Chapter 439: Donโt Leave Me This Time
I felt uneasy, watching as the Cullinan suddenly swerved and blocked the last car. Unfortunately, that car crashed directly into the driverโs side. A deafening crash echoed through the phone.
โDonโt, Harlan!โ Zoeyโs voice cracked. Even when facing death, she could remain calm. She had made peace with it the day our fate had been spoiled. She had said many times, โLive each day well.โ She wasnโt afraid of death. But at this moment, she was afraid Harlan would die!
โHarlan, are you okay? Say something!โ
โI wonโt bring up the divorce again. Donโt die, okay?โ
โThereโs just one more intersection. Youโฆโ
Before Zoey could finish, another car suddenly rushed at us from the opposite side of the green belt without warning. No matter how much I turned the steering wheel or pressed the gas pedal, it was useless.
โChloe!โ
Boom! All I could hear were the sounds of the collision and glass shattering. I saw shards flying toward my face as the airbags deployed. A blinding white light filled my vision, and with the intense impact, I felt my consciousness slipping away little by little.
No. I looked toward Whitney; she was trapped in the airbag. I tried desperately to grab her hand. She weakly called my name, โChloeโฆโ I wanted to speak, but no sound came out. Whitney, Zoey, are you okay?
Smack! Zoeyโs phone flew out and landed in front of me. My body was engulfed by the airbag, and I couldnโt see her current condition at all. The car had been shoved into a large tree by the roadside.
I felt so tired, so desperate to close my eyes and rest. But I was afraid that if I fell asleep, I would become a spirit or, worse, lose my soul entirely. No, I didnโt want to return to that hopeless, restless state where I called for help but the heavens didnโt answer.
I still havenโt had a baby with Carter, I havenโt seen him for the last time, and I havenโt seen my sister get married. Mom hasnโt given birth yet. I promised her Iโd stay with her through the delivery. I havenโt seen the sunrise with Zoey yet. Oh, right, the cat in Snowville must have grown up by now. Itโs still at home, waiting for me to return. I havenโt had my revenge yet. Iโm not willing to accept it! I really canโt accept it!
It felt as though warm liquid was falling from my eyes, but it was blood, red tears. Whitney mustered all her strength to grasp one of my fingers. I exhausted every ounce of effort to move my lips, whispering, โIโmโฆ sorry.โ She shook her head. โChloe, I donโt blame you.โ
โWherever you go, this time, donโt leave me behind.โ
โOkay.โ
I wanted to smile, but I was afraid it would scare her. I must look terrible right now, my face covered in blood.
โZoโฆ Zoeyโฆโ No one responded to me. My nose tingled, and my tears flowed even more heavily.
At that moment, the car that had crashed into us reversed, and someone opened the driverโs side door. Several tall men in black clothing, wearing hats and masks, appeared. The leader glanced at the situation inside the car. โTheyโre still alive. Take them.โ
Alive? Zoeyโs okay? Thatโs great. We could only let them carry us away because we had lost all of our resources and strength. I saw Harlan struggling to get out of the passenger seat. I didnโt know where he was injured, but he was completely unaware, staggering, red in blood.
โLetโlet her go!โ I didnโt know if he heard his plea or if Zoey had no further use for them, but they really did discard her, tossing her to the side of the green belt. Though his movements were rough, I still breathed a sigh of relief. Thank goodness! Thankfully, Zoey has escaped the torment. These people were indeed after us. Zoey didnโt speak, probably stunned from the impact.
Before I was taken into the car, I saw Harlan stumbling and falling to the ground, crawling toward Zoey, disregarding his bloodied and disheveled state, inching forward like a desperate animal. He was the proud son of heaven, yet in this moment, he resembled a dog, crawling forward in utter disarray.
โJanice, you have to live!โ Even a few passersby were frozen in shock. The series of crashes, the mysterious black-clad menโno one dared to help or call the police. The car door shut, and I lost all consciousness. Zoey, you must survive! Carl, Iโm sorryโฆ
