Chapter 254
I pursed my lips and obediently sat in my seat. โIt takes about three hours to fly to Yoripero, so you can rest,โ he said. I had just sat down when he seemed to anticipate my next thought. I responded softly, closed my eyes, and said no more.
Last night was a real ordeal. As soon as I lay down on the chair, I fell asleep. On the plane, I couldnโt sleep well; I kept dreaming. The dreams were strange. I dreamt that Reynaldo knew I was pregnant. He locked me in a dark attic, where I was forbidden to go anywhere or see anyone. I knocked on the door and smashed the window frantically, but couldn't escape. Then, in the blink of an eye, my baby was born. I hadn't even held my baby when Reynaldo took it away. I shouted and cried hoarsely, begging him to return the baby to me. But he ignored me, he and Kimberly each holding a baby, then they disappeared.
I was finally awakened, and when I woke up, tears streamed down my face. I didnโt have time to wipe them away because, at that moment, a terrible sense of oppression loomed before me. Reynaldo approached without my realizing when. Strong arms braced either side of my chair. His deep black eyes stared at me unblinkingly. No! He was staring at my stomach. My heart skipped a beat. Did Iโฆ did I just talk in my sleep? Itโs over, itโs over!
I propped myself up, squeezing into the chair, smiling at him in surprise and asking, โMr. Humphrey, whatโs wrong?โ
โWhat kind of dream did you have that made you so sad and cry?โ he asked. He raised his hand to gently wipe the tears from the corner of my eye. I pushed his hand away and nervously said, โJustโฆ just a nightmare.โ
โNightmare?โ
Reynaldo stared at me with his dark, piercing eyes, making my heart race. I lowered my head and forced myself to say calmly, โI dreamt of my family going bankrupt, everything changing, the good life gone forever.โ
I also dreamed of debt collectors coming to collect debts. They were so fierce, hitting and scolding us, and then I cried in fear.
โSo, youโre saying that it was me who was demanding payment, and you even dreamt that I took away your baby?โ he asked, chuckling softly, though his eyes held no hint of a smile.
I shuddered in fear and pretended to look at him in confusion. โWhatโฆ what do you mean?โ
โEsmeraldaโฆโ he sat up straight, smiling coldly, โYou are really full of lies; even a nightmare has to deceive me. Is it really that difficult for you to tell me the truth?โ
โIโฆ I really dreamt that my family went bankrupt, and then creditors came to collect debts,โ I said softly.
He snorted coldly, โThen why did you shout my name in that hateful tone in your dream? Even the words you said were filled with a desire to kill me.โ
โEsmeralda! Ms. Duffy, how much do you actually hate me deep down inside?โ
I nervously gripped the chair, not daring to say a word. At this point, the more I said, the more mistakes I made. After all, I didnโt even know what nonsense I was talking about.
He suddenly reached out and his fingertips landed on my flat stomach.
