Chapter 309

Her voice was as cold as the ice hanging outside, her eyes flashing with a frosty edge. Caitlinโ€™s bottled-up feelings blew up. She snapped, her voice jumping. โ€œStephanie, what the hell do you even want?โ€

Stephanie hadnโ€™t even said much yet, and Caitlin was already losing it. Now that sheโ€™d opened her mouth, Caitlinโ€™s chest burned with anger. Stephanie kept her stare icy, a little smirk pulling at her lips, like she was laughing inside. She turned to the butler. โ€œGet it doneโ€”have Tyler discharged.โ€

โ€œYes, miss,โ€ he said with a quick nod.

Caitlinโ€™s breath caught. She jumped up, her voice shaky. โ€œYouโ€”youโ€™re out of your mind! Heโ€™s your brother!โ€

โ€œYouโ€™ve already messed up Oliviaโ€”now youโ€™re doing this to him?โ€ She was shaking, gripping the chair so tight her knuckles turned white.

Stephanie flicked her eyes up at her. โ€œDid you forget, Caitlin? Weโ€™re not family anymore.โ€

Caitlin stopped cold. Her face went pale, lips moving but nothing coming out. โ€œHow could youโ€”youโ€ฆโ€ Her voice broke, words stuck.

Stephanie grabbed the coffee pot, snagging a new mug and pouring herself more, taking her sweet time. As the coffee flowed, she said lazily, โ€œDonโ€™t you guys just love throwing your weight around?โ€

Not too long ago, theyโ€™d come at her hard, no holding back. Theyโ€™d tried to crush herโ€”hell, even wipe her out, she thought with a shiver. โ€œYears of pushing people around, right?โ€ Her voice was steady, dripping with contempt.

The Ashfords had history in Long Harbor, but the Harts? Their true colors were no secret. No digging neededโ€”theyโ€™d been stomping all over this place for years, piggybacking off the Ashfords. Caitlin, especiallyโ€”her name was mud among the socialite crowd.

Caitlinโ€™s breathing sped up. โ€œYou canโ€™t do this! Youโ€™ve already left Olivia hangingโ€”now youโ€™reโ€”โ€

โ€œBrother?โ€ Stephanie cut her off, her voice sharp as a knife. โ€œChoke on that word before I shove it down your throat.โ€ Her glare sliced through Caitlin, cold and fierce, like a blade ready to cut. Whatever Caitlin was about to say next got stuck, killed by that venom.

Nothing made Stephanieโ€™s skin crawl more than the Harts pulling the โ€œfamilyโ€ card. It turned her stomach, her fingers clenching without her even noticing.

Growing up, the Giovannis showed her what real family felt likeโ€”carved it deep into her, made her crave it. But the Harts? Theyโ€™d turned โ€œfamilyโ€ into something she despised.

โ€œKnow why I didnโ€™t help Tyler yesterday?โ€ Stephanie tossed out, out of the blue.

Caitlin blinked, caught off guard. โ€œWโ€”why?โ€

โ€œBecause he said I donโ€™t get loyaltyโ€”called himself my โ€˜REAL brother,โ€™โ€ Stephanie said, her tone freezing. She spat out โ€œrealโ€ like it was a joke, thick with sarcasm.

Caitlinโ€™s breath hitched again, her face scrunching up, totally confused. Stephanie tilted her head a little. โ€œStill not clicking?โ€

Caitlin frowned, still in the dark. Stephanie let out a sharp, bitter laugh. โ€œI canโ€™t stand your holier-than-thou garbageโ€”or this โ€˜familyโ€™ you keep ramming down my throat. Brother? Give me a break.โ€

If they were nice, sheโ€™d be fine with itโ€”but the Hart take on โ€œfamilyโ€ was like a rusty knife. One knife theyโ€™d gladly use to cut her up, Stephanie thought, her eyes icy.

She spoke again, her voice cold as steel. โ€œLucky me, huh, being your darling daughter. Anyone else? Theyโ€™d either be toast from Oliviaโ€™s fake car crash or pushed off a cliff by you, the so-called mom.โ€

Caitlin gaped at her, eyes huge. โ€œYouโ€”am I really that terrible to you?โ€ Her whole body buzzed with shock, legs wobbly in the sunroom. She started second-guessing herself.

Questions popped up in her mind. โ€˜What did I do to Stephanie? How did I turn into this monster in her eyes?โ€™ โ€˜Is it just her usual parentingโ€”tough loveโ€”that sparked all this hate?โ€™ She frowned, stuck in her head.

โ€œHa.โ€ Stephanieโ€™s cold laugh yanked her back. Her stare was pure sarcasm. โ€œI thought a few tough knocks mightโ€™ve made you take a hard look at yourself. Guess I gave you too much creditโ€ฆโ€

She didnโ€™t bother finishing, just glanced at the butler. He gave a small nod. โ€œIโ€™ll take care of it.โ€

โ€œNoโ€”wait!โ€ Caitlin burst out, panicking. She stumbled to her feet, throwing herself in the doorway. Her voice trembled as she looked at Stephanie. โ€œYou canโ€™t do this to himโ€”heโ€™s still yourโ€”โ€

โ€œBrotherโ€ got stuck in her throat. She forced it down. That flash of raw disgust on Stephanieโ€™s face from before hit her again. It wasnโ€™t just dislikeโ€”she flat-out hated the whole Hart crew, Caitlin realized, jaw tight. Ungrateful little punk, she fumed inside.

Chapter 309

She thought she had treated Stephanie nicely enough. The girl made one bad decision after another, and now she was dumping every bit of blame on them. Anger still burned hot in Caitlinโ€™s chest, coiled and heavy. But picturing Tyler stuck in that hospital bed made her hold her tongueโ€”she couldnโ€™t afford to go head-to-head with Stephanie. All those times theyโ€™d crushed her before? Now sheโ€™d have to eat that same crap, hands clenched tight at her sides.
