Chapter 623

It wasnโ€™t fair to blame Jason and his team for not figuring out the cause of her coma. After all, no ordinary person would ever think to connect her condition to that drug. It had been banned for years, completely removed from circulation, and it was far too cruel to even imagine being used on a living person. Unless there was an intense personal grudge involved, Jason wouldnโ€™t have even considered it. So naturally, neither he nor his team had factored it into their research.

That miscalculation had thrown off their entire approach, and progress had stalled from the start. As Lucasโ€™ expression grew darker by the day, Jasonโ€™s frustration mounted. He didnโ€™t even dare sit near Lucas at mealtimes anymore, afraid the manโ€™s simmering anger might suddenly be redirected at him. He avoided direct eye contact but never slacked on his work. Every day, he buried himself in Auroraโ€™s data, trying to find some breakthrough. So even if Lucas wanted to lash out, there was no real excuse to do so. All the pressure came from Lucasโ€™ presence alone โ€“ his sharp gaze and silent fury. Jason had lost track of how many hairs heโ€™d shed in the past few days. And yet, despite all the effort, there had been no real progress. The lack of answers was eating at him. How, after all this time, had they still not figured it out? Jason was beginning to regret agreeing to let Lucas bring Aurora overseas. But the decision had already been made, and there was no undoing it now. He had to deal with the consequences of the choice heโ€™d made. Inside the hospital room, Lucas sat by Auroraโ€™s side, still keeping vigil, when he suddenly heard a knock on the door and a familiar voice outside. โ€œIs this the right place?โ€

A manโ€™s voice replied, โ€œIf you donโ€™t know, then I definitely donโ€™t.โ€ Lucasโ€™ gaze sharpened. They had actually followed her all the way here. What nerve. Clearly, theyโ€™d taken his warning as nothing more than background noise. The thought alone made Lucasโ€™ irritation spike. All the anger heโ€™d been holding in these past few days suddenly found a perfect outlet. Outside, Megan scratched her head. โ€œWell, I guess youโ€™re right. If you donโ€™t know, thereโ€™s no way you would.โ€

Leonard couldnโ€™t help but laugh at how clueless she looked. He honestly didnโ€™t even know what to say. After all this time โ€“ after the flight and now arriving at the hospital โ€“ her mind still seemed completely foggy. Had she really not caught on to what was going on yet? As Lucas opened the door, the two were still exchanging quips just outside. Megan had prepared a whole speech in her head, but the moment she saw Lucasโ€™ stone-cold expression, her mind went blank. Why was he looking like that? He appeared like someone whoโ€™d been through hell. One glance at Lucasโ€™ grim expression and all her prepared lines vanished. โ€œLuโ€ฆ Lucas,โ€ she stammered. Leonard raised an eyebrow. โ€œYou know him? Are you two related?โ€ Leonard asked, pointing at Lucas in shock. Megan nodded quickly and shot Leonard a look, silently begging him to lower his hand before Lucas got mad. She knew exactly what kind of person her cousin was. After all these years, she knew him far too well. And it was precisely that familiarity that made her fear him from the bottom of her heart. When she was little, Lucas was scarier than her own parents. They even used him to scare her into eating when she was being picky.
