Chapter 131

Vespera froze. Her head felt light, almost dizzy. It took her a moment to process that Dominic’s apology was for the harsh words he had said when she first entered his bedroom. So, it turned out that Dominic wasn’t completely heartless after all. But she couldn’t help wondering about the meaning behind the rest of his words.

She went over his words again, analyzing each one carefully, and then she got it. He had been upset because she’d hesitated at the door. He was frustrated with her lack of decisiveness. As his secretary, she should have been more confident instead of overthinking things. With that in mind, his last two sentences made perfect sense.

He wasn’t just setting boundaries. He was making it clear—he would never let anything happen between them. There would be no rumors, no misunderstandings. A strange sense of guilt settled in her chest. She nodded seriously. “I understand. You’re right. The innocent have nothing to fear.”

Dominic was momentarily speechless. She understood. By the time Vespera returned to her apartment, her mood had improved. Dominic might be difficult to deal with, but at least he was willing to lower his guard and talk things through. That made it easier to avoid misunderstandings.

Later that night, half-asleep, she heard the sound of a text notification. She groggily reached for her phone and squinted at the screen. It was from Dominic. “Ms. Gildon, don’t forget to come to work tomorrow.” Vespera was utterly exhausted. In the darkness, she barely managed to crack her eyes open, struggling to type a reply. “Got it, Mr. Reld.”

She didn’t realize her fingers had slipped slightly—just enough for autocorrect to take over. She hit send without a second thought, swiped the chat away, tossed her phone aside, and drifted right back into sweet, peaceful sleep.

The next morning, at 7:30 am, Raymond had already prepared breakfast. Dominic had said he was going to Tavian Group today.

Under normal circumstances, Dominic would be up by 6:00 am for his morning routine. By 7:00 am, he would be at the dining table, reading financial news. After that, he would spend some time in the garden—making calls or taking video meetings before heading to the office at exactly 9:00 am. But since he was injured, his schedule had shifted.

It was already 8:00 am, and he still hadn’t come out of his room. Geard arrived and was surprised to hear that Dominic hadn’t gotten out of bed yet. “What happened last night? Did Mr. Reid finally learn how to hit the nightclub?” Of course, it was a joke. Even if Dominic were injured, his usual nightlife was so dull it could rival a priest’s.

Raynorad, with his hands clasped in front of him, sighed in confusion. “It’s strange. Mr. Reid never sleeps in.” Neither of them dared to knock on the bedroom door.

Finally, at 8:30 am, Dominic emerged from his bedroom. His pale, handsome face showed signs of fatigue, as if he hadn’t slept well, and there were dark circles under his eyes. Geard and Raymond exchanged a glance. They thought, “Could he have secretly gone to a nightclub after all?”

Dominic ignored them and walked toward the dining room. The two followed closely behind. Dominic sat down at the dining table to eat breakfast. Thinking Dominic was in a bad mood, Gerard didn’t dare bother him about the day’s schedule. Raymond silently attended to Dominic, serving him breakfast.

To their surprise, Dominic took a sip of juice, smiled, and said, “Today’s juice is really good.” The two of them were silent for a while. After all, juice was just juice. Perhaps the fruit had been exceptionally sweet that day. Dominic continued eating with a good appetite, as if in a much better mood.

Gerard felt that reporting his work at this moment would disturb Dominic while he was eating; just then, his phone rang. He glanced at the screen and muttered to himself, “Why is McGilden calling me so early?” He was about to step outside to take the call.

“Answer it here.” A cool voice came from behind him. “Huh? Alright.” Though confused, Gerard complied. He answered the phone. “Vespera…”
