Chapter 838

When he finished, I found myself curling even tighter. Hayden shifted closer, his hand brushing mine. โ€œAre you scared of what Iโ€™ve told you so far?โ€

The truth was, not really. So far, it was just a rundown of shady deals and insane tests heโ€™d endured. But my mind had already spun it into something straight out of an undercover spy movieโ€”life-or-death situations, impossible choices, brutal sacrifices.

โ€œHayden,โ€ I whispered, cutting off my own spiraling thoughts. โ€œHold me.โ€

He hesitated, his grip on my hand firm but cautious, like he wasnโ€™t sure if Iโ€™d pull away again. I didnโ€™t. Instead, I leaned forward, wrapping my arms around him.

His chin came to rest lightly on the top of my head, that small, familiar gesture unraveling the doubts still clinging to me. This wasnโ€™t Xander, wasnโ€™t some stranger. This was Hayden. My Hayden.

Without thinking, my hands slid under his shirt, gliding along his waist.

โ€œKiki,โ€ he said, his voice tight, โ€œthere are no injuries.โ€

I kept going. โ€œLet me see for myself.โ€

โ€œAre you sure?โ€ His lips twitched like he was holding back.

โ€œYes, Iโ€™m sure,โ€ I said flatly. I mean, I was pregnantโ€”he wouldnโ€™t dare try anything sketchy now.

โ€œStill bossy,โ€ he murmured, his tone indulgent. Then, with one smooth motion, he pulled his shirt off.

I blinked. Every nerve in my body short-circuited at the sight of himโ€”the sculpted muscles, the sharp lines of his abs. For a second, I just stared, completely forgetting why Iโ€™d asked him to take it off in the first place.

โ€œWerenโ€™t you checking for injuries?โ€ he teased, his soft laughter snapping me back to reality.

Heat rushed to my face. โ€œI am!โ€

My hands moved over his skin, careful and focused. No fresh cuts, no bruisesโ€”nothing but the old scars I already knew. He really hadnโ€™t lied.

โ€œYouโ€™re incredible,โ€ I said, exhaling in relief. โ€œWhatever youโ€™ve been throughโ€ฆ I canโ€™t even imagine. Itโ€™s like something out of an action movie.โ€

Without realizing it, my hand brushed his abs again, the memory hitting me hard. Back when we used to fall asleep together, my hand would always end up resting on his stomach, like it was the only way I could settle. It had been so long since Iโ€™d felt this.

Hayden didnโ€™t push me away. He just sat there, letting me touch him, letting me take my time. The silence grew, but it wasnโ€™t heavy. If anything, it felt peaceful, like weโ€™d both finally found something weโ€™d thought was gone.

Then he pulled me into another hug, his arms tight around me. โ€œI thought you wouldnโ€™t recognize me,โ€ he admitted. โ€œFigured youโ€™d chase me out.โ€

Hayden had caught me totally off guard by showing up out of nowhere. Iโ€™d sworn a million times that if I ever saw him again, Iโ€™d punch him. But when the moment came? I just couldnโ€™t do it.

Even with all the tension hanging between us, lashing out felt pointless. Maybe Iโ€™d grown up. Maybe Iโ€™d finally learned not to let my emotions run the show.

โ€œYou sound disappointed,โ€ I teased, poking him lightly. โ€œWant me to make up for it?โ€

โ€œWeโ€™ll keep a tab and settle it later.โ€ His tone was light.

But my smile faded as I straightened, my voice serious. โ€œHayden, if Lena doesnโ€™t come back, or if anything happens to her, I wonโ€™t forgive you. I donโ€™t care what your reasons were for taking her.โ€

I needed him to understand there was no wiggle room here. Earlier, heโ€™d explained it was a strategic move, something about needing Aaronโ€™s influence to pull off his plan. He admitted Aaronโ€™s help was the only reason heโ€™d made it back so quickly.

โ€œI get it,โ€ Hayden said softly. He pressed a kiss to my forehead, his hand resting gently over my stomach.

The call came in the middle of the night, jolting me awake. The second I saw Lenaโ€™s name on the screen, sleep was a distant memory.

โ€œLena!โ€

โ€œDid I wake you and my godchild?โ€ she teased.

โ€œThis is the best interruption of my life,โ€ I said, laughing as tension melted from my body.

โ€œReally? I figured with Hayden there, youโ€™d be too busy enjoying your little โ€˜love paradiseโ€™ to care about my call,โ€ she quipped.
