109 In His Unconscious State

Oliviaโ€™s POV

For another few minutes, the healer attended to Lennox. Satisfied with his condition, she nodded, rose to her feet, and said, โ€œHeโ€™s fine, but itโ€™ll take a few hours for him to wake. I still recommend someone stays with him in case he wakes up.โ€

โ€œI will stay with him,โ€ Anita said immediately, cutting me off. I wanted to say it. I wanted to stay with him. Despite everything, despite our strained relationship, I couldnโ€™t return to my room and feel at ease knowing he was unconscious.

โ€œNo, Anita, you canโ€™t watch over Lennox. You are sick,โ€ Louis immediately refused.

Anita frowned and shook her head. โ€œI can manageโ€ฆ I really want to stay with him. It is my dutyโ€ฆโ€ she argued, but I cut her off with a scoff.

โ€œYour duty?โ€ I asked, arching a brow, my hands still intertwined with Lennoxโ€™s. โ€œLast time I checked, Anita, you are just a concubine. And I?โ€ I smirked. โ€œIโ€™m his wife. His mate. If anyone stays, itโ€™s going to be me. So I advise you to go back to your room, Anita. Youโ€™re still unwellโ€”according to you.โ€

A deep frown spread across Anitaโ€™s face as she glared at me. If looks could kill, Iโ€™d already be deadโ€”but I didnโ€™t care. I turned to Levi and Louis, who stood at the edge of the bed. โ€œYou both can leave. Iโ€™ll attend to him. After all, it is my duty as his wife,โ€ I said firmly, leaving no room for argument.

Levi and Louis exchanged a glance before nodding in agreement.

As they reluctantly turned to leave, Anitaโ€™s voice rang out sharply, halting them.

โ€œYou canโ€™t let her stay!โ€ she snapped, her eyes filled with disbelief. โ€œShe hates Lennoxโ€”he hates her too! What if she tries to kill him in his sleep?โ€

The room fell into stunned silence.

I turned my head slowly, narrowing my eyes at her. โ€œYou know you could be persecuted for saying this?โ€ I warned.

โ€œDamn you,โ€ she hissed, her voice trembling with anger. โ€œLennox will not be happy waking to see you.โ€

โ€œAnd yet,โ€ I cut her off coldly, โ€œhe woke up calling for me, not you.โ€

Her face paled, her lips parting as if to argue, but no words came.

โ€œIf I hated Lennox,โ€ I continued, my voice low but filled with anger, โ€œI wouldnโ€™t be here. Hell, Iโ€™d be in my room, taking a nice nap.โ€

Anitaโ€™s lip quivered. She turned to Levi and Louis, desperation in her eyes. โ€œYouโ€™re really going to let her stay? Alone with him?โ€

Louis nodded without hesitation. โ€œAnita, sheโ€™s his wife. His mate. That means something, whether you like it or not.โ€

โ€œYou should rest,โ€ Levi added gently. โ€œYouโ€™re still recovering. Donโ€™t make this worse for yourself.โ€

Anita opened her mouth, then closed it again, a tremble running through her. Her eyes glistened with tears, but she said nothing more as she spun on her heels and stormed out of the room.

I turned back to Lennox, brushing a strand of hair from his forehead.

God, Iโ€™m supposed to hate you. Iโ€™m supposed to walk away. But here I amโ€”wanting to stay.

โ€œOlivia, if you need anything or if he wakes, just reach out through the mind link,โ€ Levi said, and I nodded, my gaze still fixed on Lennox.

Levi and Louis left the room, leaving me alone with Lennox. Silence enveloped the room like a heavy blanketโ€”calm, yet suffocating.

I glanced down at our intertwined hands and sighed softly. I should let go. Slowly, I tried to move my hand away from his, but even in his unconscious state, Lennoxโ€™s fingers tightened around mine, as if refusing to let me go.

I froze.

My chest tightened, something warm and painful blooming deep inside. Why did that small gesture affect me so much?

With a shaky breath, I gave in and lowered myself onto the edge of the bed, my free hand gently brushing his hair back. I watched him in silence, studying his faceโ€”the soft lashes that fanned across his cheeks, the slight cut on his brow, the slight parting of his lips as he breathed steadily.

Still handsome. Still breathtaking. And I hated that I still found him so attractive.

โ€œIโ€™m supposed to hate you,โ€ I whispered, almost pleadingly. โ€œYou gave me every reason to. You broke me, Lennoxโ€ฆ over and over. So why the hell does it hurt to see you like this?โ€

I swallowed the lump forming in my throat, blinking fast.

โ€œYou idiot,โ€ I muttered, brushing my thumb over his knuckles. โ€œWhen I saw you on the ground, bleeding, unconsciousโ€ฆ I thought you were going to die. Iโ€™ve never been so scared in my life.โ€ My voice cracked on the last word, and I bit my bottom lip hard to stop it from trembling.

โ€œI shouldโ€™ve walked away. Shouldโ€™ve let someone else care. But I couldnโ€™t. Because even when I try to hate youโ€ฆ I canโ€™t.โ€

I looked down at our hands again, his fingers still wrapped around mine. It was infuriating. And comforting. And terrifying.

I leaned down slowly, resting my forehead gently against the back of his hand. โ€œJust wake up,โ€ I whispered. โ€œPleaseโ€ฆ just be fine.โ€

And then suddenly, a sound. Barely audible. So soft I thought I imagined it.

My head lifted quickly, my eyes narrowing on his face. His brows twitched. His lips movedโ€ฆ and then again. Mumbled, broken words fell from his mouth like whispers carried by the wind.

And then, I heard it. The melody. My breath caught in my throat.

โ€œโ€ฆheart beats fastโ€ฆ colors and promisesโ€ฆโ€

My breath hitched. I knew that song. My song. โ€œA Thousand Years.โ€ The same one he used to sing to me. He would hum it into my ear as he held me close, whispering that heโ€™d always be here.

Tears spilled freely down my cheeks as he continued in his sleep, his voice gravelly, laced with unconscious slurs, but still softโ€”still unmistakably Lennox.

โ€œโ€ฆbut watching you stand aloneโ€ฆ all of my doubtโ€ฆ suddenly goes away somehowโ€ฆโ€

My hands trembled as I held his tighter. He remembered. Even now, even like thisโ€”he remembered me.

โ€œโ€ฆ I have died every day waiting for youโ€ฆ darling, donโ€™t be afraid, I have loved you for a thousand yearsโ€ฆโ€

A sob broke past my lips.

โ€œYou idiot,โ€ I whispered, brushing a thumb under his eye. โ€œWhy now? Why that song?โ€ I sniffled, smiling through the tears. โ€œYou really know how to hurt meโ€ฆ and heal meโ€ฆ all at once.โ€

He stirred faintly at my touch, his lips still forming the words.

โ€œโ€ฆand all along I believed I would find youโ€ฆโ€

I leaned closer, pressing a gentle kiss to his forehead, breathing in his scent.

โ€œYou still remembered,โ€ I murmured.

I lowered my head, resting it beside him, our hands still tightly entwined. And as he drifted deeper into unconsciousness, the last soft notes slipped from his lipsโ€”like a promise echoing across the room.

โ€œโ€ฆI have loved youโ€ฆ for a thousand yearsโ€ฆ Iโ€™ll love you for a thousand moreโ€ฆโ€
