Chapter 261
Kimberlyโs gaze shifted between Reynaldo and me. She then feigned concern, saying, โMs. Duffy, donโt blame Reynaldo. I felt unwell getting off the plane, and he was worried, so he took me away first. Donโt be angry with him.โ
I laughed sarcastically. โMs. Palmer, how could you possibly think Iโd be angry with Mr. Humphrey? Iโm just a secretary; donโt misinterpret me.โ
Kimberly hesitated. Reynaldo had already approached during their conversation. He gave me a cold look and left. Kimberly hurried after him, calling, โReynaldoโฆโ
I stared at his retreating back in dismay. It was exhausting. He never treated me well, and was constantly angry. Even though heโd left me at the airport that morning without an apology, he always reacted this way. I was so tired; I felt like exploding.
Jonathan glanced at me, smiling ambiguously. โHonestly, were you twoโฆ doing something?โ
โWhat are you doing?โ I asked, bewildered.
Jonathan raised an eyebrow, chuckling mischievously. โAlone in a hotel roomโฆ what else could we be doing?โ
My face flushed crimson. Reynaldo often harbored inappropriate thoughts, a trait shared by his brothers. Things gather by category, and people tend to group accordingly.
โDid we interrupt something, explaining Reynaldo's grim expression?โ
I didn't want to speak to him, but Jonathan persisted. โIt must be; otherwise, why the delay in calling you to dinner? It's all Kimberly's fault. I said Iโd wait downstairs, but she insisted on coming up to knock on your door. Just look at Reynaldoโs frustrated expression. Tsk tskโฆโ
I rolled my eyes speechlessly. Who knew Reynaldo was so dissatisfied? My mind was full of inappropriate thoughts and fantasies, which was unbelievable. Yoripero was bitterly cold, like Freybourne in winter. I shivered as soon as I left the hotel. Heartbreakingly, I saw Reynaldo drape his coat over Kimberly.
Kimberly had changed from her dress into pants and a down jacket; theoretically, she shouldn't have been cold. Yet Reynaldo still fussed over her, worried she might catch a cold. My heart claimed indifference, but that was a lie. I knew I had no right to care, or to be bothered. I hung my head and walked silently towards the car.
Kimberlyโs considerate voice cut through the silence. โReynaldo, why not give this coat to Ms. Duffy? Look how lightly sheโs dressed; what if she gets sick?โ
I stopped, frowning at them. Reynaldo also looked at me. His dark, deep eyes were inscrutable.
I said lightly to Kimberly, โNo need, Iโm not cold. My constitution isnโt as delicate as yours; you keep it.โ
โIโm fine, Ms. Duffy. Reynaldo bought me a down jacket. Iโm not that cold. Youโre the one dressed lightly; what if you catch a cold?โ She then removed her coat and put it on me. โReynaldoโs coat is very warm; you should wear it.โ
