Chapter 246: Schemes and Alliances

Just like that, Julia was unceremoniously ushered out of the Graham Mansion. As she stood before the towering wrought-iron gates, her heart ached at the thought of Summerโ€™s unborn child.

I had come hoping to test the Grahamsโ€™ attitude. If there had been even a hint of openness, I would have revealed Summerโ€™s pregnancy. But Madam Grahamโ€™s hostility made it clear: acceptance would be harder than scaling the heavens.

Inside the Graham Mansion, a figure dressed all in blackโ€”a hooded sweatshirt and pantsโ€”was discreetly ushered through a side entrance by the butler.

โ€œMadam Graham,โ€ the man bowed respectfully before making his report.

Helenโ€™s expression changed from calm to anger. โ€œPregnant?! So thatโ€™s why this woman came crawling here today!โ€

The butler ventured cautiously, โ€œShall weโ€ฆallow things to proceed between Mr. Graham and Ms. Stewart?โ€

โ€œLet her bring a child into our family? Never!โ€ Helenโ€™s nails dug into the armrests.

The butler hesitated, โ€œAnywayโ€ฆthat child is still Mr. Grahamโ€™s.โ€

โ€œStop!โ€ Helen interrupted coldly, her eyes blazing. โ€œItโ€™s not even certain if itโ€™s Fraserโ€™s.โ€

โ€œThenโ€ฆwhat do you mean?โ€ The butler looked at her cautiously.

Helen frowned, contemplated for a while, and let out a cold laugh. โ€œThat bitch took our shares, promising to leave Fraser alone, then deliberately got pregnant. Such cunning cannot be rewarded!โ€

After a weighted pause, her lips curled. โ€œLet her carry to term. If the DNA proves itโ€™s a Graham, weโ€™ll take the child.โ€

The butler nodded. โ€œUnderstood.โ€

Since Lucas had been introduced to expert Ryan, he and Summer had grown closer. Recognizing her need for guidance in running the Stewart Group, he frequently invited her to industry events.

Todayโ€™s Corporate Leadership Forum proved particularly enlightening. As applause followed a keynote address, Lucas handed Summer a glass of water.

โ€œRest your voice. Youโ€™ve been asking questions nonstop.โ€

โ€œThank you.โ€ She took a sip. โ€œThese management strategies are just what I needed.โ€

Lucas adjusted his glasses and smiled. โ€œRare to meet a woman so dedicated to the dry details of business.โ€

Summer arched her brow. โ€œOh? What are the women you know usually like?โ€

Truth be told, Lucas had little experience with women beyond his college sweetheart, a dancer. Summer was his first encounter with someone who genuinely enjoyed boardroom battles.

โ€œWomen should be nurtured,โ€ he said pointedly. โ€œToo much striving isnโ€™t becomingโ€ฆโ€

Summer laughed. โ€œWhat choice do I have? I canโ€™t let the Stewart malls crumble on my watchโ€ฆโ€

Lucasโ€™s eyes softened behind his glasses. โ€œYouโ€™re too stubborn for your own good.โ€

At the buffet, he piled delicate pastries on her plate. The moment the cloying sweetness hit her tongue, Summerโ€™s stomach revolted.

Before she could answer, the forum organizers approached. โ€œMr. Lucas, the participants are requesting your insights on stage.โ€

Lucas felt a bit embarrassed.

Summer waved him off. โ€œGo ahead. Iโ€™ll get some air.โ€

Lucas hesitated. โ€œDonโ€™t go far. Iโ€™ll drive you home afterward.โ€

โ€œIโ€™m not a kid,โ€ she teased.

The sprawling five-star property had several function rooms, but Summer only needed the patio. These days, even mild smells made me nauseous. My pregnancy was nearing the three-month mark.

Suddenly, two boys ran around a hedge brandishing toy guns.

โ€œBang! Bang! Youโ€™re dead!โ€

One darted behind Summer, using her as a shield as he tugged at her skirt. โ€œStay still! Block him!โ€

Class pellets stabbed her arms. Summer quickly covered her stomach and was about to step away.

โ€œNo! You canโ€™t go!โ€ The brat clung tighter. โ€œYou have to block him in front of me!โ€

Summer poked at his grubby fingers. โ€œIโ€™m not going to play. Where are your parents?โ€
