Chapter 695

Cecilia wasnโ€™t really feeling guilty because of Tylerโ€™s questionโ€“what rattled her was his eyes. It felt as if she looked into them for even a second longer, heโ€™d drag her straight into a pit.

She quickly looked away. Her heart nearly leaped out of her chest.

Rachel, seeing Ceciliaโ€™s state, feared she might slip up. She hurried forward to step between her and Tyler.

โ€œAlright, you should head home. I know today gave you quite a scare. Go rest, and weโ€™ll talk about this in a couple of days.โ€

Cecilia, looking dazed, nodded. โ€œOkay, Iโ€™ll just call a cab.โ€

Tyler tilted his head slightly, peering past Rachel at her. โ€œYou donโ€™t want us to give you a ride?โ€

The last thing Cecilia dared was to actually let Tyler drive herโ€“she couldnโ€™t handle the suffocating pressure that clung to him.

โ€œNo, really, itโ€™s fine,โ€ she waved quickly, terrified he might insist.

Rachel and Yale exchanged a look. No words were neededโ€“they both understood. For Tyler to suddenly offer something like that, it almost certainly meant suspicion had already crept into his mind. With his personality, heโ€™d never otherwise suggest giving Cecilia a ride.

Rachel could only hope Tyler wouldnโ€™t dwell on it further, or that Cecilia hadnโ€™t revealed too much. Still, watching Cecilia shrink and tremble in front of Tyler left her feeling helpless. Couldnโ€™t Cecilia hold herself together a little? Tyler wasnโ€™t exactly about to eat her alive.

She had planned carefully for so many scenariosโ€“yet she hadnโ€™t accounted for Cecilia losing her composure the moment she laid eyes on Tyler.

Rachel helped her into the cab and, to stave off Tylerโ€™s doubts, added a reassuring line.

โ€œAs for your husbandโ€™s debts, weโ€™ll handle them. Donโ€™t worry too much. Just focus on taking care of yourself and the child.โ€

Cecilia was still trembling in fear when she looked at Rachel.

โ€œRachel, Iโ€™m so sorry. I only wanted to talk to you about my relationship, but instead I ran into my husbandโ€™s creditors and nearly dragged you into danger.โ€

Rachel gently patted the back of her hand. โ€œDonโ€™t overthink it. Go home and rest.โ€

โ€œOkay.โ€

The cab pulled away quickly.

Tyler narrowed his eyes at Rachel. She took a deep breath, forcing herself to stay calm before turning to him.

โ€œSorry for dragging you into this. I was just afraid we couldnโ€™t handle it ourselves.โ€

โ€œLetโ€™s go. Weโ€™ll talk back at the apartment.โ€

This time, Rachel returned with him. The air inside the car felt stifling, and neither of them spoke. Rachelโ€™s nerves gnawed at her.

She had always thought she had a steady temperament, but now, she found herself straining to keep it together. She considered starting some small talk but worried that with Tylerโ€“so sharp and calculatingโ€“every extra word might just expose her.

It was better to say nothing.

Back at the apartment, Tyler shrugged off his jacket. Rachel sat on the sofa, pretending to play with the dog, though her attention never left him.

Tyler must have sensed it. He suddenly turned around. Rachel looked away in a panic and gave Ray a few pats on the head.

โ€œRay, youโ€™ve been eating too much lately. I donโ€™t think I can let you keep this up.โ€

โ€œCome upstairs with me,โ€ Tyler suddenly said to her from behind.
