Chapter 163
Seeing Cameron squat, Laura felt secretly happy. She never thought he would still carry her.
"Okay!" she agreed, nodding without hesitation. She stood from the bench, carefully lowering herself onto his back.
Cameron's heart pounded as her soft body rested against him. He took a deep breath, then carried her toward the waterfront exit. It felt the same as seven years ago: her light, soft body; his familiar, now stronger, back.
Laura rested her head against his back, feeling particularly at ease and happy. Cameron paused, remembering it was her favorite position. She always had liked resting her head there, saying it made her feel safe.
Could she still have feelings for him? Impossible. If she cared, why had she been so cold and cruel? Why had she abandoned him after using him? He wouldn't make the same mistake again. He wouldn't fall for her again!
Just then, Laura's soft voice broke through his denial. "Cameron, do you remember what happened when you carried me for the first time?"
Cameron was stunned. Did she remember? "I remember," he replied coldly. "So what?"
Laura wasn't sad at his coldness; she felt a touch of tenderness. Knowing his sharp tongue hid a tender heart, she realized that if he didn't care, he wouldn't be carrying her. This idiot was still the same.
Many times, Laura had wanted to tell Cameron the truth about the past. But the Jones family loomed large. Telling him would risk everything for her. She didn’t want him to risk anything for her again.
And then there was the Xander family. Even the Jones family couldn't compare to their military might. If Cameron offended the Xanders because of her, the consequences would be disastrous. Even if she pleaded, they might not forgive him.
So she endured, burying her love for him deep within.
Cameron didn't know her thoughts. Seeing her silence, he assumed his words had upset her. She'll only be in Yrando for a few days, he thought. I'll just treat her better this time.
He softened his tone. "Ms. Jones, you aren't that sensitive, are you? My words weren't that harsh, were they?"
His words brought Laura back to reality. She didn't answer, but smiled, touched. She gently wrapped her arms around his neck.
Cameron's heart skipped a beat. What did she want?
