Chapter 6

I watched him with a sarcastic smirk. โ€œChase, do you remember what I told you on the phone? I was asking for help! Why didnโ€™t you come to my rescue? Whatโ€™s the point of this charade now? Who are you trying to fool?โ€

Nicole interjected sharply. โ€œThatโ€™s impossible! There must be a reason for my sisterโ€™s disappearance. Her wedding dress was worth a fortune, adorned with real diamonds. Why wouldnโ€™t the culprit simply keep it if it was about money?โ€

โ€œIf it was about lust, the murderer would have destroyed the bloodstained dress, not tossed it in the water. Besides, who goes to the trouble of removing a dress from the victim and making the body vanish? It doesnโ€™t add up.โ€

โ€œExactly,โ€ Chase said, a spark of understanding in his eyes. โ€œDid you find any other clues at the scene? Personal itemsโ€”a phone, shoes, socks? Or perhaps the murder weapon, any bloodstains?โ€

โ€œNothing yet.โ€

Nicole speculated, โ€œI think my sister deliberately removed her wedding dress, stabbed it, smeared some of her own blood on it, and threw it in the water to create drama.โ€

My mother chimed in, โ€œMy daughter is out of line. Pulling stunts to get attention is one thing, but involving the police is too much.โ€ The Kennedy family had arrived after a call from the police and overheard the conversation. From that moment, my parents and brother maintained a consistent narrative.

Officer Robert interrupted, โ€œPlease, maโ€™am, calm down.โ€

โ€œCalm down? Officer, you likely have a family. If your cherished daughter became an ungrateful brat and hurt her siblings, could you remain calm?โ€

My older brother glanced at his watch. โ€œOfficer, weโ€™re busy people. Weโ€™re here to tell you not to involve us in petty squabbles again.โ€

A knot of pain tightened in my chest. I stared at my family, who had loved me for years. Why did they feel like strangers now? What had I done to make them hate me so much?

The officers were taken aback. One asked, โ€œSheโ€™s your family. Sheโ€™s missing. Maybe she committed suicide, or worse, been murdered. Arenโ€™t you even a little worried?โ€

โ€œI know my daughter. Sheโ€™s too shameless to commit suicide. Plus, sheโ€™s Mrs. Reyes. Who would dare touch her? Donโ€™t waste your resources. Sheโ€™s probably hiding somewhere, watching us.โ€

โ€œI have a meeting. Iโ€™m leaving.โ€

The Kennedy family departed hastily. I even heard my mother mutter, โ€œSeriously, I didnโ€™t even finish my manicure, and Iโ€™m dragged here for this nonsense.โ€

โ€œMom, where did you get your nails done? They look fabulous,โ€ Nicole chimed in.

โ€œIโ€™ll take you later, and weโ€™ll get some beauty treatments too. If only your sister were as well-behaved as you, I wouldnโ€™t have these extra wrinkles.โ€

Soon, everyone had left except Chase, who hadnโ€™t spoken.

โ€œMr. Reyes, did your wife contact you before she vanished? We heard you left the wedding yesterday, and she was devastated. Thereโ€™s a chance she might have done something drastic. If you know anything, please cooperateโ€ฆโ€

Chaseโ€™s temper flared at the officerโ€™s implication. He slammed his hand on the table and stood. โ€œOfficer Robert, you havenโ€™t found a body or a crime scene. How can you be so sure sheโ€™s dead?โ€

โ€œSheโ€™s your wife!โ€

Fed up, Chase stormed out. โ€œThen you can investigate once you actually find a body!โ€
