Chapter 41
After slicing the cake, everyone settled down to eat. Grandma, however, excused herself, saying she wasn't feeling well, and returned to her room.
I resumed reading my book. From the doorway, I overheard Grandma's voice. โMarian, could you have someone discreetly check on whatโs happening in Cloudville? I have a bad feeling about this.โ
โAre you sure the person in that video isnโt Amanda?โ Marian asked hesitantly.
Grandma shot Marian a look. โIโve watched Amanda grow up. I know her better than anyone. If she wanted out of her marriage with Chase, she would have handled it properly. She wouldnโt do something like this while still married.โ
โTrue,โ I added. โAmandaโs turned down so many admirers over the years. Sheโs always been level-headed. She wouldnโt ruin her reputation to get back at Mr. Reyes.โ
Grandma gritted her teeth. โEven an old lady like me can see that trust is the cornerstone of a marriage. If Chase canโt even trust her, whatโs the point?โ
My eyes stung with tears as I listened from the shadows. Grandmaโs words cut deeply. Things so clear to her were lost on those whoโd grown up alongside me.
โAnyway,โ Grandma continued, โhave someone discreetly look into what Amandaโs up to in Cloudville.โ
โAlright, maโam. You should freshen up and get some rest. Perhaps Amanda will be back tomorrow.โ
โThat would be nice,โ Grandma sighed, heading to the bathroom.
By ten oโclock, Grandma had taken her medicine but kept glancing at the leftover cake, a habit sheโd repeated countless times that evening.
โMaโam, you should try to sleep.โ
โItโs not midnight yet. Iโm waiting for Amanda.โ
Mentioning my name brought a gentle sparkle to her eyes. โThat girl has loved sweets since she was little, and Iโve always indulged her. I even learned to bake just for her. Sheโs a sweetheart and always came by to cook for me when my legs started to give out.โ
โSheโd say, โI watched her grow up, and sheโll watch me grow old,โโ Grandmaโs laughter turned to tears. โMarian, Amanda always cared for me. Sheโll come back. Iโm just terrifiedโฆ terrified somethingโs happened to her.โ
โOh, come on, maโam. Amandaโs all grown up now. What could possibly happen? And with news traveling so fast, weโd know if anything was wrong.โ
Marian patted Grandmaโs shoulder comfortingly. โDonโt worry. Amandaโs probably just upset with Mr. Reyes. You know how women can be when they play hard to get. Sheโs not answering calls to prevent Mr. Reyes from reaching her through us. Sheโs just giving him the silent treatment. Didnโt she even get you an amulet for protection? Sheโs always thinking of you.โ
Grandma wiped her tears. โRight, Amanda wouldnโt just vanish. That fool Chase needs a good lesson.โ
โExactly. Donโt cry yourself to exhaustion. Amanda would be heartbroken if you did.โ
Grandma gave the cake one last look. โIf she comes back, make sure she eats the cake. I saved it just for her.โ
โAbsolutely. You rest now. Iโll keep an eye out, and if Amanda returns, youโll be the first to know.โ
Listening to their conversation, I reached for the cake, yearning for even a taste. Fulfilling Grandmaโs wish was all I wanted. My fingers passed right through it, and I screamed in frustration, unheard.
Why did I have to be the one to die? It wasnโt fair! Why do the good die young while the wicked seem to live forever?
