Only then did Aurora realize Lucas was right. If there really had been something wrong with the fondue, they would’ve noticed by now. It wasn’t like they were feeling any different. Besides, when something is added to a dish, it usually kicks in fast.

“You’re right,” she said, picking up her fork again.

Still, a strange thought lingered in the back of her mind. She and Wendy had never been especially close, so why was this meal filled with all her favorite dishes? Some of them were things even her own mother didn’t know she liked.

The fact that Wendy had managed to make them all surprised her. But then again, if Wendy was trying to apologize, she probably went out of her way to find out.

Lucas, meanwhile, kept eating without concern. After finishing, he even stood and offered to take care of the dishes.

“I’ll do the washing up. You go get ready for bed–take a shower and turn in early.” His voice dropped just a little at the end, the look in his eyes suggestive, his Adam’s apple shifting as he swallowed.

They were both adults. Of course, Aurora understood what he meant. Come to think of it, they’d been like a married couple for quite some time now. What was there to be shy about? After everything they’d been through, nothing was unfamiliar between them. Whatever issues they’d had, they’d long since laid them out in the open.

“Alright then, I’ll go shower,” she said casually. It wasn’t a yes or a no–nothing too direct–but Lucas’ eyes lit up in an instant. He understood perfectly. Not saying no was as good as saying yes.

Aurora stepped into the bedroom, and just as she was about to head for the shower, a message from Megan popped up on her phone.

“Aurora, how’s my godmother doing now?”

Aurora and Megan had always been close, and with Megan’s charming, silver tongue from a young age, Grace had eventually let her call her godmother. Their two families had always gotten along well. That was why the bond between Aurora and Megan had lasted all these years.

Seeing Megan’s message, Aurora didn’t want her to worry and replied right away, “Don’t worry, everything’s fine. I think my mom will be discharged pretty soon.”

The reply came quickly. “Huh? That fast? Why not stay a bit longer to recover properly?”

Aurora sighed. “You know how my mom is–she’s just not the kind of person who can sit still. Keeping her in the hospital any longer would feel like torture to her.”

Megan read the messages and found it totally believable. She knew just how strong-willed Grace was. So, when Aurora said she’d be discharged, Megan didn’t doubt it at all.

“If she’s getting discharged, won’t you be with her?” Megan sent another message, only just realizing something.

Based on what Aurora said, it sounded like she was only guessing.

Reading that, Aurora felt even more helpless. “You have no idea. My mom literally kicked both me and Lucas out. She wouldn’t let us stay and keep her company.”

Seeing the message, Megan felt a mix of helplessness and heartache for Grace. She was such a strong woman, always holding it together. That was exactly why Aurora admired and feared Grace deep down.

Megan let out a sigh and sent another message: “Alright then, let’s leave it at that. Once you’re free, the two of us can go visit her together.”
