Chapter 62

Chase shot up from his chair, slamming his fist on the table. โ€œThatโ€™s absolute nonsense! How can you possibly jump to such conclusions?โ€

โ€œMr. Reyes, please, take a breath,โ€ his assistant, Mark, urged, trying to calm him down.

Chase adjusted his collar, sat back down, and took a sip of his iced coffee. His eyes turned icy as he focused on the private investigator, Joshua. He said, โ€œGo on.โ€

โ€œMr. Reyes, in todayโ€™s digital world, itโ€™s nearly impossible for someone to vanish without a trace. Even if Mrs. Reyes used cash for her travels, sheโ€™d still need identification to purchase transportation tickets.โ€

โ€œShe might have taken an unregistered cabโ€ฆโ€

โ€œSure, thatโ€™s possible. Mrs. Reyes might have been trying to avoid leaving a trail, but sheโ€™d still need a place to stay. Itโ€™s unlikely someone like her would stay at a cheap motel, right? Plus, even those places require identification.โ€

Joshua continued, โ€œI found no trace of her at any hotels, and I checked the rental market and properties under Mr. Reyesโ€™ nameโ€”nothing. Iโ€™ve also scoured every social spot in the cityโ€”internet cafes, bars, private cinemasโ€”and found no sign of her. I heard that a designer wedding dress, stained with blood and slashed, was pulled from the river the day after your wedding. My advice, Mr. Reyes, is to consider contacting the police. If sheโ€™s alive, I might be able to find her; if not, thatโ€™s beyond my expertise.โ€

Chase hurled his coffee cup, shattering it. โ€œGet out! My wife is just upset with me. Nothingโ€™s happened to her!โ€

The private investigator hesitated, then said, โ€œMr. Reyes, Iโ€™m sorry for the intrusion.โ€

Mark quickly interjected, โ€œMr. Reyes, Iโ€™ll see him out. Maybe we can get more information on your wife later.โ€

Chase sat stunned, silent and motionless.

Mark rushed after the investigator, settling the remaining payment outside as agreed. I leaned against the door, eavesdropping.

โ€œSorry, Joshua, our CEO is just distraught over his wifeโ€™s disappearance. Heโ€™s not usually like this.โ€

โ€œYeah, I understand.โ€

โ€œJoshua, can you tell me if you found anything else?โ€

Joshua paused, thinking. โ€œBased on what Iโ€™ve found and that wedding dress, thereโ€™s a strong chance Mrs. Reyes met with foul play, butโ€ฆโ€

โ€œBut what? Go on.โ€

โ€œThereโ€™s another possibility. I donโ€™t know if youโ€™ve heard, but many women have been disappearing around here lately. If she wasnโ€™t murdered, this could be the explanation.โ€

โ€œIโ€™ve heard about that. Itโ€™s mostly women, right? Joshua, can you dig into this? Heโ€™s on edge trying to find his wife.โ€

โ€œBut that bloody wedding dressโ€ฆโ€

Mark pressed on, โ€œHonestly, I canโ€™t believe sheโ€™s been murdered. Sheโ€™s so kind-hearted and always helps homeless kids. Sheโ€™s beautiful inside and out and not the type to have enemies. Who would want to hurt her? Plus, she mentioned someone was following her before she disappeared.โ€

โ€œReally? I didnโ€™t know that.โ€

โ€œYeah, I forgot to mention it. If you have any leads, please help. Weโ€™ll make it worth your while if you find her.โ€

Joshua glanced back at Chase inside and lowered his voice, โ€œMark, since I took this case, Iโ€™ll keep at it. But Iโ€™ve got to be upfront about the risks. If she hasnโ€™t been murdered but taken, thatโ€™s a bad situation, too.โ€
