Chapter 468

โ€œRea!โ€ Jace reached out and grabbed my arm. I glanced at the bandage on his head, then over at Wayne, whoโ€™d come in with him. โ€œI think somethingโ€™s happened to Hayden.โ€

Wayne frowned, clearly not buying it. โ€œWhat do you mean? How do you know?โ€

I didnโ€™t, not for sure. โ€œI called him. He sounded busy, said heโ€™d call me back, butโ€ฆhe hasnโ€™t. Not once.โ€

โ€œWhy didnโ€™t you call again?โ€ Jace asked, a little sharply.

I hadnโ€™t. I just waited, trusting heโ€™d call like he said.

โ€œIโ€™ll call him.โ€ Jace pulled out his phone, dialing.

It rang forever until finally, โ€œMr. Johnston.โ€ Jace stood close enough that I could hear everything.

โ€œHayden, where are you?โ€ Jace asked, without hesitation.

โ€œOn a plane.โ€

My breath caught. Jace glanced at me. โ€œA plane? Where to?โ€

โ€œBack to Kehlmark.โ€ Those two words crushed me. I reached for the phone. โ€œIs something wrong?โ€

Hayden didnโ€™t answer. My hand shook. โ€œHayden, talk to me! Did something happen? Are you lying about Kehlmark? Where are you?โ€

I couldnโ€™t believe heโ€™d leave without seeing meโ€”unless something big was going on.

โ€œNo, Iโ€™m not lying,โ€ Hayden finally said.

But I wasnโ€™t convinced. My voice cracked as I pushed back, โ€œI donโ€™t believe you. Youโ€™ve lied to me before.โ€

There was a long pause, and I braced for Hayden to come up with some excuse. Instead, he said, โ€œYeah, Iโ€™m a liar. But not this time. If you donโ€™t believe me, Iโ€™ll send you a picture.โ€

The line went dead. A second later, my phone buzzed. Hayden had sent a photo of himself on the plane, along with a shot of his boarding pass.

Staring at it, I had to accept the truth. He really was going back to Kehlmark. And he hadnโ€™t even come to see me.

I mustโ€™ve looked as wrecked as I felt, because Jace and Wayne just stood there, silent.

Finally, Jace broke the tension. โ€œThat asshole! Iโ€™m calling him back.โ€ He reached for his phone.

I grabbed his hand. โ€œDonโ€™t.โ€

โ€œReaโ€ฆโ€ Jaceโ€™s voice was full of concern.

Ignoring him, I typed a message to Hayden: [Is something going on back home?] I hit send. No reply.

Frustrated, I sent another: [If somethingโ€™s happened, Iโ€™ll understand. But if you left without a good reason, Iโ€™ll be really hurt and angry.] Still nothing. But I saw the messages had been read. He was ignoring me.

What was happening? Panicked, I typed one last message: [Come back. I need you to see me before you go. If you donโ€™t, weโ€™re done. Weโ€™ll break up.]

โ€œRea,โ€ Jace and Wayne said at the same time, shocked by what Iโ€™d just sent. But I kept my eyes locked on the screen. A notification appeared: [Hayden is typingโ€ฆ]

I held my breath, waiting. Then one word popped up: [Okay,]

Just that one word, and it felt like a knife to my chest.
