Chapter 76
The instruction to not wash our hands was directed at both Wayne and me. I was fine with it, but Wayne looked a little awkward.
โI wonโt get sick from a little dirt,โ I said, trying to lighten the mood. Hayden walked over, holding a pack of wet wipes. Wayne reached for them, but Hayden held on tight. So, I took the pack, gave Wayne a wipe, and then took one for myself.
โRea, whoโs this?โ Wayne asked, eyeing Hayden with clear curiosity about his unfriendly demeanor.
โThis is Hayden Hart, our lighting engineer,โ I introduced him, feeling the weight of Haydenโs intense gaze. โAnd this is my friend, Wayne.โ
โNice to meet you,โ Wayne said, extending his hand. Hayden only nodded. Before things could get awkward, Demi interjected, โMr. Hart has a bit of a germaphobia.โ
Wayne smiled faintly, withdrew his hand, and turned to me. โLetโs sit down and eat before the food gets cold.โ
Demi licked her lips, eyeing the gnocchi. โCan I have one?โ
โOf course,โ Wayne said, politely offering some to Hayden. โMr. Hart, would you like to try some?โ
โIโll stick with my porridge,โ Hayden declined, already walking away.
Demi paused mid-bite, then looked at me with a smirk. โKeira, I think Mr. Hart has a serious stick up his butt.โ
I gave her a thumbs-up. โYouโre spot on.โ
Wayne chuckled at our exchange. โMr. Hart seems to have a bit of a temper.โ
โNot usually. Heโs usually cool and collected, though kind of distant. But today, heโs got a short fuse,โ Demi said, her mouth full but still managing to speak.
Fortunately, our food arrived. After finishing the gnocchi and cucumber soup, I wasnโt hungry for anything else. I left the rest for Demi and Hayden.
Demi was eager to share the meal with Hayden, but he insisted she eat without him as he had to return to work. I found his dismissal of her amusing.
โYou seem cheerful. I was worried you might be feeling down,โ Wayne said, bringing my attention back to him.
โWhy would I be down?โ I asked, taking another bite of gnocchi and sipping my soup. Iโm not the type to wallow in heartbreak. When Iโm in love, that person is my whole world. But when itโs over, theyโre nothing.โ
Wayne nodded. โThatโs the Rea I know.โ
โHow are your parents?โ I asked cautiously. It was odd they hadnโt contacted me lately. Had they finally accepted that Jace and I were over? That didnโt seem like them.
Wayne gave me a small smile. โDo you think theyโre doing okay?โ
My fork froze. Wayne continued, โThey still think you and Jace are just on a break. Theyโre convinced youโll work it out, that youโre just cooling off and need some space.โ
So thatโs what was going on. The gnocchi suddenly tasted like cardboard. I forced it down and muttered, โTheyโre going to be disappointed.โ
โMaybe, but theyโll get over it eventually. Donโt let it weigh on you,โ Wayne said reassuringly.
I wasnโt stressedโjust guilty. Theyโd treated me like their own child.
โThey see you as their daughter. The idea of you not being around? Thatโs hard for them,โ Wayne added softly.
โDaughters get married eventually. But even after that, they can always come home,โ I replied.
When I looked up, Wayne was watching me. There was something in his eyes, a flicker of something deeper, as he smiled. โBut if you married into my family, youโd be home for good.โ
Yeah, that wasnโt happening.
