Chapter 99: A Rivalry Ignited
Everyone watched to see how this rivalry would unfold. Fresh from abroad, Fraser had little regard for Havenbrookโs social niceties. He ignored the sycophants, his noble gaze barely acknowledging them. Spotting Trevor standing alone, he smirked contemptuously.
As the summit forum began, everyone took their seats. The organizers, lacking tact, had placed Trevor and Fraser together. A finance reporter, sensing a rare opportunity, raised his camera to capture the two powerful men side-by-side but quickly lowered it under their icy stares and slunk away.
Trevorโs voice was low and menacing. โTo humiliate me, Fraser, you went after my woman. Thatโs a low blow.โ
Fraser scoffed, his tone laced with mockery. โMr. Larson, youโre not worth the trouble.โ
Trevorโs veins bulged on the hand resting on the chair. โSummer isnโt a woman to be toyed with. Name your terms, otherwise, it wonโt look good for you, Mr. Graham, to be seen wearing my worn shoes.โ
Fraserโs eyes turned cold, his brows furrowing, a storm brewing in his gaze. โMr. Larson, comparing the woman who loved you for five years to a pair of shoes? Youโre truly scum.โ
Trevor hadnโt meant to say that, but the thought of Summer with Fraser drove him mad. โFraser, you donโt love her. If you want a woman to play with, Havenbrook has plenty. Why bother with her?โ
Fraser sneered. โSince when are you the expert on my feelings? How do you know I donโt love her?โ
Trevor was taken aback. He met Fraserโs enigmatic yet meaningful gaze, momentarily speechless. He didnโt even notice when the summit ended.
Fraser stood, adjusted his suit, and cast a disdainful glance at Trevor. โLet me remind you, Mr. Larson, Summer broke up with you. I donโt care about her past relationships. If you didnโt cherish her, someone else will.โ
Trevor, sharp as he was, couldnโt miss the clear affection in Fraserโs words. For the first time, fear crept into his heart; he might have truly lost something irreplaceable. But even if Fraser liked Summer, she couldnโt possibly love him back. Trevor was convinced their five-year relationship was too deep to be forgotten.
Summer spent a few days in the hospital, pampered like an invalid. Fraser even sent a seasoned maid to care for her. One might think sheโd suffered a grave illness.
Returning to her ward after a checkup, she saw a man in a white doctorโs coat standing at her door. Handsome and poised, Xavier gave her a subtle once-over before smiling. โHello, Iโm Xavier Hathaway.โ
Xavier had heard about Fraser carrying Summer into the hospital that night. It seemed the mighty Fraser had finally fallen. Summer didnโt recall meeting him. He continued, โIโm the head of this hospital andโฆ Fraserโs childhood friend.โ
Summer replied, โHello, Iโm Summer Stewart.โ
โDidnโt expect weโd have such a connection. Oh, I forgot to mention, I was at Westhaven too.โ
Xavier smiled. โNo need to be nervous. Fraser and I grew up together. Youโre the first woman to appear by his side.โ
Summer thought to herself, The first? Then who was the girl in the photo on Fraserโs desk?
Before she could ask, someone called out โDr. Xavierโ from afar. Xavier crouched slightly. โWell, Summer, letโs hang out sometime. Donโt tell him I came by.โ
As he turned to leave, Summer blurted, โMr. Xavier, about that photo on Fraserโs desk of a girl, who is she?โ
Xavier thought to himself, It seemed she didnโt know the girl was her.
Xavierโs smile deepened at her conflicted expression. โNext time, take a closer look at that photo yourself. Youโll figure it out.โ
