Chapter 284: The Police Found Silas
Carter and I were still speculating on how our enemy would handle Silasโs body, even preparing to lure them out. We never expected them to turn the tables and report to the police. If Silas was truly dead, the Boltons were in serious trouble, facing both a lawsuit and a mountain of problems. If he was alive, the police would soon find out. The people behind this had truly dark intentions.
The policeโs arrival surprised everyone. Adam rushed back, and upon seeing the police surrounding him, shouted, โWhat is going on? Why are the police here at my house!โ
โMr. Bolton,โ one officer replied, โyour maid has reported a body on the estate. Weโve come to investigate.โ
Adam, completely stunned, stammered, โA body? My estate has a body? Who called the police? I sure you have the right place? Where would theโฆโ
The commotion alerted Jeffrey, who had been resting, to come downstairs. The police had sealed off all exitsโno one could leave, only enter.
The maid who stepped forward was Linda Snider, the one who had drugged Silas. I had always held her in high regard. Daisy, though loud, was harmless. Linda, on the other hand, was more reserved and seemed efficientโshe had always appeared honest. No one had expected her to do something like this. When she raised her hand to admit it, all eyes turned to her.
Daisy, still confused, looked at Linda and asked, โLinda, what body are you talking about? Are you crazy?โ
Jeffreyโs sharp gaze shot toward Linda, and he said, โIโm curious too. When did my house hide a body?โ
An officer asked, โSince youโre the one who called the police, why donโt you tell us where you found the body? Who is it?โ
Linda, trembling under everyoneโs gaze, spoke with a shaking voice. โOfficer, I havenโt seen the body, but I suspect someone was murdered here!โ
โTell me. Why do you suspect that?โ the officer asked.
โYesterday, I noticed many bodyguards standing outside the small shed in the backyard. Iโve worked at the estate for years and have never seen anything like it. People were also carrying food from the kitchen to the shed. I thought maybe someone inside couldnโt move freely,โ she explained.
Adamโs face turned red with anger. He snapped, โYou ungrateful snake! Iโve treated you well, and this is how you repay me? Making up such ridiculous lies to slander my family? I, as the family head, didnโt even know there was anyone back there, but you, a mere maid, knew all along?โ
Despite the seriousness of the moment, Adamโs words sounded somewhat comical. His position as family head was questionable, at best. After all, not only did he not know about the person in the backyard, but he hadnโt even realized that his own son had been swapped for years. So it was no surprise he didnโt know what was going on in the backyard.
Nelson gestured to calm Adam down. He said, โMr. Bolton, please, let her continue. Since you didnโt see a body, how can you be so sure someone is dead?โ
Linda, still trembling, added, โThis afternoon, I saw Mr. Carterโs assistant going in and out of the small shed. They were carrying cleaning suppliesโฆand a large body bag. I was terrified. I feared someone in the Boltons had taken a life, so I quickly called the police.โ
Linda recounted what she had seen, and Nelson turned to Carter. โMr. Carter, would you like to explain yourself?โ
Carter remained indifferent, unconcerned by Lindaโs accusations. He calmly replied, โLike Adam, I have no idea about anybody.โ
โWell then, please lead us to the shed so we can take a look for ourselves.โ
Linda eagerly responded, โThis way.โ It seemed that she had been keeping an eye on the shed, waiting for Silas to be moved so she could report it to the police before anything could be hidden.
The group headed to the backyardโs small shed, where bodyguards remained at the door. Adam began to panic. He hadnโt expected bodyguards guarding the backyard. Could Linda be telling the truth? What had Carter been up to in the house?
Nelson turned to Carter and asked, โMr. Carter, would you mind if we checked inside?โ
โGo ahead,โ Carter replied, his eyes still calm, making Adam even more uncertain.
Adam gave Carter several pointed glances, his eyes nearly twitching with strain. Carter pretended not to notice, not even acknowledging him with a glance. Then, he turned to me, trying to catch my eye for some hint.
I raised my gaze and asked, โAdam, are your eyes cramping? I know an old doctor whoโs great at treating things like that. He specializes in facial spasm and Bellโs palsy.โ
Adam was furious. โYou might as well let Carter take a look, in case you canโt bear children.โ Clearly, he was really upsetโwhat a childish curse to throw!
Sheila wasnโt home; she had gone to get her nails done. No one could tell if she was avoiding the situation on purpose or if it was just a coincidence. Jeffreyโs face was stern, with a hint of anger creeping through. Luke was nervous. After all, he didnโt fully understand what was happening.
The bodyguards took the order and slowly opened the door. Carter glanced at Linda. โGo inside and see if you find the body youโre talking about.โ
Linda couldnโt look Carter in the eye, quickly lowering her head as she entered the shed. Nelson and the others followed closely behind.
Luke whispered nervously, โIf we find Silas, even if heโs not dead, weโll still be in trouble for detaining someone.โ
