Listen to this chapter:

I didnโ€™t answer. I just stared at him, silently. Because even though I had nothing leftโ€ฆ I still had my secrets. And if this was going to be the end, Iโ€™d choose how it finished.

He stared at me, stunned by my answer. Then he laughedโ€“a low, cold sound that didnโ€™t reach his eyes.

Then he looked me up and down, eyes narrowing slightly again. โ€œAre you human?โ€ he asked. โ€œIโ€ฆ canโ€™t feel your wolf.โ€

I could tell he was angry at the turn of events, and I knew he would end up killing me, not like Iโ€™m even scared of deathโ€ฆ right now it felt like I needed death more than anything. Death didnโ€™t seem scary anymore. It felt like the only rest Iโ€™d ever get.

โ€œAnd Iโ€™m related to Damien,โ€ he said. โ€œAnd to the triplets.โ€

I met his eyes without flinching. โ€œLet me go,โ€ I said softly. โ€œOr kill me.โ€

Then he looked back at me. โ€œWhatโ€™s the thing you wanted Damien to tell the triplets?โ€ he asked carefully. โ€œYou spoke as ifโ€ฆ you were involved with them somehow.โ€

โ€œAnd they?โ€ he asked.

I hesitated, then asked, โ€œWho are you?โ€

He studied me for a long, quiet second, then finally said, โ€œIโ€™m Alpha Calvin. Of the Nightshade Pack.โ€

I held his stare, but I didnโ€™t open my mouth. Because I remembered what Damien told me once. That it was better if Olivia stayed deadโ€ฆ because there were people who would kill her if they ever learned she was alive.

But then he added something that made my breath hitch.

His brows pulled together. For the first time, I saw something in his eyes besides coldnessโ€ฆ was that concern?

He walked slowly to the chair across from me and sat, leaning back. His gaze never left mine. There was something different in his eyes now. Confusion. Maybe a little curiosity.

Oliviaโ€™s POV

His frown deepened. โ€œThen why did you marry him?โ€ he asked.

He gave me a slow nod. โ€œWe share the same great-grandmother. The Alphas of the Full Moon Packโ€“Lennox, Levi, Louisโ€“theyโ€™re my distant cousins. And Alpha Damien is my distant uncle.โ€

He finally stopped pacing and turned to face me, frustration flashing in his eyes.

I frowned at himโ€ฆ he seemed far too interested in the triplets. I drew in a slow breath, picking my words carefully.

โ€œYouโ€™re Damienโ€™s wife,โ€ he said slowly, studying my every twitch, every breath. โ€œSo what did you mean by he should tell them the truth someday? What truth?โ€

I let out a sigh, tired and hollow. โ€œDo whatever you want. Iโ€™m tiredโ€ฆ really tired.โ€

I blinked. โ€œWhatโ€ฆ?โ€

I didnโ€™t know why I asked, but I needed to know who he really was. If he was going to kill me, I at least wanted to know the name and identity of my killer.

I shook my head. โ€œNo. I donโ€™t.โ€

โ€œSo Damienโ€™s played me,โ€ he muttered to himself. โ€œAgain.โ€

I saw it in his eyesโ€“the shift. The shock. He didnโ€™t know what to make of that.

His eyes narrowed. I tilted my chin. โ€œHe married me as a campaign. Thatโ€™s all. He doesnโ€™t love me. Everything he didโ€ฆ everything he saidโ€ฆ was just an act.โ€

โ€œNow what should I do with you?โ€ he asked bitterly. โ€œHmm? What do you think I should do?โ€

I thought of the woman in my dream. The one who told me I had escaped my first death. Maybe it was better to let Olivia stay dead.

โ€œHis love is Sofia,โ€ I said quietly. โ€œItโ€™s always been her.โ€

I didnโ€™t trust Damien. But in that momentโ€ฆ I believed him.

The man let out an angry scoff and stood to his feet. He paced around the empty room with his hands tucked in his pockets.

The name sent a jolt down my spine. Alpha Calvin? One of the most feared Alphas in the region. Ruthless. Cunning. Dangerous. Nightshade Pack? That was just one pack away from the Full Moon Pack!

My heart pounded as I stared at him, utterly stunned.

Silence fell between us. It was heavy. Awkward.

And I was. More tired than Iโ€™d ever been in my life.

I shrugged faintly. โ€œBecause he took my parents and threatened me into marrying him.โ€

He let out a humorless breath, shaking his head. โ€œI donโ€™t even know what to do with you. Iโ€™ll have to think of something special,โ€ he muttered, half to himself.

So I finally spokeโ€“but only what I chose to say.

He studied me like I was some puzzle that didnโ€™t fit his plan.

My heart skipped, but I quickly forced a blank face. โ€œYes,โ€ I lied. โ€œIโ€™m human.โ€

โ€œAlpha Damien isnโ€™t stepping down,โ€ I said clearly. โ€œYou picked the wrong person.โ€

He turned back around, staring at me like I was either brave or stupid for asking.

I didnโ€™t respond. Because I didnโ€™t have to. He saw the answer in my eyes.

โ€œWait.โ€

โ€œYou think Iโ€™m a monster, donโ€™t you?โ€ he asked. โ€œIs that what you see when you look at me?โ€

I let my lips twitch sadly. โ€œTheyโ€™ll never know. And maybe thatโ€™s for the best.โ€

My throat tightened. I swallowed hard. He knew. He knew exactly who I meant. Still, I said nothing.

I gave him a bitter smile. โ€œAnd you believed it. You fell for it.โ€

โ€œYes,โ€ I whispered. โ€œEven though I was married to Damienโ€ฆ I fell in love with them.โ€

His jaw tensed when I didnโ€™t respond, and he leaned forward a little, his voice dropping. โ€œYou made mention of the tripletsโ€ฆ do you mean Lennox, Levi, and Louis? Alphas of the Full Moon Pack.โ€

He stopped.

โ€œYou keep talking like you know something I donโ€™t,โ€ he muttered finally. โ€œWhat deal? What truth?โ€

โ€œYou really donโ€™t know?โ€ he asked.

His jaw clenched hard. But I wasnโ€™t done.

He stared at me for a long moment, his lips slightly parted. Then he exhaled slowly and leaned back again.

He turned and began walking toward the door, but something inside me stirred, and I found myself calling out.
