Chapter 740
I didnโt get my answer. Why? Because I got hauled off by the police. Yep, you heard that rightโI was detained.
Now, Iโm no legal expert, but Iโm pretty sure suspects in an investigation arenโt supposed to end up locked in a cell. Which meant one thing: this had Hayden written all over it. Heโd warned me this might happen, so I wasnโt exactly freaking out. If anything, I stayed calm, knowing this was probably his version of โkeeping me safe.โ
My first visitor? My boss, of course. Ron didnโt waste a second before cracking a joke: โKeira Kay, maybe the police should just take over your paycheck this month.โ
Thinking about how little Iโd been showing up at work lately, guilt crept in even before Ron made his snarky comment. โFine. Consider this my verbal resignation. Iโll make it official when Iโm out of here.โ
Ron waved me off. โI didnโt come here to make you quit. Donโt overthink it.โ
I smiled faintly. โI know, but letโs be realโif I were the boss, Iโd have fired me weeks ago.โ
Ron raised an eyebrow. โYouโre power plusโoneโhow could it be the same?โ
There it was. He finally said it outright. And judging by how much Ron probably knew about Hayden-Xanderโs real situation, heโd been playing dumb with me all along.
Feeling mischievous, I smirked. โPower plusโone? Oh, you mean Hayden? Yeah, heโs long goneโnothing but ashes now.โ
Ronโs expression twitched, barely. โLetโs not pretend, okay? We both know the truth.โ
โTruth? What truth?โ I said, feigning ignorance.
His face cycled through a whole soap opera of expressions before he leaned in close and mouthed, โHayden asked me to tell you not to worry. Just stay here for a few days, and itโll all be fine.โ
No kidding. I already knew Iโd be stuck here for a bit, but seriouslyโit was mind-numbing. The last time I got dragged into police drama was thanks to Tanyaโs moronic brother. Speaking of Brad, heโd been laying low ever since. Rumor had it, Wayne managed to leash him. The guy was probably working for him now.
Since I had zero plans and Ron was just sitting there, I figured, why not mess with him a little? โSo, howโd Hayden spill the tea? Did he pop up in a dream, or do you, like, have a hotline to the afterlife?โ
Ronโs lips twitched. โAlright, fine. I shouldnโt have tried to fool you, but Hayden told me to keep my mouth shut. What was I supposed to do?โ
The defeated look on his face just fueled my need to keep poking. โWait, so did Hayden specifically tell you to keep me out of the loop?โ
โYou and Hayden are back to being all cute and cringe now. Can you chill and stop making my life miserable?โ
He had a point. After everything Hayden and I had been through, what even was the point of fighting about this?
Still, since I had Ron cornered, I wasnโt about to let the opportunity slip. โSo, spill. Howโs Hayden doing now?โ
โHeโs been discharged.โ
โWait, what? Already? The guy was practically a human punching bag last time I saw him! I wasnโt buying it for a second.โ
Ron shrugged. โHeโs recovering at home.โ
Yeah, right. โLet me guessโโrecovering at homeโ means heโs off doing something sketchy, doesnโt it?โ
Ron shook his head, but his face? Total giveaway. Liar.
โRon Shane,โ I snapped, โdonโt even try to play me. Hayden locked me up here so I wouldnโt get in his way, right? Whatever heโs planning, he doesnโt want me stopping it.โ
Sure, he claimed it was to โprotectโ me, but the timing was too sketchy. I get locked up, and boomโhe checks out of the hospital like itโs nothing? Yeah, no. Something was definitely going down.
Ron sighed. โI knew it. Youโre too sharp for your own good. Honestly, I shouldnโt have even come. Hayden made me check on you.โ
โThen spill. Whatโs he up to?โ My patience was running thin.
He hesitated, then clamped his mouth shut. Finally, he gave in. โWayne and Cole are smuggling a group of people out of the country; Haydenโs overseeing the whole thing.โ
So that was the โcooperationโ Hayden mentioned. Guess he really went through with it after all.
