Chapter 41

After slicing the cake, everyone settled down to eat. Grandma, however, excused herself, saying she wasn't feeling well, and returned to her room.

I resumed reading my book. From the doorway, I overheard Grandma's voice. โ€œMarian, could you have someone discreetly check on whatโ€™s happening in Cloudville? I have a bad feeling about this.โ€

โ€œAre you sure the person in that video isnโ€™t Amanda?โ€ Marian asked hesitantly.

Grandma shot Marian a look. โ€œIโ€™ve watched Amanda grow up. I know her better than anyone. If she wanted out of her marriage with Chase, she would have handled it properly. She wouldnโ€™t do something like this while still married.โ€

โ€œTrue,โ€ I added. โ€œAmandaโ€™s turned down so many admirers over the years. Sheโ€™s always been level-headed. She wouldnโ€™t ruin her reputation to get back at Mr. Reyes.โ€

Grandma gritted her teeth. โ€œEven an old lady like me can see that trust is the cornerstone of a marriage. If Chase canโ€™t even trust her, whatโ€™s the point?โ€

My eyes stung with tears as I listened from the shadows. Grandmaโ€™s words cut deeply. Things so clear to her were lost on those whoโ€™d grown up alongside me.

โ€œAnyway,โ€ Grandma continued, โ€œhave someone discreetly look into what Amandaโ€™s up to in Cloudville.โ€

โ€œAlright, maโ€™am. You should freshen up and get some rest. Perhaps Amanda will be back tomorrow.โ€

โ€œThat would be nice,โ€ Grandma sighed, heading to the bathroom.

By ten oโ€™clock, Grandma had taken her medicine but kept glancing at the leftover cake, a habit sheโ€™d repeated countless times that evening.

โ€œMaโ€™am, you should try to sleep.โ€

โ€œItโ€™s not midnight yet. Iโ€™m waiting for Amanda.โ€

Mentioning my name brought a gentle sparkle to her eyes. โ€œThat girl has loved sweets since she was little, and Iโ€™ve always indulged her. I even learned to bake just for her. Sheโ€™s a sweetheart and always came by to cook for me when my legs started to give out.โ€

โ€œSheโ€™d say, โ€˜I watched her grow up, and sheโ€™ll watch me grow old,โ€™โ€ Grandmaโ€™s laughter turned to tears. โ€œMarian, Amanda always cared for me. Sheโ€™ll come back. Iโ€™m just terrifiedโ€ฆ terrified somethingโ€™s happened to her.โ€

โ€œOh, come on, maโ€™am. Amandaโ€™s all grown up now. What could possibly happen? And with news traveling so fast, weโ€™d know if anything was wrong.โ€

Marian patted Grandmaโ€™s shoulder comfortingly. โ€œDonโ€™t worry. Amandaโ€™s probably just upset with Mr. Reyes. You know how women can be when they play hard to get. Sheโ€™s not answering calls to prevent Mr. Reyes from reaching her through us. Sheโ€™s just giving him the silent treatment. Didnโ€™t she even get you an amulet for protection? Sheโ€™s always thinking of you.โ€

Grandma wiped her tears. โ€œRight, Amanda wouldnโ€™t just vanish. That fool Chase needs a good lesson.โ€

โ€œExactly. Donโ€™t cry yourself to exhaustion. Amanda would be heartbroken if you did.โ€

Grandma gave the cake one last look. โ€œIf she comes back, make sure she eats the cake. I saved it just for her.โ€

โ€œAbsolutely. You rest now. Iโ€™ll keep an eye out, and if Amanda returns, youโ€™ll be the first to know.โ€

Listening to their conversation, I reached for the cake, yearning for even a taste. Fulfilling Grandmaโ€™s wish was all I wanted. My fingers passed right through it, and I screamed in frustration, unheard.

Why did I have to be the one to die? It wasnโ€™t fair! Why do the good die young while the wicked seem to live forever?
