Chapter 543

Once was enough for me to humble myself for love; Iโ€™m done making that mistake.

โ€œHayden, you seem to be forgetting somethingโ€”weโ€™re enemies. I let you go a long time ago. Whoever you marry? Doesnโ€™t matter to me. Iโ€™ll even send a wedding gift if you want.โ€

I forced a smile. โ€œNo need to worry. Iโ€™m not clinging to you. When I decide to move on, I donโ€™t look back. Jace and I were together for ten years, and once I was done, I was done. With you? We barely lasted a few months.โ€

I took a breath, feeling my voice steady. โ€œAnd letโ€™s not forgetโ€”your dad caused my parentsโ€™ deaths. Sure, I donโ€™t hold that against you, but I canโ€™t act like it didnโ€™t happen. My parents would never forgive me.โ€

โ€œAnd the Drago familyโ€ฆ theyโ€™re my enemies too. Just because I havenโ€™t acted yet doesnโ€™t mean Iโ€™ve forgotten. Iโ€ฆ I justโ€ฆโ€ I trailed off, my throat tight, feeling like Iโ€™d already said too much. But that ache in my chest wouldnโ€™t quit.

I added, โ€œLook, Hayden. With everything between us, how could I still love you? So donโ€™t worry, Iโ€™m not here to ruin your life. If I wanted revenge, Iโ€™d find a better way. I wonโ€™t mess with your love or your marriage. I really do wish you happiness. Both of you.โ€

I looked up at the sky. โ€œIf you donโ€™t believe me, Iโ€™ll swear it right here under the moon.โ€

I raised my hand, forcing a smile even as tears slipped down my cheeks. I caught the flicker of pain in Haydenโ€™s eyes.

So, he wasnโ€™t completely unaffected. Did my words get to him, orโ€ฆ was there still something left between us? The thought was ridiculous, of course. He was about to marry someone else. There couldnโ€™t be any feelings left.

โ€œI swear, if I ever interfere with Hayden Hart andโ€”โ€

โ€œEnough!โ€ Hayden cut me off, his voice sharp. He turned and walked away, not looking back.

My hand fell slowly, exhaustion washing over me. I stood there, frozen, until I felt someone drape a warm jacket over my shoulders. This time, I didnโ€™t resist Wayneโ€™s help. Heโ€™d already sent the cab away and silently took it upon himself to bring me home.

News of the Hart and Drago family alliance was everywhere. Hayden and Yara were trending nonstop, with Yaraโ€™s accomplishments plastered across the internet, turning her into some kind of role model. But buried under all those headlines, there was one weird local news storyโ€”a guy had been rushed to the hospital after getting a billiard ball stuck somewhere it definitely didnโ€™t belong.

Curious, I clicked on it. And there he was: Bruno, the guy whoโ€™d harassed me last night.

It didnโ€™t take a genius to guess someone had paid him back for me. But who? Hayden was about to be married, so it couldnโ€™t have been him. Soโ€ฆ Wayne? Wayne had dropped me off last night, silent and serious, even leaving his jacket behind. I arranged to get it dry-cleaned and returned.

Not two seconds later, Lena called, her voice full of fire. โ€œCan you believe Hayden? Heโ€™s really doing this alliance thing. If heโ€™s marrying someone else, then you should be out there meeting new people too!โ€

I cringed, remembering my last disaster of a blind date and quickly shut that idea down. Lena tried to pep-talk me, sticking with me on the line for ages. When we finally hung up, I glanced out the window, stretched, and booked a ticket to Houston.

I wasnโ€™t running away from Haydenโ€™s engagement. I just didnโ€™t want to miss Steveโ€™s last match. But right after booking, my phone buzzed with a message from Yuna on social media. I opened it to find a close-up of a plane ticket. I zoomed in, squinting at the details, then froze. Yuna was also flying to Houstonโ€ฆ on the exact same flight as me.
