Chapter 1332
She quickly pulled me to sit down with Reynaldo and warmly went to the kitchen to serve two bowls of hot soup for me and Reynaldo.
She said to Reynaldo with red eyes, โI know, thanks to you this time, Johnathan is safe and sound.โ
โReynaldo, I really donโt know how to thank you.โ
โMs. Valois, you are exaggerating. Actually, I didnโt do much. I guess those people had a change of heart, thatโs why they released Johnathan.โ
โHow is that possible?โ Gracie asked. โThose people were so aggressive and ruthless, how could they possibly have a change of heart?โ
When Gracie said this, Reynaldo suddenly looked at me inexplicably.
I knew that he was starting to doubt again. โMatthew let Johnathan off so easily because I made a deal with Matthew.โ
I flashed him a bright smile.
Reynaldo, however, turned his face away directly.
I thought, Does he not like it when I smile like this? Well, then I really have to smile like this more in front of him! In the futureโฆ
Thinking of this, my heart couldnโt help but skip a beat. His spirits were still good. He should have already known the good news that Vonnie was very likely to wake up.
โReynaldoโฆโ
Johnathan hurried over and gratefully said to Reynaldo, โThanks to you this time, otherwise I wouldnโt know when I would have been locked up.โ
Reynaldo shook his head lightly and said, โActually, I didnโt do anything.โ
Gracie laughed on the side and said, โReynaldo is always like this, never seeking credit.โ
โYes!โ Johnathan said, โIt must be because you killed their fierce Tibetan mastiff, that Matthew was afraid of you, so he fled Freybourne in the middle of the night.โ
โHumph! Let him run fast, otherwise weโll beat him to death!โ
Reynaldo didnโt say anything; he seemed to have a lot on his mind.
After a while, he suddenly asked Braylon, โWhat happened last night when Matthew and Moshe left Freybourne?โ
Braylon said seriously, โLast night, after you said the plan was canceled, I had someone keep an eye on Matthew. When Matthew and Moshe left Freybourne, there didnโt seem to be anything out of the ordinary, but I heard that their young lady seems to have come over, so I surmised that they were urgently called back by that young lady.โ
โWhy did he let Johnathan go?โ Reynaldo asked Braylon.
Just this one question caught Braylon off guard.
Johnathan looked confused, โWhat are you guys talking about? Isnโt it Matthew whoโs scared of Reynaldo?โ
Braylon didnโt say a word, and Reynaldo didnโt speak either.
The atmosphere in the living room suddenly became eerie.
I busily smiled and said, โOh, whatโs there to be confused about? Matthewโs main purpose was not to take your lives, but to seek revenge on Reynaldo and see him suffer. The retaliation was in full swing, and their young lady called him back again, so he must have thought, โAnyway, this revenge plan couldnโt be completed, so I might as well let Johnathan go.โ You guys should be more careful in the future, be wary of him coming back.โ
Braylon and Johnathan exchanged a glance, as if they both thought I made sense.
Only Reynaldo remained silent, but his dark gaze was fixed on me the whole time.
I was so nervous under his gaze that I couldnโt help but stand up and laugh, saying, โYou guys go ahead and guess, Iโm going up to see Vonnie, haha.โ
I breathed a sigh of relief only after I went upstairs.
Vonnie still lay quietly in bed, with a drip in the back of her hand. Her eyes tightly closed, her face pale as paper. Only the faint breath between her nostrils indicated that she was still alive.
Even though Anton said Vonnie might wake up, looking at Vonnie like this, I couldnโt help but feel sad in my heart.
I sat on the edge of the bed, took her hand, and whispered to her, โYou need to wake up soon, Iโm still waiting to see your wedding with Johnathan. And Yoripero, didnโt we agree with Gilbert to go to Yoripero to play with him? Without you, I donโt want to go alone. So, Vonnie, wake up soon, I really miss you.โ
I lowered my head, my cheek against the back of her hand, my eyes couldnโt help but heat up. I really wanted so much, so much, to hear her voice again.
On the way back, Reynaldo was surprisingly quiet.
I glanced at his profile. His profile was always tense, obviously preoccupied. I didnโt know how to dispel his suspicions and concerns; the more I said, the more mistakes I made, so I could only hang my head and remain silent.
While waiting for the traffic lights, he suddenly said to me, โEsmeralda, even though Matthew and his people have already left Freybourne and everything seems calm, why do I still feel very uneasy in my heart?โ
I was startled and looked up at him.
He looked at me deeply and said, โYou really didnโt lie to me?โ
I shook my head hastily, โNo.โ
Reynaldo looked at me for a while and then smiled, โI probably just overthought it.โ
Seeing him smile, I finally breathed a sigh of relief and said, โYouโre just overthinking it.โ
He reluctantly tugged at the corner of his lips and said, โOkay, I wonโt think about it anymore. As long as you and the children stay by my side, Iโm not afraid of anything.โ
I smiled at him and didnโt say anything. I didnโt know how to respond to his words.
In the following days, Reynaldo would take me out to play with the children every day. During this period, the two children were bored at home, but as soon as they went outside, they had a great time playing.
As New Yearโs Eve approached, Reynaldo took us to buy New Year goods. Originally, these things were supposed to be done by the servants, but he said, โPersonally taking me and the children to buy New Year goods, this New Year is warmer and more flavorful.โ
Essie and Roddy still had their pocket money and bought something mysteriously, saying it was a New Yearโs gift for me and Reynaldo on New Yearโs Eve. I asked them what it was, but they wouldnโt say.
The day before New Yearโs Eve came in the blink of an eye.
