124 Never Got To Open Them

Oliviaโ€™s POV

I blinked at Lennoxโ€™s question, pretending to think deeply. โ€œHmmโ€ฆ other memories?โ€ I tilted my head slightly, letting my fingers play with the blanketโ€™s edge. โ€œWellโ€ฆ I remember when Gabriel and I were younger, we used to sneak into the pack house kitchen at midnight just to steal cookies. The chef would always pretend not to notice.โ€ I gave a soft, fond laugh.

Lennox stiffened. Leviโ€™s brows twitched, and Louis looked down at his hands. I had done that with all three of them.

I continued, my voice light and dreamy. โ€œGabriel used to braid my hair when I was ten. He wasnโ€™t very good at it, but he always tried. Once, we ended up tangled in my ribbons for hours.โ€ I glanced up briefly, watching their expressions shift into shock, pain.

That day had been with all three of themโ€ฆ and it was hilarious. โ€œThere was a time,โ€ I added, reminiscing warmly, โ€œGabriel helped me build a treehouse behind the pack house. It was crooked and ugly, but I loved it. We spent the whole summer in that treehouse, pretending we were explorers.โ€

The silence in the room thickened. That had been Levi. He was the one who built that treehouse with me. Heโ€™d scraped his palms and bruised his knees. We painted it together, made up stories inside it. But I acted like I didnโ€™t know.

โ€œAnd once,โ€ I said with a wistful smile, โ€œGabriel gave me this necklace for my twelfth birthday. It had a little wolf charm on it. I never took it off.โ€

Louisโ€™s jaw clenched. Heโ€™d saved up for months to get that necklace. Iโ€™d cried when I opened it.

โ€œI think those are the strongest memories,โ€ I said, folding my hands neatly in my lap. โ€œGabriel was always there. Like my anchor.โ€

I finally looked upโ€”really looked. Lennoxโ€™s eyes were filled with tears. Levi looked like heโ€™d just been slapped. Louis looked like a mistreated child.

I tilted my head. โ€œWhy do you ask, Lennox?โ€

He didnโ€™t answer immediately. He just stared at me, his jaw tight. I held Lennoxโ€™s gaze for a moment longer, then looked away, acting calm, though I could feel the pressure building in the room like a rising tide. Something was shiftingโ€”subtle, but undeniable. They were digging now, prodding in places I hadnโ€™t prepared for. I had to stay ahead.

โ€œDo youโ€ฆโ€ Levi began slowly, his voice quiet, almost hesitant. โ€œDo you remember your fourteenth birthday?โ€

I froze for a split second, my pulse skipping. Why are they going there? I nodded slowly, masking the alarm buzzing under my skin. โ€œYesโ€ฆ I remember.โ€

I could feel their attention sharpen like blades. โ€œThat day wasโ€ฆโ€ I hesitated, then gave a soft sigh, eyes dropping to my lap, โ€œโ€ฆa disaster.โ€

Louis stepped forward, voice laced with concern. โ€œWhy? What happened?โ€

I looked up at them with just enough sadness in my eyes. โ€œI lost my father that day.โ€

Their expressions changedโ€”subtle, but clear enough. They knew. They knew the truth. My father hadnโ€™t diedโ€”he had been arrested. They were there. They remembered. But they didnโ€™t correct me. Just stared. I didnโ€™t blink.

Then Louis spoke again. โ€œDid youโ€ฆ receive three gifts that day?โ€

I stiffened inside. I knew exactly what he meant. They were talking about their gifts. The ones they gave me, which I never opened. The gifts had gone missing. I remembered crying over it, but never had the chance to tell them.

โ€œYes,โ€ I said calmly, meeting Louisโ€™s gaze. โ€œI received them.โ€

I saw it instantlyโ€”the hope lighting up in their eyes. That spark of eagerness that made my chest twist.

Lennoxโ€™s voice was low, careful. โ€œDo you rememberโ€ฆ who gave them to you?โ€

I smiled gently. โ€œGabriel.โ€

Their faces faltered. Slightly. But enough. I wasnโ€™t done. โ€œI never got to open them, though,โ€ I added softly. โ€œThe gifts went missing before I even unwrapped them.โ€

That part was true. But I let them draw their own conclusions. A heavy silence settled again. And then I saw it. Realization. Pain. They understood. I had never opened their gifts.

Leviโ€™s mouth parted slightly. โ€œYou never opened them?โ€ he asked, his voice hoarse.

I shook my head. โ€œNoโ€ฆ I was too overwhelmed. And then everything that happened with my fatherโ€ฆโ€ I trailed off.

Lennox stepped closer, his jaw tight. There was something in his eyes. He looked as if he wanted to say something, desperately. But he didnโ€™t. He held himself back.

I tilted my head, with a confused look. The way all three of them tensedโ€”like someone had struck a chord too deepโ€”told me something was important in those boxes which I never opened. Why did all three of them go missing suddenly?

โ€œYou mean the boxes were stolen?โ€ Lennox asked, unable to hide his emotion any longer.

I nodded slowly. โ€œI think so. When I remembered about the gifts and went to check on them, they were gone.โ€

Levi stepped closer, looking serious. โ€œDo you remember what color they were wrapped in?โ€

That caught me off guard. But I nodded. โ€œYesโ€ฆ one was dark blue with silver ribbons. Another was red velvet with a gold ribbon. And the last one was light purple with a white bow.โ€

All three of them froze. Louisโ€™s hands tightened. Lennox looked like heโ€™d just been hit. Leviโ€™s mouth opened slightly, shocked.

โ€œThatโ€™sโ€ฆ exactly right,โ€ Levi said softly. They knew I was telling the truth.

Lennoxโ€™s jaw was tight. โ€œDid you ever find out who took them?โ€

I shook my head. โ€œNo. I thought maybe a maid moved them. But everything was a mess after my fatherโ€™s deathโ€ฆ after that day.โ€

It was quiet again. Then Louis asked carefully, โ€œDid you ever tell Gabriel?โ€ He didnโ€™t mean Gabriel. He meant them.

I looked down, acting sad. โ€œNoโ€ฆ I didnโ€™t tell anyone. I was too sad about my father. I didnโ€™t talk to anyone for daysโ€ฆ not even Gabriel.โ€

Their faces changed. They looked hurt. Levi stepped closer, like he wanted to say something.

But suddenly, I pressed my hand to my head. โ€œMy headโ€ฆโ€ I whispered. โ€œIt really hurtsโ€ฆโ€

If I stayed a second longer, I might crack. So I did the only thing I couldโ€”lie.

โ€œOlivia?โ€ Lennox asked quickly, worried.

I shook my head. โ€œIโ€™m sorryโ€ฆ I just need to lie down.โ€

I turned away from them and curled up under the blanket. I didnโ€™t have to look at themโ€”I could feel their eyes on me. I kept my eyes closed, pretending to rest. But my thoughts wouldnโ€™t stop.

Those boxesโ€ฆ they werenโ€™t just ordinary birthday presents. Perhaps expensive gifts were inside. Gifts that meant a lot to them. The painful and confused look in their eyes when they realized I didnโ€™t open them told me that.

And I wishedโ€”God, I wished I could just turn around and ask them. What was in those boxes? Why did they mean so much to you? Why did they go missingโ€ฆ all three of themโ€ฆ at the same time?

But I couldnโ€™t ask. Not yet. If I did, they would know. Theyโ€™d know I was lyingโ€”about Gabriel, about everything. And I wasnโ€™t ready for that. Theyโ€™d start putting the pieces together. I needed more time.

But nevertheless, I wonโ€™t stay in the dark. In one way or another, I will find out what was in those boxes.
