Chapter 5
“I have the money you need, Mr. Morgan!” Bobby Kane cried, running toward Cameron. “You must be Mr. Kane,” Cameron said gently. “Please, call me Bob, sir!” Bobby wiped the sweat from his brow, looking panicked. “I apologize for making you wait. Why weren’t you informed of my arrival, Mr. Morgan?”
The man before him was Lord Blackheart's superior—a single word could decide Bobby's fate.
“Don’t worry, Mr. Kane. You weren’t late; I arrived early,” Cameron said with a smile.
Bobby was relieved. He'd expected a cruel man, but Cameron was courteous and humble.
“Thank you, Mr. Morgan!” Bobby said gratefully. “Here’s the one million dollars.”
“You can keep it. I no longer need it. I apologize for the inconvenience,” Cameron said, shaking his head.
“Not at all, sir!” Bobby said, still slightly apprehensive. “Did something happen?”
“A minor interruption. Do you know Archie Price?”
“Archie Price? Yes, the eldest son of the Price family. His father, Magnus, works with us on several projects.”
“He was here earlier, discussing a joint venture. He offered us thirty percent of the profits. Do you know him?”
Cameron shook his head. “No, I was just asking.”
Bobby, however, was no ordinary man. He’d earned Blackheart’s approval and become CEO of Darth Holdings. He understood Cameron’s unspoken message.
“I don’t believe the Price family’s offer is genuine. Perhaps we should decline,” Bobby said lightly.
“Yes,” Cameron nodded.
Bobby breathed a sigh of relief. He’d been right.
“May I give you a tour of the company, Mr. Morgan?”
“Perhaps next time, Mr. Kane. I have urgent matters,” Cameron said, his thoughts already on the hair bow Madison had mentioned—likely belonging to one of her best friends.
“Of course. Please contact me whenever you’re free. Here’s my card,” Bobby said, handing Cameron his business card.
Cameron accepted it with a smile. “Thank you, Mr. Kane. Your help in managing the company will be invaluable.”
“It’s my honor, Mr. Morgan,” Bobby said earnestly. “My driver can escort you if you need.”
“That’s not necessary. I’ll manage.”
“Very well, sir.”
Cameron turned to leave when a young woman in an off-white dress hurried in, nearly colliding with him.
“I’m so sorry!” she apologized.
Cameron found her strangely familiar, though they’d never met. She apologized and headed for the elevator, then spotted Bobby. Surprise flickered across her face. “What a coincidence, Mr. Kane!” She’d come to see him.
“Good afternoon, Ms. Jennings,” Bobby greeted politely.
Dakota Jennings handed him a proposal. “This is my family’s proposal for your company’s city project. Please review it.” She was nervous; this was her family’s last hope.
The Jennings family, though not among the wealthiest, were old Yrando blood. Recent troubles—her grandfather’s gambling addiction and her father’s business failure—had left them deeply in debt. Without their reputation, they’d be bankrupt. Their comeback hinged on this partnership with Darth Holdings. Dakota had revised the proposal countless times.
Bobby skimmed the proposal and closed it.
Dakota’s brows furrowed. “Is there a problem, Mr. Kane?”
“Frankly, Ms. Dakota, we prefer to work with financially stable businesses. Your family is facing a crisis,” Bobby stated directly. He knew the Jennings’ situation. Darth Holdings wouldn’t work with them.
Hope drained from Dakota, but she persisted. This was their last chance.
“Mr. Kane, we won’t let you down! For this project, we’ll give your company fifty to sixty percent of the profits!”
Cameron’s eyes glinted. “The Jennings family? Dakota Jennings?” He recognized her as Madison’s best friend and realized the reason for her familiarity. He’d heard of her. Could she be…?
“I’m sorry, Ms. Dakota. I can’t help you,” Bobby interrupted Cameron’s thoughts.
“Please, give us a chance!” Dakota pleaded.
“I’m truly sorry, Ms. Dakota,” Bobby said, shaking his head.
Dakota, seeing his impatience, resigned herself. “I understand. I apologize for wasting your time.”
She turned to leave when Cameron spoke. “Mr. Kane, Ms. Dakota seems genuine. Perhaps reconsider her proposal?”
Dakota was stunned, deeply grateful. But she knew no one could sway Bobby Kane…
