Vespera lowered her head and took a few bites, laughing to herself. Was Jordan seriously trying to “bribe” Dominic with his secretary? How cheap and gross!
Clearly, Jordan had no idea that Dominic didn’t even like women. He would have had better luck sending over a few good-looking young men.
The image of Dominic picking out fresh-faced boys popped into her head, and she couldn't hold back a chuckle.
“Ms. Glidon, what’s so funny?” A cool, low voice drifted into her ears. His tone was akin to a teacher’s when catching a student passing notes in class. Dominic sighed and placed a piece of fried chicken on her plate. “Eat more meat. It’ll help your brain function.”
Vespera was rendered speechless. Crap. Could he read her mind?
Just as she was staring at him, startled, Luke and Austin returned. Austin had already talked Luke down outside, but the moment they stepped back into the room, Luke caught Vespera looking at Dominic with a soft gaze. In an instant, he was triggered again. He stormed across the room and planted himself between the two of them, cutting off their line of sight. Vespera could feel the craziness emanating from him. She even lifted herself slightly from her seat, already scanning the room for an escape route. But then, all of a sudden, Luke spun around to face Dominic instead.
Vespera was shocked. He wasn’t actually going to start a fight.
Everyone in the room held their breath. Dominic leaned back lightly, his posture elegant and composed. “Mr. Munoz, what now?” he asked.
Chapter 141
Luke lowered his head in silence. His hand slowly lifted.
“Luke, don’t be ridiculous!” Vespera blurted, reaching out to stop him. If he threw a punch now, word would spread that Dominic got hit because of her. And once that reached Tavian Group, she’d be the one getting scolded into the ground.
Luke’s hand froze mid-air. He turned to look at her, his eyes filled with grief that seemed ready to spill over. It was like his eyes were saying, “So now you only care about him, not me? You’ve become so heartless!”
Vespera looked at him, thinking, “Seriously? We’re already divorced. It’s been a day, and you already forgot? Are you suffering from Alzheimer’s?” Vespera responded with a mockingly sweet smile, as if to say, “Oh, you poor thing.”
The two of them exchanged silent looks. One was trying to elicit sympathy, while the other was long since hardened, immune to such tactics.
Luke turned back around. In the room charged with tension, where everyone was bracing to step in at any moment, he simply placed his hand on the table. Then, he spun the lazy Susan, picked up a bottle of liquor, and poured himself a glass.
Dominic narrowed his eyes.
“Mr. Reid, I admit I was lacking sincerity earlier. I’ll punish myself with three drinks,” Luke said as he raised the glass and downed it in one go. Then came the second. Then the third!…
Everyone was shocked. They had thought Luke would lash out. Instead, he was admitting his mistake.
Among the rich and powerful of Halewick, Luke was known for his pride. If it weren’t for business, the moment he saw Dominic showing up with his ex-wife, he would have grabbed him by the collar and punched him on the spot.
Austin, who had spent ten minutes calming him down beforehand, couldn’t help but be surprised. Luke actually listened? Just like that?
Just as everyone was thinking that even Luke had to bow down for the sake of business, they realized something wasn’t right. Luke said he would drink three glasses, but now he was on his seventh.
“That’s enough.”
“Mr. Munoz, you’re going overboard!”
“Someone take the bottle away already!”
The room erupted in anxious murmurs. Anyone who tried to grab the glass was either pushed aside or scared off by the look in his eyes.
