Chapter 66

Suddenly, lights flickered on, causing both Sienna and Josiah to squeeze their eyes shut.

โ€œThe powerโ€™s back on!โ€ Sienna exclaimed joyfully, opening her eyes first. She froze. Josiahโ€™s handsome face was inches away, his lips almost touching hers. She thought he was going to kiss her, a cold sweat breaking out. But then she realized it was impossible; Josiah hated her. The darkness must have been the reason.

โ€œUh,โ€ Sienna whispered, โ€œThe powerโ€™s back on.โ€

โ€œOh,โ€ Josiah replied, his face emotionless, though internally he was a whirlwind of emotions. He had almost kissed Sienna. He didn't understand his attraction to her, his sudden urge to kiss her.

Affecting calm, Josiah released Sienna, stood up, and said in a lazy, indifferent tone, โ€œSince everythingโ€™s fine, Iโ€™ll be going.โ€

โ€œOkay, sure,โ€ Sienna said, rising and walking with him to the door. โ€œBe careful.โ€

โ€œAlright,โ€ Josiah replied, turning and walking away without looking back. Downstairs, he quickly glanced back at Siennaโ€™s window. His long eyelashes hid his thoughts.

The next day, Josiah visited his brother, Howard. A doctorโ€™s urgent call had summoned him; he was the only one available, Yvette being out of town for a shoot.

โ€œMr. Flynn,โ€ the doctor began, indicating he had important news regarding Howard.

โ€œWhatโ€™s going on? Just tell me straight,โ€ Josiah said, his brow furrowed with worry.

โ€œMr. Flynn,โ€ the doctor said reassuringly, โ€œDonโ€™t worry, itโ€™s not bad news. A new medication, developed abroad, specifically targets your brotherโ€™s condition.โ€

โ€œOh?โ€ Josiahโ€™s eyes lit up. โ€œTell me more.โ€

โ€œThe drug,โ€ the doctor explained, โ€œwas independently developed by a hospital abroad and has been used in clinical practice, even successfully waking patients from comas lasting years.โ€

He continued, โ€œEven though Howard has been in a coma for many years, his physical functions are well-maintained. I believe we could try this medication; thereโ€™s a chance of success.โ€

The medication, however, wasn't widely available or mass-produced. Obtaining it required significant funds and navigating the right channels. A small-town doctor like himself couldnโ€™t manage it, but the Flynn family might.

โ€œMr. Flynn, do you think you could find a way to get this medication?โ€

Josiah nodded. โ€œAlright, Iโ€™ll find a way.โ€ No matter how difficult, he would try everything for Howard. He wanted to wake him, to help him leave the bed heโ€™d been confined to for years.

He paused, then instructed the doctor, โ€œPlease, donโ€™t mention this to Grandma and Yvette yet.โ€

โ€œOkay,โ€ the doctor replied, understanding. While there had been successes, it wasnโ€™t a guarantee. Years of disappointment had taught them caution. Josiah wanted to bear the pressure alone, before Howard awoke. If Howard woke, everyone would rejoice. If not, the sorrow would be his alone.

After Mirandaโ€™s surgery, her recovery was progressing well. She was preparing for discharge in the next few days, focusing on recuperation. With the Flynn familyโ€™s resources, home would be superior to any rehabilitation center.

On the day of her discharge, Sienna was there.

โ€œSienna,โ€ Miranda said joyfully, holding her hand. โ€œYouโ€™re always so good, arriving first.โ€

Just then, Josiah entered, seeing Sienna. His eyes lit up involuntarily. Raising an eyebrow, he said with unplanned joy, โ€œGrandma, are you saying any effort in staying the past few nights counted for nothing!โ€

โ€œStop fishing for compliments,โ€ Miranda chuckled, patting Siennaโ€™s hand. โ€œOur Sienna is so obedient and considerate, while youโ€™re just standing here like a log. How can it be the same?โ€

โ€œHmph,โ€ Josiah chuckled, โ€œFine, your Sienna is the best.โ€

โ€œOh right,โ€ Miranda pulled Sienna closer and said seriously, โ€œSienna, stay at our house with me for the next few days.โ€ Her tone was declarative, leaving no room for discussion.

Sienna hesitated. โ€œGrandma, it doesnโ€™t seem appropriate, considering my current relationship with Josiah.โ€

โ€œWhatโ€™s inappropriate about it?โ€ Miranda gave her a playful glare. โ€œJust because you and Josiah couldnโ€™t become a couple, does it mean you shouldnโ€™t call me Grandma anymore?โ€

โ€œOf course not,โ€ Sienna immediately shook her head.

โ€œThen thatโ€™s settled, right?โ€ Miranda laughed. โ€œTo me, youโ€™ll always be my granddaughter. I just got out of the hospital. Canโ€™t you stay with me for a few days?โ€

Sienna found it hard to refuse.

Josiah chimed in, โ€œSienna, just say yes. Yvette isnโ€™t around these days, and Grandma has no one to talk to.โ€

Sienna agreed. โ€œAlright, Iโ€™ll come over and stay with Grandma for a few days.โ€

โ€œGreat!โ€ Miranda was delighted, patting her hand and smoothing her hair. โ€œYouโ€™re such a good kid.โ€

Since Sienna would be staying for a few days, she needed to collect some belongings from 12th Avenue. Miranda instructed Josiah to accompany her. Heโ€™d already planned to.

Back on 12th Avenue, Sienna gathered her things and got into the car. On the way to the Flynn residence, Sienna remembered something and turned to Josiah. โ€œBy the way, when is Yvette coming back?โ€

โ€œIn a few more days. Why do you ask?โ€

โ€œOh,โ€ Sienna nodded. โ€œIf she comes back, could you let me know ahead of time?โ€

โ€œHmm,โ€ Josiah was surprised. โ€œWhy?โ€ He was surprised by her question.

โ€œOf course Iโ€™m leaving,โ€ Sienna replied. โ€œShe doesnโ€™t want to see me. You know she canโ€™t stand being under the same roof as me.โ€

Hearing this, Josiah was taken aback, tightening his grip on the steering wheel. With a slight laugh, he said, โ€œYouโ€™re overthinking it. Yvette isnโ€™t that petty. Sheโ€™s forgotten about the past.โ€

Sienna smiled faintly and shook her head imperceptibly. โ€œThen think of it this way; maybe Iโ€™m too embarrassed to face her.โ€

Josiah was momentarily speechless. Those were his own words to her, so he couldnโ€™t argue.

That night, Sienna stayed at the Flynn residence. After dinner, Miranda asked Josiah to stay for a chat.

โ€œGrandma, do you need something?โ€

โ€œYes,โ€ Miranda took a sip of her coffee. โ€œDo you know why I wanted Sienna to stay with us?โ€

Josiah raised an eyebrow. โ€œDidnโ€™t you say you wanted her to keep you company?โ€

โ€œYouโ€ฆโ€ Miranda paused, chuckled helplessly, and shook her head. Sighing, she said, โ€œNever mind. Iโ€™ve come to terms with it. You really just donโ€™t like Sienna, and Iโ€™ve accepted that.โ€

Josiah was surprised. โ€œWhat did I do?โ€ He didnโ€™t understand why it always came back to him disliking Sienna.

Miranda glared at him. โ€œEven if youโ€™re not husband and wife, you grew up together and share a bond. As her brother, you canโ€™t even remember her birthday! If Howard were here, he would definitely remember.โ€

Josiah was surprised to learn Siennaโ€™s birthday was approaching.

Miranda continued, โ€œIโ€™m planning to throw her a proper birthday party, and then Iโ€™ll find her a good match.โ€
