Chapter 437: Thrilling! Street Racing

At that moment, I became the center of attention. While everyone else waited quietly for the red light, I slammed the gas pedal and sped through, making a sharp turn. I finally understood why Wisteria had appearedโ€”someone had used her as part of a scheme to keep Carter and Taylor preoccupied. We were the real targets. What a cruel and calculated plan! Since they had replaced Taylorโ€™s men, it was clear this was orchestrated by someone from the Carlyns. They had used Taylorโ€™s wedding as bait to try and wipe out the Sanders in one fell swoopโ€”including Whitney and me.

The dozen or so cars behind us ran the red light as well. Thankfully, another lane of cars was passing through legally, and a large truck moving straight ahead blocked several of the pursuers. Still, four cars continued to tail us closely, and it wouldnโ€™t take long for the others to catch up. Time was running out. After killing someone, calling the police would only complicate mattersโ€”we couldnโ€™t risk it.

I steadied my voice and said, โ€œWhitney, my phoneโ€™s on the backseat. Call Taylor right now, tell him whatโ€™s happening, and ask where we should go!โ€

โ€œGot it.โ€

Whitney quickly grabbed the phone and dialed. On the other end, Taylor sounded busy as well, with the wind howling in the background.

โ€œAnna, are you okay?โ€ His concern was unmistakable.

Compared to Taylorโ€™s panic and urgency, Whitney remained surprisingly calm. She briefly explained what had happened and asked which direction we should head.

โ€œHead west! Donโ€™t go to the Whites! Iโ€™m sorry, Anna, the situation is out of control.โ€

Taylor continued anxiously, โ€œMy menโ€ฆ Theyโ€™ve all turned against me. Itโ€™s himโ€”heโ€™s back! Anna, head west and escape. Iโ€™llโ€ฆโ€

Bang! A gunshot rang out.

Where was Taylor? What had happened to him? And what about Carter? Was he in danger too?

โ€œTaylor, are you okay? What about Carterโ€”โ€ I started to ask, but Whitney interrupted, looking up at me, โ€œChloe, the call was disconnected.โ€

When I first realized we had gotten into the wrong car, I wasnโ€™t nervous. When I drove a blade into someoneโ€™s heart for the first time, I wasnโ€™t nervous either. But now, knowing that Carter and Taylor had been trapped and hearing the gunshot, I panicked. My hands trembled uncontrollably, and the fear I had buried deep inside surfaced. Carter was the person I cared about mostโ€”he couldnโ€™t be harmed. Without thinking, I raised my hand and slapped myself across the face.

โ€œChloe!โ€

โ€œIโ€™m fine. I just needed to focus. Call Carter!โ€

โ€œOh no! His phone isnโ€™t connecting.โ€

Through the rearview mirror, I saw two wedding cars speeding up, likely intending to box us in from both sides. This stretch of road wasnโ€™t particularly crowded, so I pushed down on the accelerator as well. The pursuers must have floored their gas pedals, aiming to take me down in one move. As they came alongside, closing in from both sides, I abruptly released the accelerator and stomped on the brake. The tires screeched violently against the asphalt.

โ€œFasten your seatbelts! Now!โ€

With a quick turn of the wheel, I sent the car into a drift, the front spinning around in an instant. The two cars flanking us were caught completely off guard. Their assumption was that Iโ€™d try to outpace them, so they were ready for a high-speed chase. But instead, I pulled this unexpected move. The two vehicles, unable to adjust in time, collided head-on, the crash echoing loudly. The large truck that had separated some of the pursuers earlier was still holding up the rest of the convoy, leaving just two cars chasing us now.

I turned the car around and charged straight toward them, head-on. Zoeyโ€™s face turned pale as she gripped her seatbelt tightly. โ€œChloe, am I going to meet Great-grandma now?โ€

As the two cars closed in, I deftly controlled the wheel and veered just enough to skim past one of the wedding cars, knocking off its side mirror.

The drivers of the trailing cars were utterly stunned. Moments ago, theyโ€™d heard the sound of the collision up ahead, and now, a luxury car was hurtling straight toward them. I could almost hear the driver of the white car in front of me screaming inwardly, โ€œDonโ€™t come any closer!โ€

I definitely couldnโ€™t go straight through. Besides these four cars, there were still twelve more trailing behind us. So I veered away from the white car, and then the car behind it surprisingly slowed down in sync, creating some space between us. I quickly spun the wheel and turned the car around. Not far ahead, a guy popped his head out of the window, giving a thumbs-up and shouting, โ€œAwesome!โ€

Zoey slammed her head back into the seat. โ€œGreat-grandma, sorry, I might be lateโ€ฆโ€ She pulled out her phone, ready to call Harlan. After all, Bill wasnโ€™t in Jaford. She knew that if she called him now, heโ€™d be anxious. But more importantly, if Mom heard the news, what if it caused an early birth? The only person she could rely on now was Harlan.

The phone rang, and Harlanโ€™s voice came through, โ€œHow are you? Are you okay?โ€

โ€œWhere are you?โ€

โ€œIโ€™ve been following you this whole time. Look behind you!โ€

Chloe was on speakerphone, so I could clearly hear Harlanโ€™s voice. I glanced into the rearview mirror and saw a Kia Carens aggressively weaving through the wedding cars, trying to break free of the chase. It seemed like Zoey had a habit of disappearing unexpectedly, and now Harlan had turned into her shadow. I had no idea when he had caught up with us. I never imagined heโ€™d be the one to turn the situation around.

Zoey spotted the Kia Carens weaving through the black cars and shouted, โ€œHey, your driving skills are impressive!โ€

โ€œSh*t! What the hell are you doing?โ€ Harlan was absolutely furious, cursing nonstop.

โ€œIn short, every wedding car is our enemy. If we get caught, itโ€™s pretty much a dead end.โ€

โ€œIdiot, just wait for me!โ€ Harlanโ€™s words, though brief, were a surprisingly comforting reassurance at that moment.

I forced myself to concentrate. We had taken out two of the cars, but there were still two more. Their speed had slowed, and with other cars between us, it was clear they were trying to form an encirclement with the others behind us.

Zoey frowned. โ€œHow about we stop and just run?โ€

Whitneyโ€™s face was cold. โ€œNo, those people are covered in blood. Weโ€™re at least safe in the car for now. Itโ€™s likely their mission is to kill us. If we get out, theyโ€™ll turn us into Swiss cheese. To them, laws donโ€™t exist.โ€

โ€œRight, we canโ€™t get out!โ€

Harlanโ€™s voice came through again, โ€œIโ€™ve already called backup. Keep going straight. Just hold out for three more intersections. My people will be there soon.โ€

Zoey let out a relieved sigh. โ€œI didnโ€™t expect you to actually be reliable.โ€

โ€œOf course, how else could I be your man?โ€ Even in a life-and-death situation, he still found time to be smug. But I didnโ€™t feel even a little joy. What was happening with Carter?

Just three intersections. Thatโ€™s only three to five minutes away. I can make it! I focused all my energy, determined not to let any distractions cloud my mindโ€ฆ.

Bang! In a split second, a massive truck barreled toward us, smashing through the green belt without warning. Harlanโ€™s voice, raw and anguished, tore through the phone, โ€œJanice!โ€

โ€œGreat-grandma is calling for me,โ€ Zoey said calmly, her voice steady.

At that moment, my adrenaline surged to the point of almost exploding! I slammed the accelerator to the floor, barely managing to dodge the truckโ€™s oncoming front. Just as I escaped, the car behind me wasnโ€™t as lucky. The deafening crash of metal on metal echoed through the air as multiple cars collided in a violent pile-up.

Zoeyโ€™s voice rang out, โ€œHarlan, are you okay?โ€ But all she was met with was an eerie, suffocating silence.
