Chapter 99

โ€œWhat should we do, then?โ€ Miranda said.

Josiahโ€™s tone was full of helplessness, yet carried an unmistakable trace of affection. โ€œShe loves dancing, and if she canโ€™t dance, she gets upset. So why not make sure itโ€™s in the best place possible?โ€

It made perfect sense. Miranda couldnโ€™t help but admire his thoughtfulness.

โ€œYou really put a lot of effort into this,โ€ she said, glancing sideways at him. โ€œLooks like youโ€™re serious about Sienna, huh?โ€

โ€œGrandma,โ€ Josiah replied, slightly surprised, โ€œdid you think I was just fooling around?โ€

โ€œAlright, alright,โ€ Miranda sighed and nodded. โ€œAs long as you donโ€™t hurt her, I wonโ€™t meddle in how you go after her. Thatโ€™s all on you.โ€

โ€œThanks, Grandma.โ€ A slight smile played on Josiahโ€™s lips.

โ€œIโ€™m planning to wait until Sienna gets back so I can go with her.โ€ His gaze darkened briefly before he continued, โ€œAt a time when Yvetteโ€™s not aroundโ€ฆโ€

It wasnโ€™t exactly a secret that Sienna and Yvette didnโ€™t get along.

โ€œThatโ€™s the right call,โ€ Miranda said in a lower voice, as if giving him a warning. โ€œNo matter what happens between you and Sienna, you need to show some respect to Yvette. Sheโ€™s been through a lot these past few years.โ€

Miranda sighed deeply. โ€œThat childโ€™s Yvetteโ€™s sore spotโ€ฆโ€

While they could all forgive Siennaโ€™s mistakes, it wouldnโ€™t be so easy for Yvette. Even though she claimed to have moved on, Josiah could sense that deep down, she still held a grudge against Sienna.

โ€œGrandma, I understand.โ€ Josiahโ€™s eyes darkened, his voice carrying a weighty promise. โ€œDonโ€™t worry, Iโ€™ll handle it. Now, Grandma, you should drink your milk and go to bed.โ€

โ€œOh, alright,โ€ Miranda nodded.

Outside the room, Yvette froze, holding her breath. She crept away as quietly as she could, her face pale, her mind a mess.

So Josiahโ€™s real reason for keeping Sienna from finding work was to get her into Brendaโ€™s dance studio. And then he had the nerve to talk about pursuing her. Isnโ€™t he supposed to hate her? Hasnโ€™t he sworn heโ€™d never forgive her? she wondered. How could things have changed so drastically? Did something happen?

Two days later, Sienna returned with Brenda. She had just started at the dance studio and hadnโ€™t even been assigned a program or set role on stage. Brenda wanted her to get familiar with the studioโ€™s staff, layout, and routines as quickly as possible. All her transportation was arranged by Brendaโ€™s assistant, and they traveled by high-speed train.

Once Sienna found her seat and settled in, her phone buzzed. It was Josiah.

โ€œHello,โ€ she answered as she swiped to answer the call.

โ€œYouโ€™re back, right?โ€ Josiahโ€™s voice carried an understated warmth. โ€œWhat time will you arrive at the station? Iโ€™ll send Zaid to pick you up. Come by the office.โ€

โ€œThe office?โ€ Sienna frowned. โ€œWhatโ€™s going on? Is something wrong?โ€

โ€œNot at all,โ€ Josiah replied, keeping the details vague. โ€œYouโ€™ll find out when you get here. Donโ€™t worryโ€ฆ itโ€™s good news.โ€

โ€œAlright, I can come.โ€ Siennaโ€™s tone was more polite than usual, likely due to the help Josiah had given her with the dance studio. โ€œBut thereโ€™s no need for Zaid to pick me up. Iโ€™ll get there on my own.โ€

Josiah sounded annoyed. โ€œWhy turn down a ride when itโ€™s already arranged?โ€

โ€œWait,โ€ Sienna said quickly, sensing his temper flare. โ€œThere are a lot of coworkers traveling with me. Your carโ€™s too flashy. I just started at the studio, and I got in through connections as it is. I donโ€™t want to draw too much attention.โ€

โ€œOh, I seeโ€ฆโ€ Josiahโ€™s tone softened. โ€œAlright, fair enough. If you want to keep a low profile, Iโ€™ll go along with that.โ€

He chuckled lightly before adding, โ€œSienna, isnโ€™t it good that Iโ€™m willing to listen to you like this?โ€

โ€œIs he crazy?โ€ she wondered. Sienna was startled enough to end the call abruptly.

โ€œHuh?โ€ The coworker sitting next to her looked over with concern. โ€œSienna, are you okay? Your face is so pale!โ€

โ€œMy face!โ€ Sienna instinctively touched her cheeks, confused.

โ€œYeah.โ€ Her coworker gestured teasingly. โ€œItโ€™s so pale like you just saw a ghost or something.โ€

โ€œA ghost?โ€ Sienna forced a smile as she thought, โ€œWell, if hearing Josiah say those things doesnโ€™t count as seeing a ghost, what will?โ€

Meanwhile, Josiah stared at his phone, his brow twitching before he suddenly chuckled. โ€œShe hung up on me.โ€

โ€˜Fine,โ€™ he thought, โ€˜I wouldnโ€™t let myself get mad. I canโ€™t afford to.โ€™ Setting the phone down, he focused on his work. He had plans for the eveningโ€”to visit Howard and spend time with Siennaโ€”so he needed to finish everything first.

Passing by the secretaryโ€™s office, he noticed the team enjoying their afternoon tea. Josiah walked past but quickly turned back, stopping in front of Lucyโ€™s desk.

โ€œHello, Mr. Flynnโ€ฆโ€ Lucy stammered, visibly nervous. She hurriedly wiped her mouth and stood up.

โ€œHi,โ€ Josiah curved his lips into a smile, his gaze briefly sweeping the room.

Instantly, all eyes in the secretariesโ€™ office locked onto Lucy. โ€˜Mr. Flynn has just smiled at her! Smiled? Whatโ€™s going on? Could it beโ€ฆ Mr. Flynn has taken a liking to Lucy?โ€™ they wondered.

Lucyโ€™s own thoughts ran wild. Her face flushed as excitement bubbled up inside her. Josiah was young, wealthy, and admired by countless employees across the company. Oh my god, am I really this lucky? she thought.

โ€œExcuse me,โ€ Josiah began, promptly bursting her bubble. He pointed at the brown paper bag on her desk. โ€œWhatโ€™s that?โ€

โ€œThis?โ€ Lucy quickly picked up a small round treat from the bag. โ€œHawthorn candy, Mr. Flynn. Itโ€™s coated with a layer of sugar.โ€

โ€œOh, they taste pretty good, donโ€™t they?โ€ he asked.

โ€œUh, yes,โ€ Lucy nodded eagerly. โ€œWould you like to try some?โ€

โ€œIโ€™ll pass,โ€ Josiah said with a wave of his hand, then smiled again. โ€œBut you know what? Why donโ€™t you get me a bag? Actually, make it two.โ€ Considering how few pieces were in one bag, two seemed more reasonable.

โ€œTwo?โ€ Lucy blinked, dumbfounded. โ€˜Mr. Flynn came all the way over just to ask me to buy hawthorn candy?โ€™ she wondered.

โ€œSomething wrong?โ€ Josiah raised an eyebrow. โ€œCanโ€™t do it?โ€

โ€œNo, no, of course I can!โ€ Lucy said quickly. โ€œIโ€™ll get them right away.โ€

Her dreams might have been crushed, but the idea of Josiah craving hawthorn candy was just too endearing. Probably no one wouldโ€™ve thoughtโ€ฆ

โ€œMr. Flynn,โ€ Lucy hesitated, picking up her phone, still a little giddy. โ€œHow should I, uh, get the money from you?โ€ Is this my chance to exchange WhatsApp details? she wondered.

โ€œOh, right, the moneyโ€ฆโ€ Josiah appeared to remember, then gestured behind him at Zach. โ€œAsk Mr. Reed.โ€

With that, he strode off, leaving Zach to add, โ€œCome find me after the meeting.โ€

โ€œOkay, Mr. Reedโ€ฆโ€ Lucy sighed, realizing she wouldnโ€™t be getting anything out of this encounter after all.

Her coworkers began teasing her. โ€œDreaming, werenโ€™t you? Mr. Flynn isnโ€™t the type to flirt.โ€

โ€œAlright, break it up. Iโ€™ve got to buy Mr. Flynn his hawthorn candy.โ€

โ€œDonโ€™t forget two bags!โ€

They burst into laughter.

After his meeting, Josiah returned to his office, only to find Yvette waiting for him.

โ€œYvette, what brings you here? Is something wrong?โ€ he asked.

Yvette had only just arrived and barely sat down for two minutes before Josiah walked in. His question sounded casual, but the memory of his conversation with Miranda lingered in Yvetteโ€™s mind. It left her with the distinct impression that he wasnโ€™t happy to see her.

โ€œWhatโ€™s the matter?โ€ Yvette asked, her tone cool. โ€œNot happy to see me?โ€
