Lennoxโs POV
For once, I wished Gabriel were here, not just on the phone. I swear to God, I would have punched him. Unfortunatelyโฆ
โListen, Gabriel, thereโs a situation,โ Louis said, sounding worried. I believe even Gabriel noticed.
โWhat situation? Listen, man, Oliviaโs not here. Has she gone missing again?โ Gabriel asked, his voice also worried.
โItโs not that,โ Levi interjected quickly.
โThen what is it?โ Gabriel sneered.
From where I stood, I remained silent, while my brothers exchanged glances, seeking my approval. I said nothing; I just looked away.
Louis continued, โOliviaโฆ has some memory loss. She has false memories. She doesnโt remember us. She doesnโt even know who we are. In factโฆโ He paused, inhaling deeply. โShe thinks youโre her mate and husband. She thinks we kidnapped her.โ
There was a long, heavy silence on the other end of the call. I could hear Gabriel breathing; nothing else.
Then came a sharp exhale. โYouโre joking,โ he said flatly.
โI wish I was,โ Louis muttered.
โYouโre telling me,โ Gabriel said slowly, his voice darkening with each word, โthat Oliviaโyour Oliviaโhas forgotten everythingโฆ and she thinks Iโm her mate?โ
โShe screamed it at us, actually,โ Levi muttered bitterly.
โOver and over,โ Louis added. โShe doesnโt remember anything, Gabriel. Not us. Not the pack. Nothing. Just you.โ
I remained silent, my jaw clenched. My eyes burned, not with sadness, but with pure rage. Rage that she had screamed his name and not mine. Rage that the only face her mind clung toโฆ was his.
Gabriel laughedโa short, disbelieving, annoying laugh. โWell, isnโt that just fantastic. Of all people, her brain decides Iโm the one she trusts?โ
โWe hate you,โ Levi reminded him bluntly.
โMutual, Levi,โ Gabriel shot back. โI didnโt call you for hugs.โ
โWe called you,โ Louis corrected sharply.
โWhatever,โ Gabriel sounded tired. โThis is a mess.โ
โNo shit,โ I muttered under my breath.
Then his tone shifted, becoming serious. โPut her on the phone.โ
โWhat?โ Levi and Louis said simultaneously.
โLet me talk to her. If she thinks of me, maybe I can say something useful. Or calm her down. You said sheโs terrified of you. Let me try before I come there.โ
I looked away, grinding my teeth. Every part of me hated this. Hated giving him access to her. Hated that he might be the only one sheโd listen to. But she was terrified of us. And if he could help her rememberโฆ
I sighed heavily. โFine. But if you say something against usโโ
โI wonโt,โ Gabriel said. For once, he didnโt sound smug. โJustโฆ give her the phone.โ
โFine!โ I nodded to my brothers.
We walked back to the room, the phone gripped in my hand like a blade piercing my chest. I could hear Oliviaโs soft, panicked whispers before I even opened the door. She was pacing, frightened, lost.
โSheโs not going to want to talk to us,โ Levi murmured.
I nodded. โShe wonโt have to.โ
We entered her room, and her eyes snapped to mineโwide, guarded. She took a step back.
โGabrielโs on the phone,โ I said quietly, my voice tighter than intended.
Her eyes widened. โGabriel?โ she gasped, nearly dropping her water. โMy Gabriel?โ
I couldnโt even look at her.
โYes,โ I muttered, putting the phone on speaker and placing it on the table.
She ran to it as if her life depended on it. Her hands shook as she clutched the table, tears streaming down her face.
โGabriel?โ her voice cracked. โMy love? Itโs you, right? Itโs really you?โ
My wolf growled deep inside me, writhing in agony. She called him โmy love.โ It felt like a knife twisting in my chest.
โIโm here, Olivia,โ Gabrielโs voice, calm, steady, almost gentle, came through the speaker. โHey, baby. Iโm right here.โ
A sob escaped her throat. โThey took me, Gabriel. They kidnapped me. IโI donโt know where I am. Iโm so scared. You have to come get me. Please. You said youโd never leave meโwhy did you let them take me?โ
She trembled, clutching the table like a lifeline.
Gabriel was quiet. Then, softer, โLivโฆ listen to me, okay? They didnโt kidnap you.โ
โThey did! Theyโre lying! They say youโre not my mateโthey say I belong to them. But thatโs not true, right?โ Her voice was desperate, breaking.
โTheyโre your husbands,โ Gabriel said calmly.
โNo!โ Olivia shouted, backing away from the phone. โStop lying to me! I donโt know them! I want you! I only remember you!โ
She curled into herself, weeping.
I couldnโt take it anymore. I turned away, staring at the wall, my fists clenched so tight my nails broke the skin.
But thenโฆ Gabriel did something unexpected.
He sighed. โOkay. Okay, Liv. Youโre right. I was joking. Alright?โ
She sniffled, pausing.
โTheyโre not your husbands. Theyโre my friends.โ
โWhat?โ Louis whispered.
Gabriel continued smoothly. โTheyโre helping me protect you. The packโs in danger. A war is coming, Olivia. I had to send you somewhere safeโsomewhere no one would expect. Thatโs why youโre with them. Because I trust them.โ
She blinked, breathing shakily. โYou trust them?โ
โI do. They wonโt hurt you, Liv. I promise. Theyโre my friendsโฆ and so theyโll protect whatโs mine.โ
Her body relaxed slightly. โSoโฆ Iโm safe?โ
โYes. Youโre safe. Just breathe, baby. Youโre okay.โ
She smiled faintly through her tears. โI was so scared, Gabrielโฆ I thought something happened to you. IโI kept thinking about youโฆ I still want to fight with you. I want to protect you, too.โ
โI know,โ Gabriel said. โAnd you will. But right now, I need you to rest. Trust them. For me.โ
She nodded slowly, wiping her tears. โOkayโฆ okay. I trust them. For you.โ
I swallowed hard, my heart aching. Gabriel had done what none of us could: made her believe. Calmed her. And it killed me inside.
The silence after her last words was thickโlike the air itself held its breath. Olivia had stopped crying, her trembling slowed. She sat near the table, her hand resting gently against the phone as if touching it would keep Gabriel close.
โI want to see you,โ she whispered, soft and pleading. โCan you come get me now?โ
On the other end, Gabriel hesitated. Then, with maddening ease, he answered, โNot yet, Liv. I wish I could, but I canโt come right now. Itโs not safeโfor either of us.โ
Her lips trembled. โButโwhy?โ
โBecause the warโs just starting. I need to stay here and lead the others. But Iโll call you every day. Iโll talk to you until this is over. And when the war endsโฆโ His voice softened to a gentle promise. โIโll come get you myself. I swear.โ
Her face softened like a storm giving way to sunlight. โYou promise?โ
โI do,โ he said. โYouโre mine. Iโd never leave you behind.โ
And thenโฆ she smiledโa small, heartbreaking smile, full of hope and longing.
โI love you,โ she murmured.
A blade twisted inside my chest. I froze. My wolf howled in agony, clawing inside my chest. She said she loved him.
Oliviaโour mateโhad never said that to us. Not once. Not even when she had her memories. But she had said it to him. Freely. Softly. As if it had always been true.
โI love you too, Olivia,โ Gabriel replied, his voice low and smooth. โI always will.โ
Olivia smiled a big, bright smile.
โI have to go now, dearโฆ Iโll call tomorrow, okay? Be a good girl for me, alright?โ
Olivia nodded. โYes, darling. I will.โ
My heart sank, and the call ended.
