Chapter 342: The Setup
Morgan sneered. โIf you donโt say anything, who will know it was us? Weโll just find a scapegoat to take the fall.โ
Sasha pondered for a moment, then nodded. โThatโs true. The Bossman is only marrying that woman because sheโs pregnant. If something were to happen to the baby, maybe he wouldnโt value her so much anymore.โ
Liliah hesitated, glancing at Morgan and Sasha before whispering, โAre we really doing this?โ
Morgan smacked the back of her head. โIf you donโt, then youโre no longer one of mine.โ
Liliah winced, rubbing her head. She had no choice but to nod. โAlrightโฆโ
On the way to find Merry, Summer dialed her number. The phone rang several times before Merry finally answered.
Summer asked, โMerry, where are you?โ
โSummer, Iโฆ Iโm in the storage room behind the villa,โ Merry answered softly.
Hearing that, Summer asked further, โWhy are you there? I thought you were supposed to be the event staff?โ
Merry stammered over the phone. Summer understood immediately. The Harper familyโs maids were likely trying to curry favor with Morgan by bullying Merry.
She instructed, โForget it. Stop working and come home with me.โ
Merry looked around the cluttered storage room. Metal racks filled with various items towered over her, making the space feel chaotic and overwhelming. โThe butler said I canโt leave until I clean this place.โ
Summerโs voice was firm. โYou were hired as event staff, not a janitor. This is not even in your job scope. Just ignore them.โ
Merry hesitated, but Summer was right. All this suffering for just 137 dollars? Even beasts of burden had limits.
Determined, Merry started descending the ladder step by step. Suddenly, the screws on the ladder seemed to loosen. It wobbled dangerously, and before she could react, her foot slipped.
With a loud thud, Merry crashed to the ground, a sharp cry escaping her lips.
Chapter 47: The Setup
Hearing the impact through the phone, Summerโs grip tightened. โMerry! What happened?โ
Merry lay sprawled on the cold floor, trembling. She tried to move, but pain shot through her body. โSummer, Iโm okay. The ladder just gave way. I wasnโt careful and fell.โ
โStay where you are. Iโm coming.โ Summer stopped a maid with a ponytail. โWhereโs the storageโฆโ
The maid pointed in the direction. Then, Summer ordered the maid to send some help to the storage room before rushing off.
The villaโs storage room was quite a distance from the banquet hall; Summer would need to walk down a narrow path to reach it. The dim streetlights flickered, and the trees rustled eerily in the wind. Compared to the brightly lit banquet hall, the contrast was stark. One world was filled with laughter and warmth; the other was shrouded in darkness.
As she neared the storage room, she noticed its doors were wide open. Just as she was about to step inside, she hesitated. She pressed herself against the nearby wall, waiting a moment. Just in case anything happens. She pulled out her phone to text Fraser.
But when she glanced at her screen, her heart sank. There was no signal. Her unease deepened.
Why did Merry conveniently have an accident in the storage room? Why did my phone lose service the moment I arrived? Her instincts screamed at her. She decided to return to the Banquet hall, find Fraser, and then come back with help.
But just as she turned to leave, a terrified scream echoed from within the storage room. Summer clenched her teeth. There was no time to hesitate.
She spun around and rushed inside. โMerry! What happened?โ
Seeing Summerโs silhouette in the doorway, Merry let out a shaky breath. โThe lights suddenly went out. And I swear I saw a ghost in the window just now. It scared me half to death!โ
Summer switched on her phoneโs flashlight and swept it around the dark, cluttered room until the beam landed on Merry, who was still on the floor.
โWe need to get out of here. Can you walk?โ Summer asked.
Merry gritted her teeth and tried to stand, but her ankle gave way beneath her.
Chapter 342: The Setup
The door groaned ominously before slamming shut with a deafening clang.
Merryโs eyes widened in terror. โWhatโs happening?! Is someone there? Help! Weโre locked in!โ
She fumbled for her phone, but just like Summerโs, it had lost all signal. Summer guided her to sit against the wall before striding to the door and pounding against it.
Deep in thought, her expression darkened. โSomeone wanted me here. They planned this.โ
Merryโs face paled as realization dawned on her. Guilt flooded her eyes. โI get it now. They used me as bait! Iโm so sorry, Summer. I dragged you into thisโฆโ
