Chapter 361: Enemies Across the Aisle

The moment Summerโ€™s donation was announced, the roomโ€™s energy shifted. Everyone started looking at her differently. Compliments poured in like confetti. She nodded politely, her gaze driftingโ€”slow, unbotheredโ€”toward Emelia and Morgan. The two of them stood stiffly among a cluster of society ladies, their faces visibly pale and tight. Morgan rolled her eyes more than once.

Summer gave a soft smile, her tone light and casual. โ€œMrs. Harper and her daughter donโ€™t look too thrilled to see me.โ€ Emelia had no choice but to force a smile. โ€œOf course not, Mrs. Graham. You look so healthy and vibrantโ€”itโ€™s truly a blessing to see you back on your feet.โ€

Summerโ€™s smile didnโ€™t waver. โ€œIs that so? After getting locked in a freezing storage room by one of your household staff, Iโ€™d say itโ€™s a miracle Iโ€™m still breathing.โ€ She said it right out in the open. Emelia hadnโ€™t expected her to bring it upโ€”let alone in public. Her smile froze, cracking at the edges. There was an audible shift among the crowd. Heads turned. People leaned in. Gossip was a universal language, after all.

Still, Emelia was an old pro. She recovered quickly, smoothing her face into gentle politeness. โ€œThat maidโ€™s already been dealt with. I hope youโ€™ll be gracious enough to let it go, Mrs. Graham. After all, the poor girl is dead. May she rest in peace, right?โ€

What a pretty little line. Yvette gave a sharp laugh. โ€œWow, okay. So a maidโ€™s worthless life is supposed to weigh the same as Mrs. Grahamโ€™s? Please. Forget the maidโ€”your daughter Morganโ€™s not even in the same league.โ€

Morganโ€™s expression snapped. She wasnโ€™t her motherโ€”she didnโ€™t know how to play nice. Just as she was about to lash out, Emelia clamped a hand on hers. Emelia smiled sweetly, her voice soft and weaponized. โ€œEveryone is equal. And Iโ€™m sure Mrs. Graham, being so kind and generous, wouldnโ€™t throw her weight around.โ€

Summerโ€™s face remained calm. Then she smiled. โ€œThereโ€™s a saying,โ€ she began, โ€œthe servants only do what theyโ€™re taught. I donโ€™t know if youโ€™ve heard it, Madam Harper. But Iโ€™m someone who remembers kindnessโ€”and repays cruelty in kind. Iโ€™m not good at pretending. I donโ€™t let a single grain of sand stay in my eye.โ€

Morgan snapped. She couldnโ€™t stand Summer. Just seeing her made her skin crawl. If it werenโ€™t for Summer, that maid wouldnโ€™t have died. She blamed Summer entirely. โ€œDonโ€™t push it!โ€ Morgan hissed. โ€œWhatever happened between us is over and done with!โ€

Holly, the charity chairwoman, looked like she was about to panic. She stepped in, trying to smooth things over with a nervous chuckle. โ€œLetโ€™s not dwell on unpleasant things tonight. Weโ€™re here to support a great cause. The eventโ€™s about to beginโ€”everyone, please take your seats!โ€

Morgan shot Summer a venomous glare before turning away with a sharp pivot. Emelia, scrambling to clean up the mess, followed quickly. โ€œSheโ€™s still young,โ€ Emelia said to the crowd with a breathless smile. โ€œPlease donโ€™t take it to heart.โ€

As soon as they were seated, Emelia leaned in close, whispering sharply. โ€œHow many times have I told you to keep it together? Do you know how many reporters are here tonight? Do you want to tank your reputation and the Harper name with one temper tantrum?โ€

Morgan slouched in her seat, wanting badly to light a cigaretteโ€”but forced herself to hold back. โ€œThis is ridiculous,โ€ she muttered. โ€œThat woman is practically dancing on our heads. How do you expect me to sit here and do nothing? If I bottle this up any longer, Iโ€™m gonna explode.โ€

Emelia was far calmer than her daughter. She was playing the long game. โ€œYour grandfather said the Graham Groupโ€™s upcoming shareholder summit could be a turning point. Thereโ€™s a good chance someone will knock Fraser off his throne. And once heโ€™s gone, Summer loses her safety net. Thatโ€™s when you can strikeโ€”however you want. But for now? Keep gone, it zipped.โ€

Morgan grumbled, โ€œFine. Iโ€™ll wait. But once the chance comes, Iโ€™m not holding back.โ€

The charity gala officially began in a swirl of warm applause. The emcee smiled on stage, going over the nightโ€™s schedule and highlighting the causes they would support.

Morganโ€™s glare could have cut glass. The sheer loathing in her eyes was sharp enough to chill the air. Summer barely blinked. She just smiled faintly in return. That smile made Morganโ€™s face twist even more.

Yvette returned from the hallway and sat down next to Summer, leaning in to whisper. โ€œI just found outโ€”Emelia arranged for Morgan to go on stage after the auction. That might be our openingโ€ฆ
