyโ€™s the porch still a mess?โ€ The ground outside was a thin sheet of ice when theyโ€™d stepped out.
