Chapter 799

I trusted Lena completely. โ€œDonโ€™t worry. Iโ€™ve seen your ultrasoundโ€”the babyโ€™s fine,โ€ Lena said, her lips curving into the faintest smile. Even that small reassurance made me feel a little more grounded.

โ€œYou have to help me keep this baby,โ€ I said, my voice cracking.

โ€œI know,โ€ she replied, her tone teasing as she added, โ€œThis is your love child with Hayden, after all.โ€

Jace turned away at that, but not fast enough to hide the flicker of loneliness on his face. Our tangled history had unraveled a long time agoโ€”at least for me. Jace claimed heโ€™d moved on, but moments like this made it clear he hadnโ€™t completely.

Thanks to Lena, I got admitted to a hospital roomโ€”not her office, but a proper VIP suite. The pain in my abdomen eased up, and the bleeding wasnโ€™t getting worse. With my nerves settling, I finally had space to think about something else. โ€œWhatโ€™s the deal with Dr. Cahn? Howโ€™d she score a job here?โ€

Lena hesitated for a second before answering. โ€œSheโ€™s Rettaโ€™s aunt.โ€

Ah. That explained the attitude.

I watched Lena quietly. She looked calm as always, but there was something offโ€”her face was slightly drawn, like she hadnโ€™t been sleeping well. She and Nate had broken up recently, and while sheโ€™d been the one to call it off, I knew it hadnโ€™t been easy. Nate had been her first love, her inspiration for becoming a doctor. Losing that connectionโ€ฆ yeah, I understood how much that hurt.

But I didnโ€™t say anything. Some wounds werenโ€™t meant to be poked at.

โ€œJace will probably go straight to your boss and file a complaint against her,โ€ I said lightly.

โ€œLet him. She deserves it,โ€ Lena replied, not even pretending to feel bad.

Her bluntness made me laugh. โ€œYouโ€™re as sharp as ever. Tough as nails.โ€

โ€œBeing soft-hearted just gets you stabbed in the back. Iโ€™m not an idiot,โ€ she said, peeling a tangerine and handing me half.

I popped a piece into my mouth. The tangy flavor snapped me awake in the best way. Lena, meanwhile, grimaced and shoved the rest of hers at me.

โ€œItโ€™s not even sour,โ€ I said, grinning.

โ€œYouโ€™re pregnant,โ€ she replied flatly, raising an eyebrow. โ€œYou didnโ€™t even realize you were pregnant! Do you not keep track of your cycles? Craving sour foods, nauseaโ€”didnโ€™t any of that clue you in?โ€

There it wasโ€”the Lena Lecture.

I shrugged, chewing on another slice. โ€œYou know what Iโ€™ve been dealing with. Where was I supposed to find the brainpower to think about that?โ€

Ever since Hayden went off-grid, my lifeโ€™s been a complete mess. No sleep, no focus, no sense of time. Every ache and pain? I just blamed it on stress. Pregnancy? Yeah, that didnโ€™t even make the list.

โ€œCompletely careless,โ€ Lena muttered with a sigh. Then, she added, โ€œSo now that thereโ€™s a baby, whenโ€™s Hayden coming back? Or are we waiting until the kid can say โ€˜Dadโ€™?โ€

โ€œWayne says itโ€™ll be soon,โ€ I said, my voice tinged with unease. โ€œBut who knows what kind of state Hayden will be in when he does?โ€

Wayne and Cole were cornered, desperate. Burning Cloudscape Monastery, abducting me in broad daylightโ€”theyโ€™d already gone full scorched earth. If they treated me like this, Hayden was probably dealing with worse.

โ€œLena, Iโ€™m really worried about Hayden,โ€ I said, my chest tightening just saying it out loud.

But Lena didnโ€™t respond. I looked up and found her staring at her phone, completely zoned out.

โ€œLena, whatโ€™s wrong?โ€ I asked, my own anxiety spiking.
