Hector flinched under the lead officerโs sudden tone. He quickly took two steps back and bowed.
โThatโs impossible, sir. Youโll always be my lead officer in my heart. Iโd never forget what youโve done for me. Even if you gave me ten lives, Iโd never dare do something like that.โ
The lead officer finally seemed to relax, patting Hector on the shoulder.
โAlright, alright. I was just messing with you,โ he laughed heartily. โLook at you, looking so stiff. Why take it so seriously?โ
But that smile never reached his eyes, and Hector apparently noticed it.
Still, he remained respectful and humble, saying nothing more. He knew that in moments like this, saying too much could only lead to trouble. And he was well aware of what kind of man the lead officer truly was. That was why he stayed so cautious and deferential. These were the things the newer officers hadnโt figured out yet.
Hector reassured him again. โSir, I truly had no hidden intentions. I just happened to be assigned to this case.โ
The lead officer considered it for a moment and realized that it had all been coincidence.
โAlright, then. Go on with your work.โ Then he asked, โWhat do you think of the new trainee?โ
Hector looked up in surprise, not expecting that question. Had he noticed something? He gave a diplomatic answer. โHeโs earnest and hardworking. The kidโs got drive. With some time, he could become a fine officer.โ
The lead officer paused, clearly unimpressed by the canned response, then waved him off. Hector gave a slight nod and turned to leave. Who knew what else might unfold if he stayed any longer.
Something was definitely off about the lead officer today. As he watched Hectorโs figure disappear down the hallway, a sharp glint flashed in his eyes. He hadnโt missed the look on Hectorโs face earlier when he stood by the window. And right below was the trainee and Tessa. The lead officer had noticed it all. Seeing Hectorโs expression, it immediately struck him โ maybe the kid had feelings for her.
Or maybe it was something he couldnโt have and now the trainee had stepped in. The more he thought about it, the more convinced he became that Hector had a thing for Tessa. After all, what man could resist that innocent and gentle type? And if someone claimed they could, the lead officer would never truly believe it, unless, of course, the man was incapable of sex. But people like that were few and far between. So, in his mind, there was no doubt that Hector had feelings for Tessa. Maybe he was wrong, but either way, he planned to keep a close eye on him.
The moment Hector showed any misstep, heโd be the first to know, and when that happened, it would save him the trouble of dealing with things later. Heโd use it to take Hector down. Of course, he hadnโt told anyone about these thoughts. He wouldnโt let any surprises ruin his plans. His hand clenched slightly at his side. That was how people were in the real world. As long as their own interests werenโt involved, everything was fine. But the moment something touched their own turf, the weighing of pros and cons began. It was the same for everyone.
Meanwhile, once Hector was out of the lead officerโs sight, he finally let out a quiet breath of relief.
