Chapter 864
Megan’s heart skipped a beat. Something didn’t feel right. A wave of unease washed over her, especially when she saw the look on her cousin’s face–it made her nervous. “What… what happened?” She glanced around anxiously, not sure what was going on, so she quietly repeated the question. Aurora shot her a look, signaling her to stop asking. The man’s mood was clearly off, and if she kept pushing, who knew what might happen next? Leonard sensed something was off too.
Everything had seemed fine–why had it suddenly turned tense? Lucas let out a cold snort. “Megan, didn’t I ask you to come and look after her?” Megan looked around awkwardly, clearly flustered. “I did! I came to take care of her.” She absolutely remembered her job. She’d gotten up extra early today, went to the restaurant and picked up a meal freshly made by the head chef just for Aurora. As soon as she got it, she rushed straight over. Was that not enough? Megan honestly didn’t get it. But for some reason, even though she couldn’t figure out what she’d done wrong, meeting Lucas‘ eyes still made her feel guilty. She didn’t even know what she was guilty about. Leonard couldn’t help but speak up for her. “What’s your problem? “If something happened, can’t you just talk it out? Meggie really did get up early to bring Aurora food. “She’s been taking care of her all day–she hasn’t missed a single thing.” The more he said it, the more he started to feel upset on her behalf. She’d been the one who had done the most. And ever since Aurora got hurt, she hadn’t been okay at all. She’d even cried herself to sleep night after night. In the past few days spent with Megan, Leonard had seen it all clearly. That was exactly why, facing Lucas‘ accusation, he felt it was completely unfair. At the very least, that remark shouldn’t have been directed at Megan. But those words only fueled Lucas‘ anger further.
Supporting Aurora, he barked coldly, “Your idea of taking care of someone is sitting in there eating while she comes out alone and nearly falls? This is how you treat a patient?” Lucas‘ eyes, sharp as a hawk’s, swept back and forth between Megan and Leonard. Then he added with clear disdain, “And ‘Meggie,‘ huh? Real affectionate, aren’t you?” Leonard’s face stiffened. He had no idea why Lucas had suddenly taken it there. And in front of Aurora, no less. It made him uncomfortable. For a moment, Leonard stood there speechless, unsure how to respond. He just froze. Lucas cast him a sideways glance–this kind of man, he really didn’t even know what to say. Just from these two exchanges, he already saw through him. Someone like that, competing with him? The thought alone was laughable. Everything Leonard had said earlier–clearly just empty talk, the kind meant to be forgotten as soon as it was spoken. Lucas found it ridiculous. This was the guy he’d once considered a rival? Meanwhile, Megan was just as stunned. She turned to Aurora, confused, the question right at the tip of her tongue. But in that moment, all she could focus on was the one phrase: that she had almost fallen.
